This is a real demonstration of putting a pulley 50 feet up in a tree while keeping your feet on the ground. I use this technique to put pulleys in trees to hold up wire antennas.

A note to anyone planning to make one of these... Make sure the lower loop that is used to retrieve the assembly is lower than the pulley once it is in place on the branch! Don't ask me how I know...

Oh no! Did you manage to get it down to fix it? I bet you could make a longer hook where only the bottom of it is affixed to the rope so it can extend past the pulley.

@@MostlyBuilds I did get it down. I ended up using small crow bar attached to the end of three 10' chain link fence top rails.

Pretty cool. How do you get it in the tree to start with? I see you already have the rope over a branch, what was your method of accomplishing it?

I used a throw weight that I bought on amazon: amzn.to/3SNU8J1 I have another video where I demonstrate that in addition to the method you see in this video, but I do it at ground level so you can see everything up close. I show the weight in that video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5yuoYNopbmjj9U Sometimes it takes me quite a few tries to throw the weight right where I want it. I've heard good thinks about this slingshot that you can use with a throw weight, but it's a bit expensive: amzn.to/3JTVyQY I also have a video on how to adjust a line in a tree instead of trying to rethrow again: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4msdXlve6qFnKM I recommend using a relatively light line attached to the throw weight if possible. There are good videos of arborists throwing lines up into trees.

Is this a ham radio antenna? I looked up this video to try to find a way that I could string up a dog run between two trees, possibly by using some of my dad's antenna wire, but I didn't think I was going to end up watching a radio video. My dad was a big time ham radio guy. He made a similar video on how to build a cheap die pole antenna. It's on his channel, under Marty Drift. I also have some videos of him talking on his radios on my channel. He unfortunately passed away in 2017.

Hi Melissa. Yup I used this pulley hanging method to put up a dipole antenna. It could definitely be used for other things though. Sorry to hear about your dad. Good luck with the dog run project.

I’m confused, what is the pulley loop made of? Looks like plastic flexible pipe with rope inside ? Can you show it slowly so I can see everything?

Sorry about that. You can see the pulley assembly a bit better in the first video of the series: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5yuoYNopbmjj9U The description on that video has links to the tubing and the rope. I’m planning to film a video on how to make one. It’s on my TODO list, but not scheduled yet. I use a single length of 3/16 rope and route it through the tubing to make the pulley assembly. I use 3 sections of tubing. The long length of tubing that ends with the pulley is a larger diameter tube compared to the other two that are used. This is because the rope is doubled up inside of it, forming a loop at the end where the pulley attaches. Consider subscribing if you are interested to see the pulley assembly video when I get around to filming it.

Sorry if this is a duplicate, but I can't find my post from yesterday where I asked if there was a video showing how to build the pulley assembly itself?

We all know that you bought the weight from Amazon. But the question is how did you get that weight over the tree in the first place!
@MostlyBuilds
@MostlyBuilds Жыл бұрын
Hey Russ, I held the rope like 1-2 feet above the weight and rocked it back and forth a few times to build some momentum before releasing it (under hand throw style). It helps to wear well fitting work gloves. I’ve heard good things about this sling shot device, but it’s kinda pricy: amzn.to/3ooNoHE I don’t need to do this very often so I just opt for throwing like 20 times by hand to get it to the right spot.

Where did you get the pulley assembly did you make it and run rope through the plastic? 😅
@MostlyBuilds
@MostlyBuilds Жыл бұрын
Yep I made it. A few people have asked for a video for making it. It’s on my TODO list 😀 I’ll describe the process: I used a single length of rope to avoid creating points of failure by tying multiple pieces together. Starting from where the pulley is, I used the larger vinyl tube to put a loop of the rope through. You need to size this length of tube to wrap around your tree branch and have some hanging down. Basically I pulled the rope through this tube, slid on the pulley, and ran the rope back through the tube. Resulting in a rope that goes through the tube, is threaded through the pulley eye, and goes back down the tube. Now at the other end of the tube (far side away from the pulley), I pulled the rope through a narrower diameter piece of vinyl tube to make the small loop that forms the slip knot loop. I don’t double back the rope through the tube on this one. I just tie it to the main part of the rope that came out of the larger tube opposite the pulley. Then from that tie point, between the larger vinyl tube and the slip knot loop, I drop a few feet of rope for the retrieval loop. At the end of that drop I just use another length of the smaller diameter vinyl tube to run the rope through and tie it to where it entered that tube. Forming the larger retrieval loop. I have another video demonstrating the pulley assembly install procedure in a mock up situation: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5yuoYNopbmjj9U I left links in the description for materials to build the assembly. Hope that is helpful. When I get around to filming making one I’ll try to remember to update you on this thread. If you’re interested, please consider subscribing 😀

@@MostlyBuilds facts the description legit so are them knots tho I’ll buy one if that’s a option. Right now I have ropes and single wheel pulleys in trying to make something work I got the throw weight too lol

Ok, so if you are using this to run antenna wire between two different trees (in my case a long efhw wire), would you need two pulleys on each apparatus? From what I can tell, it looks like you would need one pulley to attach and secure the system to the base of the tree, and another pulley or insulator for the wire. Am I thinking about this the right way? I’d like to try this by running the wire from the house up to tree one, then over to tree two. It’s something like an inverted L but I don’t see how you could do it with just one pulley. Anybody can help me out here??

I’m running a center fed dipole, so I’m using 3 trees, each with a pulley. I have a single rope going through each pulley where one end is connected to the antenna and the other is connected to a counter weight. The two outer trees support the ends of the dipole (ropes connected to the insulators at the end of the antenna wire). Then the middle tree connects to the center part of the dipole where there is ladder line hanging down vertically (connected to my coax close to the ground). With this setup, each connection point to the antenna is made with a rope going through a pulley with a counter weight at the end. This holds the antenna taut but allows for movement when the trees sway in the wind. Hope this description helps.

@@MostlyBuilds ok thanks for the reply. I sorta get what you’re saying but it’s difficult to completely understand it without a visual. I’ve seen the concept of a friction saver, similar to this. I’ve just got to wrap my head around how I’m going to run my own wires. Cool concept and thanks for sharing.

@@wjjohns04able here is how I’d probably try to hang an end fed antenna. Use this design at your own risk. I’m not an expert 😀 postimg.cc/BXYkW9KY
