This formula really hates small atoms, as they are much more bumpy, and way less homogenous.

Today the binding energy of each known nucleus has been measured and is well known. We do not need this formula any longer.

That seems similar to saying 'we don't need Bernoulli equations because we have really accurate flow metres and the Navier Stokes equations" Empirically derived formulas can provide clear pathways to understanding how our current knowledge has progressed.
