He also caught on video a rat stealing mice from a live catch trap for food, explaining why the two issues go hand in hand- rats eat mice. It was pretty unprecedented, wasn't believed to be done in the wild. You don't usually see it, as normally they seem to coexist.

@joey I did the same thing for mouse traps. The mice were too small to set off the trigger at the sensitive setting. I'd check the traps and the food was gone. I setup a webcam and recorded what they were doing--they would run over the trigger without setting it off. Instead of putting peanut butter on the trigger, I arranged some cardboard boxes together to form a narrow walkway and placed the mousetrap at the "dead-end". Using peanut butter I glued a small peanut to the floor between the trigger and the boxes. To reach the peanut, the mouse had to stand on the trigger. When the mouse tried to pull the peanut off the floor, it applied extra pressure to the trigger and it would be caught. I was very successful with this method.

Hi Shawn - I made a single box for my Victor Rat Trap and baited it with peanut butter. I set the trap on sensitive. The rat was still able to trip the trap over a couple of nights without getting caught. I watched your video with the bait cover so I decided to make a bait cover out of a piece of fine wire mesh. I wired it to the plastic bait paddle and added a bit more peanut butter and set the trap to Firm so the trap wouldn't trip as easily and scare the rat. It worked! I also bought a couple of Victor Rat Traps (original) with the narrow metal bait paddle and made another wire mesh bait cover and wired it to the paddle. It worked, too! Thanks ever so much for your videos. I've learned to think like a rat - lol

Nice! I have a similar system. Mine has a front with an 1 1/2" hole in front of each trap bay. That stops the leg catches from being able to drag the trap off and die in a hidden spot. It also helps keep the faster rats from jumping out of the way. Nice work!

I had one comment/suggestion for setting traps if you are new to using these Victor snap traps (and not placing them in a box). At 1:30 in the video when you are setting the trap, set it from the other side (flip it 180 as shown at 1:30). That way if the kill bar trips as you are setting the bar in the trigger, your fingers won’t get hit.
@SpringoStar
@SpringoStar 3 жыл бұрын
Mechanical side note: You may want to add cotton batting/damp cardboard to the sides and bottoms of each area where the traps are. This may reduce the sound and vibrations, so the other traps wouldn't go off with just one. Hope it helps! Great vid as always!

His ten trap system didn't have any issues two nights running, a full house each time. I'm not sure any extra work is required. Maybe the set of four is more sensitive as the whole thing is lighter. In which case it might be better and a lot easier to make a heavier base.

Hi, Shawn. Thanks for this video! This really helped us. We built a device like this and allowed the rats to get used to taking the bait with the traps unset. We got about 14. I know there are more around, but they wised up. Do you have any experience or advice on whether going back to a period of not setting the traps might work? Or would you think that specific setup was shot for the surviving rats?

I came up with the same rig before I saw your video. The rats are so huge here (by a food processing plant) that even the Victor doesn't always kill them immediately. But the nails hold them until they die. I also tether the trap with a clamp to a rafter, incase a coon of possum gets involved. I paint the whole rig with used cooking oil. If the rat bleeds, it is easier to remove the blood scent. The oil odor draws rats, and the oil smell covers any human smell that makes rats wary. Thanks for another nice video.

i thought of another trick altogether for these geniuses: Set heavily baited traps inside a small dog "kennel" cage and close the gate ~also that way pets are not able to get it on the nose. I have some subfloor/baseboard chewers, probably roof rats that get in the attic and climbed down between studs to gnaw their ways inside *another thing is one must install wire mesh over all openings around the outside of the house. . . then the new rats can't get in. Great video again, Mr. Woods.

Is there any chance you would show us how to make one of these 4 compartment boxes. My woodwork skills are zero. Brilliant video. Thanks.

Thanks for this one Shawn! I've watched over a hundred over your videos for sure, and just now have finally had a reason to duplicate your design. I have two nosy dogs and wanted a simple way to safely trap a small mouse running around in my garage. I built a little unit like this one, but with three mouse traps instead. Unlike the unit you show, I enclosed the front as well, and drilled 1 1/4" round holes in it so the mice could enter, but the dogs won't be able to steal the bait, or get a trap snapped on them. I'm sure it'll work like a champ.

This is great! Can't wait to try it. My video surveillance shows me that I've got Super Rats that escape from a tripped trap (large Victor traps). It stuns them for a few seconds but then they flop around until they get away. This should do the trick.

Hi Shawn, I work in wildlife control and a coworker Adam pointed me in your direction. We are hesitant to set snaps outside due to potential nontarget animals getting injured (see skunks/raccoons). Is your barn accessible to raccoons & skunks? What's your experience been? We consider weasel boxes or setting in EVO exterior stations sometimes but what's your take? Your vids are top notch and thanks for doing what you do!
