Mix 1 part flour or cornmeal with 1 part fresh baking soda, set pans with generous portions of this out around the farm where it will stay dry and where rodents have been seen. Safe for pets and other animals, lethal for rats and mice since they cannot burp or fart - the baking soda is activated by their stomach acid, it bubbles up and bursts the rodents (and roaches) guts and they go off and die.

For big traps and little ones, you need one thing. Tootsie Rolls. Cut a Tootsie Roll in half for each trap. Make sure you mash it on the top and bottom of the food part. I did this and it got a big rat within an hour. It also got it's offspring the next day.

A very "modern" way of eliminating problems! We use to go sit in the feed barn at night with our 22's. Each rat we got Grandma gave us a quarter. Taught us good shooting skills, gun safety and we earned a little bit to boot! Good video Kevin...hope you get the varmint....

pmessinger Especially if you live in California, where they now charge you $300 PER YEAR just to do a background check on you, going back TWENTY YEARS! We have to pay them to investigate us! That's just to buy a box of ammo! If you ever got in a fight in high school, you fail, and they put you on a federal gun pick up list, and come & take your weapons! So, yea..ammo is quite costly these days..

A good pellet gun is better for that, of you have one. Won't damage equipment, or walls etc, costs even less per shot, and doesn't make as much noise. But hey, use what you got, and I bet you all became pretty good shots!

Kevin we have an accidental rat trap in my son's horse barn. I filled an empty red supplement tub with water. It is in a darker place, but not closed up. I don't know what the count is now, but a couple of weeks ago he had caught a lot of rats. He uses a rake to remove the daily catch, then after a week or so he dumps the water and refills it to within four inches of the top! It has proven to be the best and cheapest rat trap ever.

Yes! They travel in pairs.. also rats are good feed for trees on the property. So don't waste the compost, but feed it to fruit trees or a tree you want to produce more trimmings for your square foot stove. Recycle is good.

You can improve that trigger system with one of those plastic political signs you see stick into the ground every where. Cut a section of the sign into a square that will fit inside the jaws of your set conibear. Bend the trigger wires 90 degrees so they’re horizontal to the floor of the trap. They’ll go on the bottom. Slip the sign onto the wires and insert the trap into your box. Make sure it will drop far enough to set off the trap. The rats cannot beat this modified trigger.

I found the snap traps work best if you take a big seed like I use roasted pumpkin seeds in the shell and I use a needle and thread to sew them right tight to the trigger plate. I then put peanutbutter on the seed. Once I started doing that I've caught rats out in the chicken shed and with the small mouse traps in the house. They cant resist pulling on that pumpkin seed and snap!

Last year we had an issue with a darn field rat. He would eat the bait on the trap, and never get caught. When we put poison in a rat hotel the darn rat took the hotel. He also took the rat poison and ate that. He destroyed several electric tools. Made a nest, and stole tools to line his nest. A fellow vlogger friend suggested I take equal amounts of sugar, baking soda, and flour mix them together. Take a flat container of some sort and lay aout a little mound of the sugar, baking soda, and flour mixture on the container. Take just a little teaspoon of sugar and sprinkle it on top of the mixture to help entice the rat. The rat will eat this mixture, and die because when he drinks water after eating the mixture it blows up their bellies. This concoction worked. We use it anytime there's a field rat around our out buildings.

Or a couple of fleas. I hear that in veterinary medicine a lot. “I think my kitty has a couple of fleas. I don’t know how he’s getting them, he doesn’t go outside and we spray the yard”. Ummm maybe from the rodents in your attic or walls. I don’t care how new or clean your house is: if you live there -or even if you don’t, there’s pests such as insects or rodents. I don’t know how many times realtors or owners of vacant properties have called us for advice bc they can’t even walk into a vacant condo or show a house without being attacked by the dormant fleas that can wait for months for a meal. They have claimed the previous tenants must have had dogs they’d snuck in. Or squatters . They’ve bombed the houses, hired professionals, ripped up carpet and put new in etc. They won’t accept the fact that rodents are bringing them in . They aren’t as bad if you have pets bc they prefer the higher body temp. The best line of defense is to keep a pet around that is on an effective flea control. But banning pets or filing false frivolous claims against prior tenants , or doing 5000 dollars of remodel and eventually selling at a loss is the preferred method to accepting rodents . Just buy some rodent traps and keep all pets , indoor or out on flea control.. bc the rodents aren’t going anywhere.. most people never see them so they don’t believe they are there . But for every one rat you see there’s 50 you don’t .. I think that needs to be 150 to be more accurate.. and it you don’t think rodents or fleas are that big of a deal- google Bubonic plague..,

My neighbors across the road have cats. I have watched them hunt around our place in our security videos. They (as well as other cats I have seen in the cameras) do a great job keeping us rat free. My hubby used to scare them off (unfortunately we are both allergic to cats) until we realized what a great job they are doing. We haven't seen any mice or rats for a number of years. Groundhogs however are another thing. They require big conibear traps!

Thanks Kevin for adding the link to this trap on your Amazon page. Their search window does not bring it up and KZbin only shows the large ones. Most do not know that the correct name is "The Connie's Bear Trap!" I've you them when traveling visiting south in Virginia and North Carolina but can;t find them in the Metro NYC area. Even Tractor Supply website doesn't bring them up even if you put bear or rat trap in their search box either. But these city rats are very educated and will avoid any trap that was a near miss. Sometimes you have to go to something very old to teach these varmints a new trick. Thanks again!

Most rat species have poor eye sight and run the length of the wall. A good trick is to put a few traps against each wall surface, as to slap towards the wall. Don't set the traps, don't bait the traps. Wait 4 nights and then before bed, put some rubber gloves on and set them all. Don't bait any of them. Also put some at random posts or objects in the middle of the space, facing away from the object whether it be a support post or dinner table legs. Again. No bait. A great way to judge the size of your rat problem. Rats are weary to new objects but are very willing to smother the trap if it hasn't caused harm in the past. One or two occasions with the trap and they will walk right over it if placed properly. The ones in the middle of the room/space is a stopping point for when they are fleeing. They will zig zag from object to object and run over it in efforts to find a good stopping place where they won't be seen. If all else fails a golden rule is "a rat will always lead you back to his home."

That would be great if there was a way to keep cats and small dogs from getting in there. Maybe one could put the wire mesh on the front too and make the rat go through the slot?
@alanwestport
@alanwestport 4 жыл бұрын
You would want to create a door with a hinge. The mesh would require unscrewing to get the dead rat out. Thats extra work. You could put some bricks around the front that would allow for a hole big enough for a rat to get through, but not a dog, or Opossum to get into. Bear in mind that a dog or cat will only show interest if the bait is something they might like such as meat or peanut butter for dogs. If you rub a cashew on the wood and throw a few into the trap you are unlikely to get dogs or cats. You can also use touch of Avocado cooking oil around the trap to draw them in.

A word of advice: only use conibears that have a safety latch on the main spring! F&T supply sells a secondary external safety clip for these. It holds the jaws open until the very last moment after setting. This safety clip is vital for using these traps alternately on woodchuck holes, squirrel poles, etc..

I don't know if you are putting your feed in any containers. ..we always used a big old floor model freezer .and set all the feed bags in that.. and any feed that gets spilled, we blew it out onto the dirt with the leaf blower just to keep the varmints out of that area...but I now use a 55 gallon metal garbage can with lid..and tighten it down to the handles..on the garbage can...works very well,,, but the big freezer was great...picked it up at a junk yard for a few bucks...no critters ever got into it...and during the humid summer months, I would hang small terry cloth hand towels over the bags to wick out moisture to prevent mold spores from growing...I still do this with my garbage can...have done this since back in the early seventies. ...and it stops that white fuzzy mold from growing inside the can....

Metal garbage cans with tight lids for feed storage. Can fit 2 whole 50# bags inside, even 3 bags if you put empty bags in first, then pour feed in each, about 1/4 at a time so all fill evenly (if you want to keep different types of feed separate). Beware of moisture which can result in mold, ruining feed.

The problem with traditional spring-type rat traps is that rats are clever and wary. They tend to approach the bait from over the back of the trap. When a rat springs the trap it just flips him into the air. Next time I'm going to build a box like yours to protect the back half of the trap.

May not be needed, but I was thinking that two pieces of coat-hanger wire could be used to hold the trap in place. They would be slid down through two holes in the top and into two holes in the floor. The wires would go down *between* the jaws, so the trap could not fall over. That way, the slit could be deeper so it didn't hit the back of the slot and shoot backwards when sprung. Drill two holes through the top, two holes through the bottom, about an inch and a quarter from the outer edges, 4 inches in from the opening, so they would be right in line with were the jaws rest. The two wires would be about 9" long, and bent at the top like the letter L, so the long part was 7" to 7 1/4" long, the same as the height of the box. The bent part would be a stop, and could be used to lift them out later. Put the trap in place, then insert each wire from the top so it goes down in between the jaws at either side, then into the lower hole.

I have a infestations of rats my neighbor let them go in my yard. Not thinking about how fast they multiply.. I thought I got rid of them but nope they’re everywhere. So I need a trap that will eliminate a bunch of them.

use peanut butter they seem to snatch the cheese peanut butter they must stay there to eat it for your feed use a metal barrel that way they can't chew through the plastic

Rats climb on your snap trap setting it off! Put it in a box will work as well.You can mount several conibears on a 2x4 , place the board 45 degrees to the ground, can catch several per night

Nice homemade trap Kevin. The snap trap you tried, that didn't work, is poorly designed. The trigger isn't sensitive enough. I've tried those and a rat would need to jump up and down on the trigger to trip it. I have found that the Victor snap traps are much more sensitive. You can even bend the "catch" a bit to make them more sensitive. Wiring a peanut to the trigger makes them very effectice. Good luck.

On your snap trap , smear some peanut butter on the bottom side of the trigger . They can only get at the bait if they are on correct side and stuff their snout underneath the trigger . WHAM !

55 gallon drum or an empty cattle protein bucket, metal rod, pvc pipe, a ramp, and peanut butter, and maybe some water in the drum... Also saw someone use peanut oil in a bowl to catch mice, they climbed in, then the oil made it so they couldn’t get back out!

Rats, breed dependent , can be pretty smart. Mice not so much. Roof or fruit rats can be pretty difficult.

Rats are very smart not the easiest to catch, I have plenty traps in the attic & in cubby hole of the wall that seperates the tub on one side & washing machine on the other nonetheless a rat will carefully lick peanut butter or nab the bait off the trap & without setting it off I can yet hear it in late night scratching around & knawing up in the attic I see that home depot can order small rat cage for 9$ doesnt kill just catches but can only be ordered online, I continue to look for other methods to catch rats was even thinking of making a box trap using the gopher hawk trap which works very well on gophers caught many of them with that trap.
