I have been waiting for this moment since the very first report, and the video "Big Boy Going Home"! So much history! The countdown has reminded me of the approaching Christmas Holliday from back when I was a kid! Following the story of the restoration of the 4014, and even being privileged to have the opportunity to see the very insides of the Big Boy locomotive during restoration! Finally, the moment has arrived!! What an experience! I would like to extend a grateful "Thanks" to Ed and his crew, for making this restoration possible. I would also like to thank Ian and Casey for their help with the drone footage! Their skills are phenomenal! I would love to extend a heartfelt thanks to our viewers and commenters, many of whom we met along this journey! It's totally amazing that the restoration of the 4014 Big Boy Locomotive could bring so many people from across the globe, together!

This was fun to edit, except right in the middle of editing the computer turned into the "steaming pile of poo emoji". So I grabbed the "spare" system which almost worked. Then pulled the drives out of the dead (really dead) computer and stuck them in a really old computer. And that too almost worked. So the show was made by switching computers depending on which software I needed.

We shoot like we drive. Zen commuting. Remembering that at all times half of all the cars in the world may be in front of you, but the other half are behind you. And you will get where you need to be just as fast if you "go with the flow". AND you will be happy and calm instead of angry and frustrated. GREAT VIDEO! The aerial footage(drone) really makes the day. FWIW. Trains Magazine reported "Business owners and local economic development officials say hotels have been booked solid and restaurants have been packed wherever the big 4-8-8-4 makes an overnight stop". This was on their Newswire feed. Also Karyn, having over many years of driving trucks I would not want to be doing 65mph in places in Weber Canyon not over Parley. That I did not see any reports of serious accidents following the train is the good side. I can remember all those years ago chasing 4449 down the coast along US-101 back in 1976. Wish I could have been there. Many thanks again for sharing your adventure.

Thats a 4K Mavic Pro drone. Shot in 4K raw so I can adjust the color in editing. The footage looks almost black and white on the camera files. AND Ian really knows where to put the drone to get the best footage. All those shots are really one long shot starting over the pond at the east bound rest area and then speeding high and down canyon to get the Devil's Gate and a bit of lower canyon. In the show about finding good locations for the Wasatch Grade we pointed out that "if" we had a drone thats the shot we would want. At the time we didn't know if Ian could be there or not. He's working a big feature and thought he could not get away. ANWAY he DID!! In the "finding good locations" we really tell everyone what at shots are without being too obvious. Don't want to give away the best fish''en holes! PS I have worked on 2 IMAX films but only in sound. Which is my "thing".

I have to agree with all the comments so far that this is the best video so far. The drone work was superb and a delightful surprise, many thanks to Ian and Casey. I am still amazed by footage that shows the convoy of traffic following along and how the authorities and Union Pacific were tolerant of some minor trespass and parking breaches to allow everyone a fair chance of a view of this moment. I was also interested to learn that UP has planned for 4014 to tour their entire system over the summer to share this marvel far and wide. Should be interesting.....

I’m feeling for Ed and the crew. After years of 60 hour weeks getting ready they have been living on and with this train now for over a week. Someone brought up wanting to see Big Boy and Challenger double head. Don't hold your breath. Challenger needs an overhaul. My wife and I had tickets to ride the train back to Evanston on 12 May. Part of the package was a private tour of the train on 11 May. The tour started out with a presentation/ question and answer session. The first presenter was the UP vice president(I don't remember his official title) in charge of the steam program among other things Then Ed gave a presentation and answered questions. When ED was just about done the VP came back up and brought up the Challenger. Apparently one of the group asked him about the overhaul. He said they had decided not to make a decision until 4014 was done. The audience kept pressing him like "is that a maybe". He said "maybe no" more than once. He finally said that if it were up to him no. Then he said we just have to decide what to do with it. We know they had many extra parts made for 4014 to hopefully use on Challenger but that does not sound very encouraging. Of course he is not the top dog so anything is possible.

John Burger 3985 is in really bad shape. Needs everything 4014 did and a lot more. Two to three times as many stays. Most of the firebox needs to be replaced but the big thing is two sections on the boiler shell are bad. So it can be done but twice perhaps three times the expense of big boy.

Once upon a time I was requested to join a team looking to restore the 4014 long before the UP got the idea. The AQMD in California put the brakes on the idea and I am glad someone managed to get the 4014 out of Pomona (and California) so it could be run again. It did amaze me at the time the pristine condition of the cab and all the controls ( everything was there, down to the engineers notes on the last run in - it was run / driven in, not towed-). The one advantage this one ( and only one in my humble opinion ) Big Boy survived so well was that the Railroad Museum in Pomona California was in the middle of the county fairgrounds and had 24 hr security. It was a lot of fun crawling all over that monster, the firebox was huge inside!
@ToyManTelevision5 жыл бұрын
They always said it would run again. But the reality of what that would take was problem. When UP decided to restore a big boy 4014 was a candidate. As were others. But the group in Pomona became ok with loosing their pride and joy in order to see it get restored correctly. Over budget UP originally thought it was a 4 million project. Keep in mind they had the crew and shop to do it and it still cost perhaps 7 million. This is the really of what it takes to pull this off. Thanks UP and the Steam Crew.

Rob NAustin sadly no. It’s Richard Band. And he wrote it to use on videos. I bought it from smartsound. Richard writes music mostly for tv commercials. This album is just Richard Band 6 and the music is called Americana. It’s based on Aaron Copland mostly Appalachian Spring. But also Fanfare For The Common Man. It comes from smart sound broken up by measures and instruments so the editor (me) can alter it to fit the mood and picture. But it won’t play except on their software because of that. You can go to smartsounds web site and look for Richard band and they have a demo and there may be a way to record it. Are you on Facebook?

Any idea how they turned the engines around? I did see another video where the #844 was running backwards while #4014 was being filled with water.
@karynfelix-the-Cat5 жыл бұрын
LOL! Yes... On some of the freeways, like Interstate 80 through Wyoming, we have an 80 MPH speed limit. Mostly, because the towns and cities are far and few between. Now... "Speed Limit" seems to be lost on some motorists. "Speed Suggestion" might be more appropriate. I have been driving at an even 80 mph, but have had other motorists whiz around me like I was in a parking lot, looking for a parking space! We missed the 844 running backwards.. But did see another motorist on a frontage road DRIVING backwards!!!
@ToyManTelevision5 жыл бұрын
Which is why the normal speed is 90-100. If they posted the limit at 110 people would go 125. In a pickup truck Afterburners when needed. They turn the locomotives on a "wye" track. At ogden its called Bridge Junction, where the old SP interchanged with the UP and the very old Salt Lake, San Pedro and Los Angles. THe line to Salt Lake in this case. Anyway a Y shaped interchange where you can do a three point turn with an entire train.

dizguy89 hi. Yes the music is by Richard Band. He sells it on the internet for use in films. Amazing music!

Big Boy ran beautifully, other than a few minor things needing to be adjusted. Interesting note, seems like 844's cylinder piston packing was kind of leaking on parts of the trip. Hopefully they get that fixed now that both are back in Cheyenne.
@ToyManTelevision5 жыл бұрын
Yup. 4014 had a bad packing leak in the front Engeneer side. And 844 copies everything the big boy does! Easy fix and no problem at all. The source of all human knowledge, the internet, the packing problem stopped the crew from getting to Greeley on the Thursday night run to test the locomotive. As usual the internet is wrong. The packing was noisy but that’s about it. Ed waited until sunset to avoid to many photos getting out before the big Christening event. They had the diesel tow them back because the crew died. 12 hours on the clock. And Ed was not going to let some random relief crew run his big boy. That’s why they put the diesel at the back when they left Cheyenne. They knew they would run out the clock.

Hi. I get my music from Smart Sound. That’s by Richard Band from 3 pieces he calls “Americana”. Sort of based on Aaron Copland.

Never boring ever! The Big Boy next to the Golden Spike Celebration Hmm? tough call, tough call. I'm going with the Trans-continental Railway because it solidified the nation east to west that opened up opportunities that prior to that were unimaginable. Prior to this everything either went around South America or the jungles of Central America or which both were perilous from either shipwreck or disease. The costs in time and money were lowered as well in what used to take months only took days. The connection also provided that other routes were possible leading to the Burlington Route in the northern states and the Southern Pacific in the southern territories. One thing I don't understand is that as wildly successful as this venture was in the attempts to duplicate it elsewhere it was either met with fizzle or failure. The Trans-Siberian Railway never really had the bang that the United States had in 1869 and Cecil Rhodes never did connect Cairo to Capetown so you see I guess what was created in Utah back in 1869 really was quite special.

Between the Civil War ending and the railroad being finished there has never been that kind of growth in America sense. Suddenly people in New York had cheep fresh produce and people in California had current news and affordable equipment. AND really felt for the first time like part of America. The railroad also had a telegraph! When the Civil War ended it took a week for the news to wander west as a rumor. Became a standing joke that a million "hicks" in the west didn't even know the war was over. Not a joke in the west. AND now they could sell all the produce they could grow. A second gold rush, only this one never played out! We were adding states so fast they couldn't even find a current American flag for the Golden Spike Event! The one they used was months old and so missing several stars. Nothing like it anywhere.

Ps. We are driving out to promontory point in a few weeks. In part as a joke. “Where is the golden spike?” But mostly because you can now drive on the causeway! Between Ogden and “the point”!

Anyone know why they didnt have the UP6936 on the run? It would have seemed more appropriate for the occasion.
@ToyManTelevision5 жыл бұрын
It’s finicky. But your right. That would be cool. They usually only run it once or twice a year and for this special trip they needed 100% reliable and something they could change out if needed.

Nice video. But would have preferred the raw sound track and sounds for the full video. Or simply no sound at all for some sections (i.e. drone camera). The back ground music, when applied, I personally found annoying. Turned off sound for a lot of this video, so not be be distracted by the visual splendor of the Big Boy -- the engine should be the point, not some background, added music. If can not get original sound then best to just let the sight of the engine take center stage. Much better at, for example, 5:21.Original sights. *And* original sound. But then ruined it at 5:50. All, only in my humble opinion, of course.

It derailed :(
@karynfelix-the-Cat5 жыл бұрын
Yes.. I just read about that.. :"( I suppose things like that can happen with a locomotive that big. We witnessed the Big Boy and 844 coming into Evanston having to stop, because there were a pile of huge rocks too close to the tracks, which had to be moved. In Rock Springs, low hanging tree branches prevented the Big Boy and 844 from pulling into the resting place at the depot. If anything... issues, like these, tell us just how BIG these locomotives are! Looks like the derailment was remedied. Whew! Right??
@railfan17625 жыл бұрын
@@karynfelix-the-Cat ya and what I'll say is terrible is if it derailed worse there was gonna be another 5 years fixing it it's such a shame the quality of work my generation does compared to people who know what there doing

@@karynfelix-the-Cat and also the fact that this steam engine is one of a kind the next best canadate for a new big boy is the one by me in Frisco Texas and it would be a shame if we lose this one I pray that this is a lesson to the track layers and the union Pacific to place tougher rails and test the turn radius the mallet type engines cause a lot of wear and tear on the rails every turn could potentially crack the rails I'm just glad 844 didn't derail to and I hope and pray that another accident doesn't happen to the big boy it would be ashame
