I'm a k9 handler in the UK and this was taught to me on day 1 of training. Often referred to as safe leash over here. Also it gives me shudders when I see people walking with a leash wrapped around their hands after seeing numerous photographs of injuries caused by big dogs suddenly lunging or trying to bolt.

I learned this method from a police dog handler in the’80’s. 😊

I've been using this method for the past year with a leash with a handle and it works great. It took a few days to get used to but once you do it's just the natural way to hold it now.

Love this! I am always telling clients stop wrapping your leash! One woman got her finger dislocated by doing the wrap.

I've always wondered how it was you had a secure leash hold without a handle on the leash end. And I even noticed you adjusting your grip on the leash in a manner I didn't recognize. Now that you spelled it out, the light bulb in my head turned on. BTW, I'm just a working line GSD owner - not a professional or even an amateur in a way, shape, or form. Just a guy that enjoys learning from watching Haz's videos.

Please, make video tips to walk two dogs together. I have adult dog and puppy. When walked alone, adult walks almost perfect on loose leash, puppy mostly pulls. Together they start to pull both.

The wrapped around the hand that many people do, I have seen many a broken finger or wrist when I worked in the ER. Also saw some smaller women get dragged when they could not hold the dog.

As a woman (though admittedly not a smaller one, lol), it can be useful to be in a side on boxing stance and wrap the lead under your bottom. Even with a big dog and a small woman, you can brace yourself using your legs and bodyweight. It's particularly useful when with a decoy, as people tend to use two hands out in front, with arms partially bent and bicep curled, then when the dog lunges hard, their arms straighten and the dog comes forward fast to the decoy when they may not be prepared/expecting it.

The loop at the end of the leash slides to my wrist. I don't hold the leash in my grip. The mainstay is my wrist. Only when I have to be ready is when I hold the leash. This grip here is too tough on the thumb.

can you create some videos about max and what is his current daily routine ?
@RogueAPBT2 жыл бұрын
Back in the stone age, when I learned to train dogs, the "handle" that you cut off was called a "thumb loop". I'm somewhat entertained that you know what a thumb loop grip is, yet cut the loops off your leashes. Kids these days! ;)

HA!!! I see people do that with their horses! I know people that have actually lost a few fingers! I ride with my 3.5 year old GSD at my side and I have had to "dally" my leash around my saddle horn, but never my hand!

This is how the professional dog handlers you see at dog shows hold their leashes!!! And they are running around the ring with sometimes 1/4 to 1/2 inch wide leashes with skinny little choke chains and 100-150+ pound guarding and working dogs!!! Loosing their grip in a ring full of intact males could be a disaster
