Scott, I am really enjoying this series. We are in the process of buying a house build in 1961, It is block and I know nothing about block. We have had 14 houses and build all of them except for our first one in 1984 and this one in 2022. We will ultimately build our next home as it is a home we designed and build for a client 10 years ago and by farr the best house we have ever built, but for now it will be fun to remodel this house and share the process on our YT channel. Keep up this series as it is inspiring. Ron😎🤙

Around here, box corners are really common. The difference is that we usually put the box corners on before the weatherboards, and the weatherboards butt into the corner trim. Caulking and/or a rain screen gap keeps everything healthy.

Although moving to the South Island has meant no Paerau or Cameron, what it has given birth to is a new fan favourite - Jess's Segues! I'm a fan of the box corners too, the corners of my weatherboards look shagged and could do with exactly this, the question is whether I have the skills *probably not, but i'll give it a go

@pauljenkinson87982 жыл бұрын
In the states we install our horizontal board siding in similar ways although it is rare to see the boards mitered at an out side corner. The most common method is to use corner boards for out side and inside corners. The corner boards should go on prior to installing the siding but can with careful layout be "cut in" latter. This is a tedious fraught process and should be avoided unless an existing condition requires it. After the sidewalls are prepped, and water "proofed", the cb's, are installed. I should add here that corner boards could go on prior to running the exterior wpm. When best practice meant using 15 and 30# felt to "paper a house" a continuous 12" strip of "paper" was applied, folded over the corner before the corner board was installed. The advantage here was you could delay installing the field paper until the actual siding installation began and not worry about the effects that UV would have on the paper/felt. Another advantage was the corner boards could serve as a the story board to install the horizontal coursed consistently spaced around the house. In the past we did this with water levels but lasers have taken over that job. Having used water levels all my career as a "side waller" and commercial lather I know that they have many practical advantages but young carpenters are smitten by technology so it's a moot point discussing it. In any case my water level was an essential part of my tool kit. If there was a project that demanded pinpoint accuracy it's was and in my hands anyway still is the superior choice. But I didn't intend this as a rant about WLs,,, sorry. Since side walling was generally considered a specialty branch in carpentry in the area of the world were I learned the trade, the side waller was required to be skilled in all forms of horizontal/vertical board siding, shingles, T-111, lathe, Aluminum and vynl siding. This often meant that the crews I was running were installing different products on different jobs at the same time. I often kept the portable story boards in my truck but the marked up corner boards served as a permanent reference on site. And if there was an issue it was generally very easy to determine where the mistakes were made and how to get back on layout. Cb's like lath corners can be made to be perfectly plumb or straight with a simple plumb line. Not that we had to do this that often since it didn't gain us much and if the wall was way out it required shimming of the siding to keep the reveals consistent. But this was important in lathing for stucco to "true up" the walls. Once cb's are installed and all other trims are on the fun began and it was a race to the top. Since all that is required is a simple but joint between cb and siding and the layout is already there you crew can fly up the wall. One awesome new tool that I wish we had back in the day are these siding "gecos" www.homedepot.com/p/PacTool-Gecko-Siding-Gauge-for-5-16-in-Siding-1-Set-Per-Package-307202020/202530064. I don't believe they would replace all the other efforts at keeping the courses straight and true but they would eliminate a substantial amount of snapping lines. If I had the choice between this and a laser I would take this tool hands down. After all is said and done, cb's and siding installed is a clean and simple vertical joint between both that could be caulked if the siding were to be painted or left alone when installing a stain grade finish material like White cedar or Cyprus. There is so much more to say about material choices but I'll end it here. In all cases corner boards are superior to any other way of protecting vulnerable exterior and interior corners. Whether set after siding with scribes installed as you demonstrate or as described above they are my choice every time I spec a building of lasting quality.

And one more tip. EVERDURE EPOXY TIMBER SEALER. INTERNATIONAL EPIGLASS is a 2 part timber sealer. it soaks into the timber, and once set it is as hard as 'steel'. Even if applied to rotten timber, it turns the rot to steel. Great to use on cracks in exterior windowsills before you apply filler. Previous experience on a 1910 villa tought me this tip. If you try and clean out the crack, you almost never get out all the old problem timber. use the 2 pack sealer and all the crack is then sealed and rock hard. prime. fill and sand then pain and it will last another 20 years.

This just in; if you find yourself going in circles you need to abandon circle space and head over to square space. So glad to see corners ran over that ugly flashing. Most siding here is always done with different colour trim to make the house look more bold. For your weatherboards could you do what we do with our engineered wood? We leave a 5/16" gap for expansion and contraction and have a flat colour matched aluminium flashing behind it for water run off. The boards don't touch and can't swell, winds get into those open ends and drive the moisture out

Your scribe is beautiful, a classic detail. I have a more barbaric solution I did on my house over 20 years ago. I installed the box trim over the lapped siding, then I ran painters tape over the siding next the the trim, careful to shove it tight into the lapped corners with a putty knife. I filled the gaps with hard expanding foam and let it cure. I cut flush to the trim with my pull saw and a razor knife. The excess all came away when I pulled the tape. I buttered the foam voids with painter’s caulk on a putty knife. Prime and paint, done. Sounds amateur and barbaric, I know, but it has held up and looked good for all this time on the sunniest exposure of my house in harsh Northern California heat and sun.
@jacobrivera-25522 жыл бұрын
Great job Scott. I definitely suggest leaving a small gap between the bottom end grain and the trim so that all the water that runs down does not have the ability to soak up into the end grain of the paint ever fails.

My wife and I just got a ducted heat pump installed in our house. It was originally heated by either a propane heater or electric baseboard heater with both options being expensive. We love it and highly recommend to anyone that does not have the option of natural gas (the other less expensive alternative). Where we are, we're able to get a 7 years 0% interest plus some rebate.
@mozismobile2 жыл бұрын
natural gas is a climate disaster, so it's only cheaper in the "money paid today" sense. Plus it's toxic for people in the house, which matters to some people (it's not the CO2, most of that goes up the chimney, it's the VOCs and direct gas leakage)

Doing a 3-4mm quirk i find looks better over time rather than nailing the box corners flush over time that timber will move and the quirk helps hide that movement
