Agree with the comment that the DX7 is still relevant. It was actually way ahead of its time, a digital keyboard released almost 40 years ago, with 16 note polyphony, 100 levels of touch sensitivity AND the sound is different for each of those 100 steps! Even today, this is impressive. The results too sound both acoustic (kind of) and synthetic, a really unique sound that still has'nt been fully explored yet.

As a chiptunist, I can attest to this chip being a masterclass. The only thing that separates the sounds of this keyboard from being among the god chips is its monotimbralness.

Also, it has an inherent "nostalgic" sound since it was used so much in the 80s, which may be a downside to some, but it definitely still has a place in genres rooted in nostalgia like vaporwave, hypnogagic pop, and outsider house.

Beautiful bit of playing, the DX7 is truly a world class instrument and sounds absolutely beautiful through a quality effects processor such as the Strymon you are using, I have just put a DX7IID in my studio, waited a long time to find a good one, paid very little for it and it looks just like it came out of the shop yesterday, mine will be going through a Lexicon or straight in to Logic, great video 👍🏻

Rhiannon studios Thank you so much. I am not the best player in the world :) That’s the thing I found too. You put it through a real quality FX and boom! It is like it was made yesterday. A lexicon would be great for sure.I got one of the cheaper lexicons coming next month too so will be able to mix it up a bit. For me, I just got bored with using the soft synth presets on my records and sounding like everybody else. I used this keyboard a lot on my last production. Personally, I've enjoyed all those sounds. Frequency modulation synthesis, as well as the Yamaha DX7 itself, has opened many doors in the unexplored portions of music. I use a simulator of the DX7, but it is capable of providing a pocket-sized FM synthesizer, along with its thirty-two customizable algorithms.

I suspect “E Piano 3” (or a tone similar to it) is heard on the Elton John *Too Low for Zero* title cut during the second and third choruses. I’m also hearing other sounds that may have been utilized in the recordings made by Don Dorsey out in Anaheim, CA, USA. People have said frequently how the DX7 was a big seller that lived out its usefulness almost as quickly as it blew onto the scene, but that there are still many aspects of it that we need to grow into in terms of programming it.
