@@tunafishmaki SEM works by directing a beam of electrons onto a sample, releasing two forms of electrons (secondary and back-scattered electrons) and X-Rays. The 2 electrons are taken and are used for SEM imaging. The X-rays that it picks up can be used to detect elemental concentrations (known as EDX) down to a few micron depth. However, EDX gives limited information on the elemental concentration - It'll tell you how much of an element is present but won't tell you how each element is bound. XPS works by directing an X-ray beam to a sample, causing electrons to fly out and enter a detector. These electrons are then displayed on a graph as peaks, which gives very detailed information of the sample surface, to within 10 nanometre depth. For example, putting a block of pure silicon in an XPS will give two peaks; one for the bulk silicon and another for the silicon dioxide natively formed from the atmosphere (a bit like the rust you find on iron/steel). This can be quantified so you can calculate thickness and concentration of the silicon dioxide, something you can't do with the aforementioned EDX method

1 Issue with laptop reviews in general. Everyone talks about max brightness, no one talks about lowest brightness. Laptop OLED displays have a particular issue in low brightness called dirty screen effect / screen banding. Please talk about this. I personally had to face issue with that when i ordered XPS and again when I replaced it. Finally returned it for refubd
4 жыл бұрын
In the dark, may the low brightness not actually affected to the color on the screen and your eyes tho. What your problem then?
@rws5314 жыл бұрын
Do you work in the dark or something? Minimum brightness isn’t an issue for 95% of people, especially considering there is likely software which can compensate.
@shalokshalom4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely!
@hold1ng2764 жыл бұрын
Not many care about the lowest brightness. It makes things harder to read, thus introducing eye strain. At night, a normal person wont go as low as possible, instead hve it at a readable brightness, and if they r worried abt blue light, hve anti glare screens, night light on or computer glasses, as low brightness doesnt affect blue light emissions. However, say if ur using ur device next to a window, where the sun is really bright, a higher brightness is needed to make things readable. Therefore thats why reviews dont care abt lowest brightness

Yep, several AM4 motherboards support TB3 (e.g. X570 Phantom Gaming-ITX/TB3) so it's feasible at least on a desktop system
@therealb8884 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same? It would be a shame if AMD had issues with TB 3 in 2020.
@stale26654 жыл бұрын
It's likely both a cost and engineering issue. It is fully possible to support TB3 with an extra chip, but an extra chip is likely more expensive than having it integrated. Secondly, an extra chip needs space on the motherboard, and a bunch of new traces across the MB to hook it up to the CPU and external ports. Not a big problem on an enormous ATX motherboard, but it might increase complexity by a lot on a tiny laptop MB that is already very cramped.
@kanutinbonbin4 жыл бұрын
I went and looked to the TB3 controller in the Asrock mobo mentioned and there´s no mention of Intel TB3. It´s a proprietary USB-C to TB3 chip from Asrock: - ASRock Thunderbolt™ 3 Type-C USB 3.2 Gen2 Port (40Gb/s for Thunderbolt™ protocol; 10 Gb/s for USB3.2 protocol) So no, still no real native TB3 support on AMD and, as it looks, Intel is going the full "I WANT TO PROTECT MY IP'S SO SCREW YOU GUYS" route.

@@stale2665 It's probably gonna happen but Dell already did so much with this XPS update in such a short time (like really impressive they were able to catch up with the design to the 16" macbook pro, normally it takes laptop makers 3+ years - Thank you Dell). So maybe in a year or two (I kinda doubt it will happen next year since they need to make up the r&d cost). It will only happen if the demand for the new Ryzen in laptops will be so high that it would make sense for them not to make up their cost on this years model update and spend even more and make it on the next years model. And with the exception of overheating, I've loved everything about it. The battery is pretty short but I rarely use my laptop unplugged. Also I do wish the CPU was better (i9 which would probably overheat worse, or AMD Ryzen 4000's)... but this is still very fine for me. I really hope that the 15 and 17 are good. In my previous company all the management users were getting XPS13. Out of around 50 laptops, 75% of them had issues. Almost half of them had an issue with the video driver conflicting with the motherboard. When using an external monitor, the laptop refused to display the image on the laptop screen when disconnecting the external display. I`ve tried everything I knew, everything the internet had and everything that Dell suggested. On some I was able to fix them with updates, patching, uninstalling and reinstalling components or the OS. On too many to ignore, Dell had to replace the motherboard. One other common issue with most of them was the cooling fan. In their rush to make everything fit in that nice slim case, Dell miscalculated some fan space and about half of the laptops had fan issues (noises, not spinning or spinning in erratic cycles). Either total replacement of the fan or in a case, they replaced the whole laptop because the newly installed fan did not spin properly because of the case structure (no physical damage or bending tho). My personal laptop started making cracking noises 4 months after i`ve received it. I really hope that Dell improved these little things, the laptop overall was a nice piece of technology and it was faster than what i`ve used so far.

Agreed. XPS is famous for technical issues. On my XPS the battery got bloated and needs replacement for the 2nd time. The charger stopped working, and had to be changed a while ago. Thermals suck.. I will wait until the 2nd release of this new lineup.

GxSandy get the pro support worth every penny. I work in IT and we tried to save some by not getting it n it’s terrible. Basic support is garbage. Pro support will fix the laptop or give you a new one no questions asked.. for 3 years.
@Brittow4 жыл бұрын
@@dylan-nguyen The fact that you have to pay for a support that should be given for free in the first place is a huge red flag... I'm honestly running out of options of laptops and brands to buy, there's always some really harsh complaints

The way linus holds these products, half of me is having an anxiety attack over him dropping it and the other half is quietly hoping he will because it'll be entertaining

laptop reviews these days: Best laptop ever! but we wish it was more like the Asus G14. (but Asus G14 iitself s never considered)
@insertnamehere45094 жыл бұрын
nimaiiikun well I think the thing is that Asus made a wager that paid off on the raw power side but not on the other aspect. Yes it’s a competent machine, but in terms of build quality and features, it is behind these premium notebook line. For example: Screen (where Asus tops out at 2k 60, these are at 4K), trackpad size, webcam, thunderbolt, even just an option for a larger 15 or 16 inch line. Granted, props to them for making the wager and going with the top spec AMD cpu, but it’s still not there
@Yolomcswaggins69694 жыл бұрын
The G14 was great because it was one of the first to make use of the 4000 series, there's better amd options now though. The screen is trash on the G14, and it has bad cooling issues
@Hathos94 жыл бұрын
An AMD version of that would be the perfect laptop. Sadly, with an Intel processor it is DoA.

When Linus gets to the price reveal, I'm thinking that's too much money for a laptop with an Intel CPU in 2020
@Cizzzeron4 жыл бұрын
Just look at those temps... The AMD CPU would be less power cooler quieter and probably faster depending on workload. I'm in the market for a new laptop and am quite frustrated by the lack of options... Probably gonna be a t14 with the r7 in the end.

@@spritsfal5088 those without technical knowledge often don't want them. Fanboys and Clair the soccer mom down the road probably have little idea about price to performance of ryzen. I had to seriously convince my family to even consider ryzen...

Unless you really value the extra 5% render times, I don't think it makes much of a difference. If you're looking for value for money, you should probably look elsewhere as it's not a budget laptop lol. Same if you're looking for a gaming laptop.
