I actually used to live about 15 minutes away from Brooklands, and I would always visit there when I was younger to see the old cars and the Concorde. One time a volunteer offered to take me and my dad around a portion of the slightly more intact track in a refurbished early 1900s era race car during an event. We of course went quite slow but it felt so much faster. Unforgettable experiences at a historic track, if you're ever flying through Heathrow, its only about 25 to 40 minutes away, highly recommend a visit if your'e near that area!

Loved old Hockenheim. Unusually it was a better spectacle for the viewer rather than the spectator. Most of the overtaking happened at the 3 forest chicanes. The laps were quite long so spectators who were mainly in the stadium section and along the start/finish and Nordkurve didn’t get many passes of the cars either because the lap count was lower and only really saw any action either on the Agip Kurve entering the stadium section or on the giant screens without the benefit of commentary. All this led to a decline in ticket sales which in turn led to financial struggles which in turn resulted in the German Grand Prix being shared with the ‘European Grand Prix’ at the Nurburgring.

According to the guys who run the Abandoned Circuits channel, it was not in fact Herman Tilke that was to blame for Hockenheim "losing its character", in actual fact, he wanted to retain the layout that was used until 2001 (often in an oversimplified way referred to as the "old" layout, though it was the third layout). Though the owners of the track, fearful of the perceived challenge posed by the then brand new Lausitzring to the point where they feared losing the Grand Prix, wanted a new layout centred on the Stadium Section. The decision was not so much motivated by safety concerns, rather it was to increase spectator space and more importantly, security (a huge contributing factor in Rubens Barrichello taking his maiden win there in 2000, was a protestor making their way on to the track in the forest section while the Grand Prix was ongoing, even running across the track while cars were travelling at over 200mph).
@metalswifty23
@metalswifty23 17 күн бұрын
Honestly, most of the blame that gets thrown at Tilke isn't actually his fault. He had to work with set specifications and safety regulations, so it's a similar story for a good number of tracks.

The old Masaryk Circuit (Masarykův okruh) in Brno Czech Republic. Used by F1 till 1949, meaning F1 wasn't called F1 yet and there was no F1 championship per se, but the track was amazing, just like the old Nürburgring and the old Spa Francorchamps. It would be fantastic to have someone either make a video on that or give it some love as part of a video like this one. In 1949, future F1 world champion drove into a grandstand in one of the forest sections. Almost all of the track is public roads now, but among locals that turn is still Farinova zatáčka (Farina curve). Big shame that from 1950 the communist regime decided it wanted to focus on motorbikes, and no longer on car racing. I reckon that we would be racing in Brno, Czech Republic instead of Budapest, Hungary if this decision hadn't been made back then, and honestly, even the layout of the new Brno circuit is way more interesting and fun than that of the Hungaroring.

Hey Jake, pretty new to your content but I do enjoy it! Something I am not new to is motorsport and specifically American motorsport, so let me provide some context for the American racing you don’t understand how we can watch lol. Many Americans love some circle track racing because the actual racing is almost always good. Side by side, door to door racing almost constantly. Actual strategy makes an appearance more often than not (NASCAR still refuels and stops more than once a race), cars can take damage and not have to retire almost immediately because every single point matters and they are awarded all the way through the field. And most importantly, there are no silly overtaking and defending rules. If you’re faster, take the spot. If you don’t have the pace but you do have the position, don’t be surprised if you get moved. NASCAR typically does not get involved in most wheel to wheel confrontations minus a few notable exceptions, which is often referred to as “self policing policy” but will penalize an egregious case like they did this year to Austin Dillon (wrecking two cars in one corner for the win). But bump and runs are defensible moves, so plan accordingly. While nothing beats the excitement of waiting for the lights to go out on an F1 grid, I do love how when a NASCAR race ends I know who won. Whereas when I watch F1 I can watch eight laps of an amazing wheel to wheel fight, and then have it all undone by a time penalty because someone crossed a white line by a centimeter or something ridiculous. There are merits to both and I am glad I thoroughly enjoy all of it. Keep up the great work!

Abandoned tracks where you can still see remnants of them are probably my favourite. Hockenheim and Fuji from these videos for example. Two more examples are the Red Bull Ring and Interlagos. RBR you can still see some of the track running alongside the current straight after turn 1, and some of the roads connecting to the main Interlagos circuit are part of the older layout. I think you can even still map out the full layout if you look carefully enough.

1) My dream German Grand Prix is alternating between Nürburgring GP-Strecke and Hockenheimring (whatever old or new). 🇩🇪 2) My dream Japanese Grand Prix is stuck in Suzuka, but if the Japanese Grand Prix can alternating between Suzuka and Fuji, i will accept it 💯%. FYI, one circuit per country is my dream calendar, so I will not accept the Pacific Grand Prix. Sorry. 🙏🇯🇵 3) I actually have no idea about the French Grand Prix. If the Bugatti Circuit have a FIA Grade 1 license, it's not problem at all, because we can stuck at that track (like what MotoGP™ did for the French Motorcycle Grand Prix). But currently, they only have a FIA Grade 2 license, so my realistic and current dream French Grand Prix is alternating between Nevers Magny-Cours and Paul Ricard at the Le Castellet. 🇫🇷 4) I miss the Malaysian and Turkish Grands Prix so badly! Indeed, the "Triple Crown of Tilkedrome" is Sepang, Sakhir, and Istanbul. 🇲🇾🇧🇭🇹🇷 My request: The *BEST* & *WORST* Abandoned F1 Engine Manufacturers

17:17 if you look at circle tracks like the super speedway tracks it can actually be harder to understand oval racing. Short tracks are where oval racing really shines. Everyone can see all the action and within a few laps, the leader is usually passing lapped traffic. It can be intense.

@@jakemorganGP yeah I've heard youtube messes with stuff. But with trial and error we learn :) I recommend testing the sound with a few different headphones and systems. Imagine what people are watching these videos from, usually its not a 600€ sennheiser headphone but rather a phone speaker or cheap airpods, 2.1 PC audio system etc.. obviously you cant set the audio to be perfect on all of those but you can find the middle road quite easily. Back when I did some amateur audio engineering I used to go to a few of my friends house to see how it sounded there, I even bought a cheap pair of speakers to check stuff trough those. From those I learned I had way too much bass in the songs lol. Anyways, I did that for a decade and still have no clue what I'm supposed to do, so have fun learning :D

He talks about us Yanks driving in circles, yet Brooklands is an oval... Eh, all good. Oval racing is an art of its own, but it doesn't look quite as spectacular on TV. A lot of us miss Riverside. NASCAR races there were fantastic, particularly in the 70s and 80s when the cars still used bias-ply tires and slid around a lot. As far as modern tracks go, Istanbul was one of the best. A shame that it has troubles, as I'd rather watch a race there over the ongoing disaster that is Yas Marina any day, any time. Looking forward to his take on Watkins Glen. For Indy cars and NASCAR, that track never disappoints.

Riverside may have been in the low desert, but it wasn't terribly remote, even in 1960: There are some famous photos of a grand prix car being driven from a garage in downtown Riverside to the track via Highway 60. In later years F1 teams would test at Riverside (and at Willow Springs) prior to the Long Beach Grand Prix due to its close proximity. One such test saw Rick Mears set a faster time than Nelson Piquet in a Brabham.

Knew BB Raceway (GT7) felt and looked familiar, IT'S BROOKLANDS AT HOME!! Edit: Nascar is popular because you can actually watch all of the racing in your seat without a jumbotron. Americans are simple folk. If they go out to watch a race, they want to watch the race live. Not on the tv. Also helps that it USED TO be street cars stripped down and beefed up. You see a bunch of cars you would see in everyday traffic blasting around a track, you want to have one of those cars. The whole, "Win on Sundays, sell on Mondays." thing comes from it.

17:21 While yes, we don’t have many road courses compared to ovals, it’s mainly the factor that the cars, which are easy to spin in the first place, are so close together about 90% of the time that even turning the wheel at most 5° could mean the difference of going home or staying late into the night to party. Especially at Daytona and Talladega. Not to mention, while teams exist, there are no (if not, extremely rarely, I can only count 2 off the top of my head) team orders. Unfortunately, NASCAR’s officiating has become…questionable to say the least. All of the crown jewel events this year, except for the Southern 500 at Darlington, have ended in controversy because of officiating.
