@@planetfixer There is a universe where you can have both, you know. Plus, the definition of fun is different to people. Some like left-clicking on iron ore for 5 hours, while others like yelling at teammates for not attacking the mid lane. It isn’t about armchairing in Reddit going “ooo look they got X right” for people that like historical accuracy either. If you don’t care about historical accuracy, then you don’t care which war a game depicts, and thus who cares if Battlefield 5 has disabled women fighting the SS? It’s a shooter not a history lesson right?

@@zombieranger3410 yeah I know you can have both in an abstract sense but the reality is that people who don't have a strong opinion on the game will immediately gravitate towards the screaming of people who make a career holding unreasonably strong positions of games - if you shoot for both what will realistically happen is the anti-history fun people AND the Asperger's historian camp will both hate you for not fully aligning with them. Very easy for us to fantasise about "what if game did both" but the climate of media interpretation has changed so much now that it could never be recognised as good in both ways even if it was

To be honest... Call of Duty Spain At War mod is harder than the original, at least from my perspective. Ammunitions here are way more scarce, your rifles reload slower, and your SMGs deal way less damage, and it's a good balance. Story-wise though, I think this is a good plot to put in a history we rarely know, such as Spanish Civil War era.

27:20 For those who are wondering, the Requtes were the monarchists he mentioned in the beginning. They wanted to give the Spanish monarch Carl leadership to the throne because they thought he was the rightful ruler. Furthermore, they were also a big-time fan of the church, as most people on the nationalist side were. Requtes are also called Carlists, since that's who they supported. If y'all got any questions about the Spanish Civil War I probably got an answer since I love to study it. Also, that's exactly how you pronounce it good job!

The Spanish Civil War was more complex than just left and right. The Nationalists were an alliance of convenience, monarchists of all kinds, and Falangists (Catholic nationalists who were into corporatism, communes, anti Bolshevik and anti-capitalism). Its forces included militias of the Carlists and Falange, the military and colonial Moroccan troops (The latter were targeted more in the Republican propaganda.) The Republicans meanwhile were diverse, including fascists (Catalun Nationalist Party militias), anarchists, Trotskyites, the (weakened) government which was losing relevancy and later kicked out, especcially liberals and leftover conservatives. The Republicans were, by my studying, were to be taken over by the Stalinists, considering how deeply embedded the NKVD were and Soviet control over the Republican forces (Like the Air Force and such).

In the beginning it was made up of the rebels (Nationalists), and the government (Republicans), both filled to the brim with every fringe ideology possible in a country like 20th century Spain. And yes by the end the Republicans were basically a Soviet state, because the communists had successfully purged all opposition within, to the detriment of their own warfighting capability.

I am from Zaragoza, Belchite is 30 minutes by car, the old city really shows how hard the war was, Belchite was taken several times by both sides, every time one side took it the neighbors betrayed each other and Dozens of people were shot by both sides, currently it is said that the old city is haunted and hundreds of psychophonies have been made, all of them quite terrifying, if you visit the old city at night you really feel strange things and inexplicable sensations. As for the defeat of the Italians, it doesn't surprise me considering that during both world wars they got their asses fucked

Another incredible story from the Spanish Civil War is the bombing of the Basilica del Pilar by the Catalan Generalitat (Republican side). A plane dropped 3 bombs on the Basilica and none of them exploded. Some believe that it was the Virgin who prevented them from exploding and others that they simply forced the bombs to drop and that they really did not want them to explode because the plane crew was very religious. The Basilica of the Pillar is the 5th largest church in the world located in the 2nd longest square in Europe after Red Square in Moscow. I recommend everyone visit my city Zaragoza. It has more than 2000 years of history founded by Caesaraugusto, there are Roman, Muslim, Christian, Napoleonic and Civil War ruins

Notably a very well written and entertaining book, as long as you don't mind reading through the exposition in the first 10 or 20 pages and only about 150 pages long in total. Type /devmap (name of level here), this will restart the level and then finally Type /cg_fov (number), default is 65 degrees, or use /cg_fovscale (multiplier) with default cg_fov for higher fov, but default weapon zoom levels Example: cg_fovscale 1.4 (65 x 1.4) = 91 fov, higher fov, default weapon zoom cg_fov 91 = higher fov, higher weapon zoom. Or, you can just press the ~ key and type /cg_fov 80, the maximum fov value without needing to type /mapname to find out the level name and reloading the level with /devmap to use higher than 80 cg_fov or cg_fovscale.

Regarding the deserters near the beginning, the more hardcore left-wing factions on the Republican side took a lot from the Soviets, and this including political officers and the execution of your own men who weren't fervent enough in their beliefs. The Nationalists did it too, of course, but they're weren't quite so zealous (That's not to say they were any better)

Game starts with you being all but forced to join the Republicans when both sides used conscription and CNT forces specifically were volunteer formations left under equipped by the Republic because, even though they were on the same side in that war, the Anarchists were attempting a social revolution that would have ended the Republic anyway because anarchists don't want a state. Conscripts for the nationalists mostly never changed sides as the nationalists were militarily much more effective and the regions under their control were not catastrophic. Republicans controlled more territory initially but their conscripts were poorly trained and led, and once captured were inducted by the nationalists, which is how the nationalists ended up with such a big army by the end. They had low morale and desertion was common. The odd thing is that the protagonist changes units so often, and to some pretty prestigious ones. In republican zones there were serious economic issues, quite a few Spaniards volunteered in order to desert to the nationalists, and even more went into hiding until they took over. The Militias were eager, but the army who stayed on side were third rate (all the first rate troops were based in Morocco), let alone armed bands, the internationlists had quite some military experience, as did Soviet advisers, but other than that the situation was always grim for republican hopes of victory. Anarchists fought well, but they were strategically less useful due to acting independently. By comparison the nationalists were a mix of a mass military and many elite forces, even the Carlists were highly effective shock troops, though they took exceptionally high casualties. Franco's biggest worries in the war were transporting the Moroccan army and direct French intervention, other than that only the Soviets could have made a difference, and they focused a lot of effort on internal politics.

Air power was helpful to a certain extent, but the republicans would have lost the war even if the nationalists didn't have it, it just would have given the nationalists a much harder time. @@WillyShankspeare Most of the factions on the nationalist side weren't even fascists. Which is why Franco consolidating the factions weakened them so much. Even Franco himself wasn't a Fascist, but a ultra catholic, radical nationalist and monarchist (notably not the Carlist variant), he used the fascists just as much as the other factions in building a political settlement that empowered himself. Fascism is an actual political ideology and not just a byword for reactionary, though it is not the most fun ideology to research as its intellectual roots are esoteric and nonsensical, but that is the same with many of those types of ideologies.
