I did Keto + IF for 15 months and shed off a whopping 90 pounds which was 35% of my initial weight. During that time I AlWAYS without exception, took a day and half off every week to eat WHATEVER I wanted. When I say whatever I mean it, and for whatever reason I was still able to shed off all of that weight keeping Keto and IF the rest of the week hard core. Maybe someone should research this.

I am finding the minute I socialize with non keto people, it is so hard to not cheat! Like the other day I went with a friend out to farm country and the first thing she focused on was ice cream from a dairy and it had to be, and I figured it would be really good, so I had ice cream. I can dial it back, but this is an issue that is really hard to deal with because of the pressure to join in. I used to be able to eat anything, until I hit menopause. Then I realized I couldn't. The first time I did keto I had instant results. I fell weirdly off the wagon because of a part time job. Not its a battle to lose 15 lbs!!!

I've been in ketosis 24/7 for 3 months now. In this period my LDL cholesterol has risen to 5.0mmol and my blood pressure is 150/76. Pre-keto my cholesterol and keto were not elevated. This research paper, *Elevated LDL Cholesterol with a Carbohydrate-Restricted Diet: Evidence for a “Lean Mass Hyper-Responder” Phenotype* , provides valuable insight regarding people who are metabolically healthy and have low BMI, experiencing significantly elevated LDL whilst eating low carb diets. Nevertheless, in an effort to lower my LDL and blood pressure, *metabolic switching (flexibility)* is likely the solution. Fast 20-22hrs / day and thereby generate ketones for a portion of the day, and during the eating window increase healthy whole-food carbs to ~ 50-70.

Cheat days are an incredible waste of time and energy. Today, at 70, I weigh the exact amount I weighed in the 11th grade in 1968. 135# at 5'6". Lean, fit, and healthy. In between I've weighed as much as 174, after a terrible 12 year period of high carb, low fat, sorta vegan, diet. I started back on keto last September and will never change again (except for end of life care, when my diet will, of course, be out of my control. : ) .

Yeah, degenerative disc disease seems to have led to this for me, and a lot of fasting and keto have helped. Unfortunately, had a bad turn in my DDD recently and I'm working hard to bring the inflammation down again. Fortunately, I dropped 100 pounds and I'm very active but the neck does what it wants. It seems to have driven my blood pressure up, too, and medicating that may be helping the inflammation. No diabetic symptoms for over a year, thank God, but do have to treat the blood pressure. :(

permanent deep ketosis is not natural. The best approach I heard off is in the book the switch by James Clement. 1. ketosis is the preferred metabolic state for the biggest part of the year, around 70 to 80 % of the year 2. Important are up to date known aging switches MTor on or off over IGF1, AMPK over Insulin levels and Sirtuin over reservatrol, quercetin heat and cold, exercise... 3. Protein and Carb cycling means for example once a week some more protein and saisonal more carbs for example in summer when local fruits are ready. The goal is the balance to switch off MTor most of the time, activate AMPK most off the time and set stress signals to activate Sirtuin proteins. If you do all the time Intermitted fasting, deep keto and adäquate protein the authopagy and mithophagy activity is all the time high. But here the key, we need times where certain tissues can recreate new cells like heart cells and so you want to activate from time to time MTor or even to deactivate AMPK to build little fat instead of burning. It's a simulation of the natural eating habits our ancestors with optimal ratios and up to date knowledge based on habits of the centenetials. So this does not mean to eat very high carb in the summer but to eat apples etc., more like moderate carbs from complex sources or from nutrient dense fruits. In my opinion this is the best up to date approach to minimize aging, recreation of tissue, cleaning up old proteins, maintaining muscle mass and keep the body in metabolic flexible state. Someone who is doing all the time ketosis lives not optimal in my point of view. So rather stay 3 to 4 months on proper ketosis to live one month with moderate carbs for example 100 to 150 gr. carbs a day. If you do IF you will have light ketosis even with more carbs in certain times for example the last hours of a daily 18 hour fast... People with insulin resistance should do keto for minimum 4 months before do carb cycling a month.

for me, striving for high metabolic flexibility is the best way to go. to increase metabolic flexibility is not about high carbs. The best way to do it carb load soon after a long endurance workout. muscle glycogen is built most effectively when muscle glycogen is quickly and deeply depleted. best to carb load with unrefined carbs like organic hulled millet or organic oatmeal (for me it’s about 50-80g of carbs so the total carbs for the day is 80-120g). The best part of metabolic flexibility is the body has the ability to spare muscle glycogen and burn more fat while doing a long endurance workout. also, being metabolic flexible also means the body is highly efficient at building muscle glycogen because a build up of machinery of building muscle glycogen. much like burning fat, the process of building muscle glycogen can be lost if there the person does not do it for prolonged period of time. use it or lose. NOTE: muscle glycogen is a more effective fuel the blood glucose because it’s broken down to glucose-6-phosphate so there are no bottlenecks. WHY metabolic flexibility? 1) much higher physical performance. 2) muscle glycogen sparing due much to higher fat utilization. 3) it’s easier to get leaner and get more ripped.

So if Keto is the way to go it is concerning to see Paul Saladino's video on continuous glucose monitoring, where the dietician looked at the blood glucose of someone who had been on keto for years and they showed the same insulin resistance as a pre diabetic! This is not the same temporary insulin resistance that will be experienced with someone on keto who then eats carbs. The dietician said it was common to see this with long term Keto.

I can cheat quite a bit and stay in ketosis, however after a few days of that you get your bad hunger back which causes you to munch out and cheat more, eventually going out of ketosis. Does ketosis or the amount of it matter that much if you are like 50/50 eating say 50 grams a carbs a day maybe more, or just eating some carbs twice a week. Obviously it matter if you want to lose weight or beat some disease or build you body back up, but if you are in good balance, eat good food and do not gain weight then you are likely living healthy whether in ketosis or not or how much you are.

How does a person know if they really have metabolic flexibility? I am a 49 year old female who has mostly been able to eat “whatever sounds good” most of my life without much weight change. I definitely wouldn’t say I am an over eater, but do eat my share of carbs, sugar etc. I’m fairly active at 5’3/117 lbs. I’ve adopted IF at the beginning of 2020 doing 16/8 five days a week. I have done this to prepare for metabolic changes that may be coming soon due to menopause. Is this a good course to take or could I be “metabolically flexible”? I would just hate to be one of those people who was thin all their lives and then BOOM, menopause hits and I gain weight. Any recommendations?
