As a tailor I have to disagree with his claim that you can't achieve the same effect with a standard sewing machine. You absolutely can, dexterity, thread matching and everything. It takes longer but in no way is it impossible.

It's also not at all impossible with a needle and thread, I just don't put that much time into darning jeans and I don't tend to use modern thread or modern needles most of the time so the repairs tend to be rather obvious. If you want faster repairs that might be very visible, yarn works well enough if you have needles that can accommodate it.

I recommend Science and Kindness in the Twin Cities for darning. It’s not inexpensive, but it’s far more durable than other options I’ve tried.
