Now, you know I like to take the simplest approach when building WordPress websites - that goes for plugins as well as themes as well as custom code and SEO. Simple equals less code and faster sites. Faster Site equals a greener web and better performance scores and Core Web Vitals on Google Pagespeed Insights.
WordPress Block Themes and Full Site Editing defo fall into the “simple” bracket in my view - maybe in the context of lacking features for others (and let's not get into the editor UI/UX conversation 🙂) .
But it’s true, there are a few bits missing and if you’ve been following this channel you’ll know about this mini series I’m doing on the “missing Gutenberg blocks” (see the playlist here • Missing Blocks in Word... ) - this is another one of those for a component that is useful in so many ways and is a block that perhaps should be in core WordPress - let me know what you reckon in the comments below?
So, the unassuming “Table of Contents” component has a lot more to it than you might imagine. Done right, it can:
- Create a better UX
- Present your content in a more structured way
- Add internal links to your posts and pages
- Improve crawling and Indexing of search engines
- Possibly add extra links in your SERPs
- And generally ups the SEO of your pages, posts and site
Yeah, it’s not just a “nice to have” - it’s actually pretty essential as part of your SEO strategy.
And in this WordPress Tutorial I’ll introduce a genius, and what I think is the best plugin for a WordPress Table of Contents - it is “SimpleTOC - Table of Contents Block”
