I've heard a couple polyglots advising to listen to language you're learning regularly even if you hardly understand anything. Makes you accustomed to the language, remembering gets easier this way too. I was very surprised when after I was learning Japanese for a while, I realized that I remembered a song's lyrics even though I didn't know the meaning behind the words, and that I was able to translate them in my memory 😮

I hear picking up a languages phonemes are very important in learning a new language and getting accustomed to how the language sounds can aid the learning process. It seems to be good advice as it only took 148 episodes to be able to sing along to the Hunter X Hunter theme song "Departure!" by Masatoshi Ono. The fact that I watched the whole video with no subtitles and could understand almost everything makes me so proud... I stopped learning Japanese 6 years ago when I started university (veterinary medicine) but it was always one of my biggest passions. I even got a high score in a N4 JLPT test 6 years ago. @@AshRektum you'll notice certain patterns in kanji that'll make it easier (still will be easily the 2nd hardest part about the language tho) and you'll pick up a few hundred rather quick so don't think about it and just practice with repetition. Flashcards can make it easier but, imo it's just better to read a lot. Then again people learn in different ways. gl

Honestly, it depends on the kinds of Anime you watch. If you only ever watch battle shounen, of course you’re mostly gonna learn series-specific or outlandish/outdated words no is gonna use irl. But if you for example watch a lot of Slice of Life Anime, you will eventually learn a lot of “every day” words you can use in normal conversations. While you will most likely never gain true proficiency by just watching Anime, you will be able to better understand, recognize or remember what people are saying.

I dunno.. i'm sure i will get great use out of saying BATTLE! and DEATH AND DESTRUCTION randomly, in japanese.. in caps because they're shouted in the anime, so i will assume that is how it's done :p I do wonder how well i'd pick up on the whole language if i watched Subbed anime way sooner in life. I'm pretty much a self taught english speaker just from movies/shows and some chat later on... it was so easy when you're young.

Totally agree. I'm watching anime called Monster (highly recommend) at the moment, and it's very mature and close to reality, so most of the vocabulary used there definitely can be used in real life. But when I tried to watch apperantly easy Shirokuma cafe, which is recommended to beginners, it wasn't very useful and was actually harder to understand bc the speech was quite fast and the anime itself too absurd. It's a right thing to keep attention of the kids, but not a good choice for language learning.

I recommend anyone interested in anime to try out the Anki deck "Japanese course based on Tae Kim's grammar guide & anime". It requires no knowledge and teaches by using audio from anime and drama. You'll learn grammar and vocabulary and you can change the text according to your skill: romaji -> hiragana > kanji. I have a lot of fun so far using this deck. It's nice to have the new words directly in new sentences, so you know how to use them and don't have to memorize some weird translations. And don't worry, the polite form is also taught. Everybody says that anime only teaches the impolite form, even so I get a lot of examples in Teineigo.

I like how you try to speak as slowly as possible and put Kanji letters along with each language subtitle. It's useful for me. Also, 4:00 / 4:07 'rule' in Thai is กฎ , and 'to push' in Thai is กด . They both share the same pronunciation - /goad/ some kind like that? Well, don't mind me. It doesn't have a big matter because I can understand your subtitle anyway.

I'm currently bilingual and picked up English early on in my life because my mom exposed me to it at a very young age. School helped, but I pretty much picked it up on my own. My first language is French, but from Canada. Not France. So it sounds very different haha When I watch Japanese anime or TV, I use subtitles to better understand what they're saying. It's not teaching me grammar, but it helps. And sometimes I repeat what i'm hearing. Still I have a long way to go before I become fluent in Japanese lol

Some people actually watch anime without subtitles so they can learn to listen and understand from context as well and pick up some words here and there, i am doing it here and there and i must say it's pretty rewarding when i find words i know or learn words from it and understand things that happen from context and not relying on subtitles :p So i recommend you give that a go when you're comfortable or at least trying, also manga helps if you are able to read hiragana and katakana (preferrably manga that has furiagana tho for kanji)

i never thought about learning jp, but when i started actively playing pjsekai, i realized that i can understand some words, and, for example when you said example sentence about teacher and classmate, i actually understood that this is something about teacher (sensei) and classmate, but no other words, bc i never learned it. i can understand some simple single words, like "please" "of course" "mother/father" "sister" and etc, and can read some romaji words, but thats not even the begginer level. i just thought it can be related to the topic of the video

I've been thinking about ways to improve my understanding of Japanese, and I think I just need to learn more vocabulary. I remember when I was little we'd have weekly tests with new words to learn for english, and we'd play games and use these words in sentences to better understand them. Maybe you could do something like that for the school? Or at least the free portion of it. Introduce new vocab and find games to play to teach the meaning of those words.

Watching TV in the language you want to learn, is an excellent and strongly recommended *_PART_* of learning a language. You wont get far, with that alone, but it is extremely helpful, as a supplement to other learning resources. As for grammar, watching TV does, though slowly and unnoticeably, help with that: After a while, you get some subconscious sense, of some of the grammar. (you'll want to also get theoretical knowledge, of the grammar, however, and studying grammar, will also help with picking up on grammar from TV-watching) Pure audio might help you get a sense of the general sound, but it's much harder to understand what is happening, limiting how helpful it is. With TV, you are better able to get a sense of what is happening, and thus connect the sounds with meaning. So it is probably also best, when beginning to read, to start with comics. (so manga, in the case of Japanese. With full furigana, to start with)

Currently I'm listening to alot of Japanese for the simple reason that I want to be able to hear and comprehend the sounds, I don't really want to dive into words without knowing how to listen for them. My current plan is to listen to Japanese until I can understand all the noises going on, then connect the noises to words, then the words to grammar, and then apply my knowledge to speaking. I don't know that it will work, and my plan will most likely adapt as I try it and see what works and doesn't, but that's my generally idea the moment. Any suggestions would be helpful, thank you :)

Well, I should say I really notice so much things from the anime so that I can understand some sentences like the one you said before, I actually didn't see grammar rules until I get parts of them from the anime, how to conjugate verbs in the past, in the present, how to use some forms, maybe because I have a good attention when it comes to the languages, although I'd like to take courses in Japanese and English if I could, because I know I'll learn it in 6 months or maybe less (well writing and reading in Japanese...hehe.. I am not sure about them, maybe more than a year)

After watching anime so long, often times, if the subtitle cut out, or I have to walk away for a second. I can still get the gist of what they said but don't understand exactly, basically combining context with what words I do understand, definitely not fluent in Japanese from anime though so this is spot on lol I'd recommend, personally, people watch more slice-of-life anime like Miss-Kobayashi's Dragon Maid. As the sentences are more complex and there's a lot more talking, in that anime in particular i had a friend who can't watch it with subtitle because they speak too fast but i have no problem myself as if i miss a sentence i just fill in the gaps. When learning a new language it's important to be able to fill in gaps using Context as you'll have to do that in real life as well. I couldn't understand the whole sentence "Hey, do you like that girl over there?" but i could understand "Onoko, Suki, Daiyo" And i know from that they're asking me. So i could fill it in with context lol

私、アニメとゲームで日本語を覚えたよwwちょっぴり日本の方とも知り合ってたまにチャットで話したりするけどやっぱりアニメとゲームの方が結構勉強になってるかも…フレーズは聞けば聞くほど組み合わせがわかるようになるし、単語は漢字を見たほうが覚えやすいのでゲームでよく見れる！まぁ今の私の日本語は別に最強級ってわけでもないけど、時間がたてばたつほどに上手になってると思うし…アニメとゲームと漫画は楽しい学び方だけど他の方法で比べたら時間かかるからね

I love how Japanese sounds and how it's used (if that makes any sense), but I don't really have an output for it. None of my friends are learning the language and they don't have any classes for it near me. Most of the time, I find myself just talking to myself about random things. Sometimes I'll answer my friends with, "un, yeah," or "uun, no". It's not the best, but it's better than nothing I guess haha. Lucky for me, you're videos are very helpful! So thank you for helping me on my journey to learn Japanese!

i have understood everysingle word i can honestly say 100% , just by watching anime , also you asked how can you understand sentences , its easy for intelligent people , when you know 1 word , you eliminate that word from that sentence and when you hear a 2 word sentence next time , you know that the other word means the other one on the subtitles , it continues and continues and then 3 word 4 word and a full complete sentence can be understood , but i watched 8 episodes everyday for years thats a lot of time

I've been watching anime for like 5 years now and I gotta say I can get a grasp of what a person is trying to say in a sentence by just hearing the language but when it comes to phrases and words I knoww exactly what they mean 😭 but when it comes to the actual writing of stuff oh yeah I cannot

usually i watch anime to recall the grammar i learned. honestly my major problem is speaking. i stop my japanese class coz it did't help me to speak in japanese. just helping me more on paper. i am good in English coz i used to love watching football, and i argued a lot in internet about football lol. Also i love reading. This is the most obstacle one. I cannot read kanji. i really suck in kanji. I've tried but the wall just too high. at the end, im just good in listening hahahah

聞いて話すことが余裕なら、十分だと思います。 しかしアニメは使わない単語がすごく多いので気をつけてください。 例えば、一人称を 某や拙者、オラ、わらわ など使うとドン引きされますのでご注意を！

어릴때 부터 애니를 봐왔기도 해서 애니로 일본어를 배웠다고 얘기하는데 잘 생각해 보면 그냥 애니를 봐온것 뿐 아니라 일본 노래나 재미있는 대사 같은걸 따라하고 그 번역본과 발음, 원문 등을 비교하고 읽으면서 그때부터 확 트인것 같다. 특히 어느정도 청해가 되고 부터는 애니 자막과 들리는 말을 비교하면서 '나라면 이렇게 번역 했겠다.' 혹은 '내 생각엔 이렇게 번역하는 게 맞는것 같은데?' '아니 여기는 이런 맥락이라 이렇게 번역했구나!' 등 생각하며 보는데 이게 문법이나 작문 쪽으로는 도움이 되지 않았을까 생각된다. 물론 한자는 아직 못 읽지만..ㅋㅋ

Hello, my name is Joseph. I understand at least half of what you say in Japanese. And I agree about the matter of finding the right words according to the series, and that not every series that is watched today is suitable for the language spoken today. , as far as I'm concerned, I'm from Israel, at first I watched series dubbed into Hebrew...(the mother tongue in my home country) and I discovered the language by chance due to a series that was broadcast in the original language called...nuku nuku dash when I turned 13. Today I'm 30 years old and can put together sentences in the language Japanese from memory only, which is a bit difficult since every moment between sentences I have to remember how to pronounce words and a correct sentence that comes in pursuit after another sentence. But I think I'm doing pretty well and of course I would like to speak the language more, but the amount of people who speak the language in the area where I live is low and there aren't many convenient practice options. What I did manage to learn different things from the language... colors/animals/numbers 1>>1000/ form of pronunciation for immigrants, for business owners, other professions... and everything is animated which proves the point that it will take years to learn from watching series only, as you said in a clip. And I agree with you.

Привет! на счет аниме - хорошая идея, когда я задумывался над тем как улучшить эффективность обучение/понимание японского то, приходил к мыслям о просмотре аниме в оригинале с субтитрами - это и вправду помогает мне запомнить какие-то отдельные фразы или маленькие, простые предложения. У меня есть еще один нюанс связанные с таким подходом: в некоторое аниме хочется погрузиться по полной из-за их крутизны, а с субтитрами я не смогу сосредоточиться в полной мере на картинке и действиях но, приводит к мысли, что такие аниме бы мне дали больше знаний и удовольствия от языка чем какое-то скучное для меня аниме. 動画をありがとうございます。

I learnt how to speak Japanese just by watching anime. I'm at a level where I can understand you without subtitles and I can tell apart the casual and formal ways of speaking but the problem is that I can't read or write in Japanese.

Yep, same here. After tens of thousands of hours you eventually just pick up enough random stuff you start to see how everything fits together and when to use which things. Duolingo and channels like this helped me feel much more confident with keigo though. That and having imaginary conversations lol. Still working on anything beyond very slow hiragana reading...

nice video. There is other difficulties with learning from anime or from tv with subtitles, firstly you are relying on accurate translation, then given the sentance structure the translated words are not always in the order they are spoken so its hard to identify the word straight off with the sound, to complicate it sometimes the sentance is not all on the screen at the same time so you may hear the verb before it is written on the screen and the noun appears after it was written on the screen, its a bit like scramble brain. an interesting technique used in uk infant schools when i was young was when the word was spoken it changed colour so the 2 correlated. The other common thing was games, learning using games is entertaining. I always felt game apps or something more advanced would work well, with english games like Scrabble and Boggle are popular, Crosswords, word searches and word puzzles also.

저는 처음에 애니보고 아주 조금씩 들려서 일본유튜브 보면서 단어 뜻 찾아보고 문법도 느낌으로 자연스레 익혀가고 있어요 그래서 지금와서 애니나 영화 자막을보면 확실히 어느 부분이 의역됬고 직역됬는지 알 수 있는정도 같아요
