Tal, this interpretation is wrong. It is obvious that this is a cry for help from the members about Andrew's infinite rizz. You see, at the end Rob, Joe and Zubin are all singing in third person when they say "he's sold" which would imply none of those three were sold. Ross is the auctioneer and so can't get sold. This means that only Andrew could've been sold at this part. We know Andrew stole Sally from Ross so this is very likely. Can't believe you completely over looked this obviously correct interpretation, Tal 😞

I actually interpret this song more like POV of different guys, each telling a snippet of the info about themselves, but failing to impress any of ones who are bidding (emphasized by the fact that each verse is sung by different person, and that contridiction "love you till the day you drop" and "when i disappear") and then there's the last guy, who claims himself to be perfect, sure, he might not be, but he can present himself like he is, so girls, of course, want him... I don't feel like this is the intended interpretation just because the song seems like it's talking about multiple people. "The Bidding" is multiple men bidding over the same woman, each stating their qualities (also why they are sung by different members excluding Joe who plays two of them) So the song has 3 men who are a homeless alcoholic, a slave pretty much lmao, a dude who's dated tons of women but never stayed with any of them, and a rich guy. How you interpreted "Every man here has a price" is right, but "every man here" would be literal since it's referring to multiple men. "Won't these gentlemen suffice?" also fits into this because none of them seem to tick all the boxes and have some kinda flaw. Idk what's going on with the final verse ("I promise i'll be all you need" and onward) but it could be a 5th person who's a match? I'm not sure. But obviously, every interpretation is valid with Tally Hall lmao. This is just what I hear from the lyrics. The only thing I see not making sense is the pronoun at the end saying "And *he's* sold" instead of she which could imply the men are the ones being sold instead of the woman? Or maybe i just don't know exactly how biddings work lmao.

my theory is that the song takes place in an alternate universe where humans have abandoned the traditional concept of love and devalued it to having a monetary price. the guy is homeless and has a lot of problems such as alcoholism which makes his price really high, so not a lot of people bid on him. he reveals he's "been in like a thousand times" claiming that he has dated several women and has broken several hearts and got his heart broken as well. he also reveals he "graduated at the top" meaning he did really well in school and college, but nobody wants him because of his issues and his past. he eventually gets so desperate he tries and fails to convince any woman to bid him off, saying things like "i promise i'll be all you need" and "you'll never have to shop around", but nothing works because they're all too busy bidding other men because they're so desperate for love, they'll take anything they can get, which is why "the prospects are good but the dates never great". at the end he finally gets sold.

My interpretation is that each little verse (sleeping in a cardboard box, training like a Pavlov dog, been here like a thousand times, like to take advantage of the bourgeoisie) is a different man and the song is about a bidding, like an auction. The way it’s structured is two single men speak and make their case as to why these women should want them, and the auctioneer interrupts them again persuading the women to date these guys. Then at the end (I promise I’ll be all you’ll need) it’s all the men singing at once all pleading for these women to take them and showing how they all have the same goal: Be everything the woman needs (except the third guy, he’s probably lying to get the women to bang him) then it finishes with everyone including the auctioneer singing at once (So many ladies are wanting for mates) about the whole subject this song is talking about and it ends with one of the men being sold, which I see as up to interpretation. But this is an interesting analysis, I never thought about it that way.

I have to disagree that it's all one guy, and not because it's 3 different people singing. To me, it's 4 different men, all with different problems that make them less attractive.
