This exercise is one of my favourite ways to practice and develop my improvisation. It's a fantastic way to properly learn vocabulary and be able to apply it to different contexts.
It works best with 3-5 note phrases. It's fun, creative and a very efficient way to practice. Make sure to use the same vocabulary over a variety of different tunes & progressions to get the most out of it.

Incredible as always. When I'll become an intermediate piano player, this will be all thanks to you Especially for the jazz and improvisation side of the thing Thanks a million times 💜 PS : Did someone ever told you that your videos are even that good and chill that I can play your uploaded videos Playlist even in background to chill? I do. You make the ambiance so minimalist, clean and calm, the voice volume is perfect, and the playing is perfect to study etc

What a great lesson! I tried it. It's super fun and really helps in developing a feel for chord changes. It also goes to show what a sick scale the altered scale is. The A7alt is the most fun of them all.

Dear Simon, I’m a subscriber and love your videos. Love your style and feel. I have to say though, I’m completely lost, right from the start, with this video 😞 The reason is, the first chord you say is a Dm7 but is actually an F major 7! It’s stuff like this that leaves me completely confused and cannot get my head around this. If anyone can explain this or recommend other vids for me to watch to understand this, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
@brettantoni
@brettantoni 3 ай бұрын
It's because it's actually a Dm9. He's using the D root in the left and and playing the rest of the extended chord in his right. Also to not further confuse you, all of the 7th chords in the beginning of this video are played as 9th chords not 7ths.

It is usable to be fair since it does actually fit into the Gmaj scale. It's the natural 11 (C) over the G which sounds a bit funky, but does have a particular sound that can be pulled off in the right context. Didn't want to go into that in this video though 😂

dear pianopig i have a question that why dm7 is 4613 , 4613 is Fmaj7? thank you i love your jazz
@suga4all
@suga4all Жыл бұрын
It's a rootless voicing of the Dm7. If you add the root (which he doesn't play), you get a Dm9.

Can you please explain de harmonic function behind this progressions?
@Piano_Pig
@Piano_Pig Жыл бұрын
Easiest way would probably be to think of it as a diatonic progression in D minor, apart from the G major chord, which is a borrowed from the key of D major. Hope that helps! 🙂
