Hi Shawn - I made a single box for my Victor Rat Trap and baited it with peanut butter. I set the trap on sensitive. The rat was still able to trip the trap over a couple of nights without getting caught. I watched your video with the bait cover so I decided to make a bait cover out of a piece of fine wire mesh. I wired it to the plastic bait paddle and added a bit more peanut butter and set the trap to Firm so the trap wouldn't trip as easily and scare the rat. It worked! I also bought a couple of Victor Rat Traps (original) with the narrow metal bait paddle and made another wire mesh bait cover and wired it to the paddle. It worked, too! Thanks ever so much for your videos. I've learned to think like a rat - lol

@joey I did the same thing for mouse traps. The mice were too small to set off the trigger at the sensitive setting. I'd check the traps and the food was gone. I setup a webcam and recorded what they were doing--they would run over the trigger without setting it off. Instead of putting peanut butter on the trigger, I arranged some cardboard boxes together to form a narrow walkway and placed the mousetrap at the "dead-end". Using peanut butter I glued a small peanut to the floor between the trigger and the boxes. To reach the peanut, the mouse had to stand on the trigger. When the mouse tried to pull the peanut off the floor, it applied extra pressure to the trigger and it would be caught. I was very successful with this method.

A piece of cloth or inner tube under the trap might damp enough to avoid a sympathetic snap setting off another. I also use masking tape to cover the surface of snap traps .Makes for easy cleaning and reusing traps. Before I started doing that I found mice reluctant to enter a trap another mouse died in.

I came up with the same rig before I saw your video. The rats are so huge here (by a food processing plant) that even the Victor doesn't always kill them immediately. But the nails hold them until they die. I also tether the trap with a clamp to a rafter, incase a coon of possum gets involved. I paint the whole rig with used cooking oil. If the rat bleeds, it is easier to remove the blood scent. The oil odor draws rats, and the oil smell covers any human smell that makes rats wary. Thanks for another nice video.

I have found about 10-20% of my rats are too smart to approach a regular trap of any kind, I found that by covering a Rat trap with blown in attic insulation to camouflage the trap, I get them all. I only leave the peanut butter on the trigger showing. That hides the mechanical trap and they walk right onto the covered trap and it gets them. I discovered this with a surveillance video camera I used to watch. I had seen that the smart ones could distinguish any trap type. When I hid it with insulation, it fooled them every time.

I had one comment/suggestion for setting traps if you are new to using these Victor snap traps (and not placing them in a box). At 1:30 in the video when you are setting the trap, set it from the other side (flip it 180 as shown at 1:30). That way if the kill bar trips as you are setting the bar in the trigger, your fingers won’t get hit.
@SpringoStar4 жыл бұрын
Mechanical side note: You may want to add cotton batting/damp cardboard to the sides and bottoms of each area where the traps are. This may reduce the sound and vibrations, so the other traps wouldn't go off with just one. Hope it helps! Great vid as always!

His ten trap system didn't have any issues two nights running, a full house each time. I'm not sure any extra work is required. Maybe the set of four is more sensitive as the whole thing is lighter. In which case it might be better and a lot easier to make a heavier base.

i thought of another trick altogether for these geniuses: Set heavily baited traps inside a small dog "kennel" cage and close the gate ~also that way pets are not able to get it on the nose. I have some subfloor/baseboard chewers, probably roof rats that get in the attic and climbed down between studs to gnaw their ways inside *another thing is one must install wire mesh over all openings around the outside of the house. . . then the new rats can't get in. At our previous house, I got 5 rats with those battery-powered rat zappers. The rats we have now are smarter, couldn't get a single one. Talked to a professional rat guy on the phone and he gave me some good free advice. The old-fashioned Victor snap traps and Slim-Jim as bait. I cut the Slim-Jim into small pieces and microwave them for 15 seconds, just enough to get the grease flowing. Set the traps and got a good size mama rat. A couple of days later, we started picking baby rats off the garage floor. Without mama to feed them, they started venturing out on their own. I just set more traps today and put them in different locations. I gotta build one of those multi-trap boxes. 👍

I had a mice infestation years ago and I used the "carpet bombing" method. Just set up dozens of Victor traps baited with peanut butter and with the tip of the setting arm filed down smooth for a hair trigger. They love the PB and when you set up so many, the mice have less of a chance of avoiding the traps and continue reproducing.
@user-uy1rg8td1v2 жыл бұрын
I would also suggest using clear tape to cover the peanut butter that is on pressure/bait plate. That makes it harder for the mice/rats to lick off the peanut butter without setting off the trap.

Unlike the unit you show, I enclosed the front as well, and drilled 1 1/4" round holes in it so the mice could enter, but the dogs won't be able to steal the bait, or get a trap snapped on them. I've been watching your videos for years, I have seen you make these trap stations in the past. I have knocked some up that I use in my job. I own a small pest control company in the middle of England a lot of farms, but also a lot of rats in sewer systems that lead to entry into homes.

This reminds me of those choker mouse traps that catch multiple rodents all in a row.

Great vid! My place was invaded by two rats -- a grey and a dark brown. Using a similar trap I nailed the gray one but the brown one just threw his nose up at the trap and wouldn't get near it. I guess the bugger didn't like my cheese.

As a person who bought this and caught about 7 mice this trap works magnificent! Definitely recommended for mice and rats
