The Great Train Case continues across Wyoming and into Utah! This week we chase through the night to Evanston Wyoming where we really get out first up close look at what well be the best restoration of a steam locomotive. And in this case the largest steam locomotive in the world, one of, if not the, largest steam locomotives ever built.
Here at Evanston the locomotives are placed in the siding for 48 hours to accommodate track work. Also here at Evanston they have been working on the shop roundhouse and depot for years and they are working RIGHT NOW to get more finished. Then on to Ogden down the Wasatch Grade in Echo Canyon to celebrate the driving of the golden spike on May 10, 1869. Where our story will continue next Sunday!
Evanston’s Historic Roundhouse & Rail yards were constructed in 1912-1914 by Union Pacific Railroad and features one of the last intact roundhouses on the UPRR line. In 2009, the city was able to refurbish the first of four sections of the Round-house as a public facility. The bi-level structure includes a spacious gallery, un upper level lounge, three small boardrooms and/or one large classroom. It also contains an elevator and two kitchenettes. Roundhouse Section One can easily accommodate up to 1,300 conference attendees and exhibitors. With a state-of-the-art audio/visual system, stages and podiums, banquet tables and chairs, the facility is fully equipped to host events of nearly any size. Across the plaza is the Machine Shop (renovated in 2004), a 17,000 sq. ft. building with a catering kitchen. The Roundhouse & Machine Shop can be rented together or separately. In addition, the community has an ample selection of caterers available to service such occasions. The City of Evanston proposes a minimal flat fee charge for the use of the facility. Reservations must be made as soon as possible, as the facility is used frequently throughout the year, especially during the summer months.
From their web site:
The Roundhouse gallery/ballroom can hold up to 900 attendees. The Portland Rose Classroom can accommodate 115 guests. Three small boardrooms can be sectioned off and each can hold 21 guests. The Upper Mezzanine Area can be used as classroom space, as well, and holds a capacity of 200.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The "Pacific Railroad" and later as the "Overland Route") was a 1,912-mile (3,077 km) continuous railroad line constructed between 1863 and 1869 that connected the existing eastern U.S. rail network at Omaha, Nebraska/Council Bluffs, Iowa with the Pacific coast at the Oakland Long Wharf on San Francisco Bay. The rail line was built by three private companies over public lands provided by extensive US land grants. Construction was financed by both state and US government subsidy bonds as well as by company issued mortgage bonds. The Western Pacific Railroad Company built 132 mi (212 km) of track from Oakland/Alameda to Sacramento, California. The Central Pacific Railroad Company of California (CPRR) constructed 690 mi (1,110 km) eastward from Sacramento to Promontory Summit, Utah Territory. The Union Pacific built 1,085 mi (1,746 km) from the road's eastern terminus at Council Bluffs near Omaha, Nebraska westward to Promontory Summit.

I remember seeing a video several years ago when they were TRYING to get Big Boy to move a few inches, the beginning of his journey to be restored! This video is wonderful! To see him looking shiny and new... "Thrilling" barely begins to describe it! I'll probably never get across the country to see Big Boy in person, so I'm very grateful for your dedication in making your videos to share with the world -- THANK YOU! My own experience with restored steam locomotives involves two made in the Roanoke VA shops for Norfolk and Western: #611 ("The Queen of Steam") and #1218 -- both are currently in the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke, but to see them steaming along the tracks in years past was a heart-clenching experience, so I can totally relate to how you must have felt seeing Big Boy on the rails again! #611 is elegance incarnate, and #1218's piercing whistle actually made my blood VIBRATE! I think I was born two decades too late... 😺💕🐾

It’s been a trip of a trip. We are in green river recuperating. Big boy is here for three days. And we need to gear up for the Rat Fink and edit some video. And treat our sunburn. And mow the lawn. And.... so it goes. Big boy is coming there soon! Schedule not set. Still debating whether they continue to Portland or turn east to salt lake. But will be at the museum in Sacramento in September. Or August but I guessing early September. And the narrow gauge convention at almost the same time. Wow!! Stay well! We are driving in the morning

Ah, did anyone notice that diesel locomotive #4017 is parked right across the track from #4014? I understand that diesel #4014 was renumbered, so sad. It would have been way cool to have had diesel #4014 as the assist loco, after all it pulled the Big Boy home for the rebuild. Then after the trip to Ogden, renumber the diesel. Once again, way to go Toy Man, excellent screwing around.

I appreciate the fact that you lingered and shot some of the lubricators, valve gear and power reverser. I may be wrong but Ed gave a talk at last years train show about the restoration and he said they will leave the lubricators on full until the parts wear in .. then they will back off the lube once worn in. Should be less obvious leaking once broken in. Maybe I'm wrong ... not sure you can even adjust mechanical lube output. Anyone out there have a guess? It makes sense to over lube while breaking in. Thanks for great shots. Stay safe on the highways.

We are in Evanston right now. Just got the most amazing footage! And drone footage. Our feet have called a strike. For us this is a real problem. Not keen on crossing a picket line but when it’s your own feet on strike.... as I contemplate that I hope I don’t need to cross the picket line to go to the bathroom. Perhaps I can enter into binding arbitration cause we want to get over to the roundhouse at golden hour because they have parked the train next to the old powerhouse at the roundhouse. Need to shoot that up!!

The oil over the motion is probably because the piston rod glands on the leading motion leaked for the first few days and the crew have not had a chance to clean it off. This most likely how the engines would have looked in service if the maintenance was starting to lack. In this case though it is part of the running in from the rebuild.

So awesome to see a big boy working. My favorite 4012 in Scranton used to take my kids to steam town and clime in the cab and look at the massive size The fire 🔥 box is so big they had steam jets to move the coal around so cool. Was the Erie Tripplex bigger than the big boy or was the big boy larger
@ToyManTelevision
@ToyManTelevision 5 жыл бұрын
Triplex is much more powerful and I think longer. But hard to use as a single locomotive as it breaks couplers When hooked to a long train. Usually used as a helper at the back. So some argue it’s not really a “locomotive”. Big boy is “bigger” overall and heavier. So it’s a debate.
@jokerproduction5135

Toy Man Television well the big boy is a more practical engine still in service today if not the biggest by def Definitely more Successful of the two the matt shay will always have my heart ❤️ be cause of my proximity to Susquehnna and the Starucca viaduct and it’s unique look 👀 as to weather or not it’s a locomotive 🚂 because of the job it preformed pusher or use over long distances it’s still a loco 😝

God! I feel terrible for the 844, it's like the 844 is being ignored n no one is paying attention to it, n the 4014 is like the new celebrity of the Union Pacific, n the 844 is like the lone child of the family, n it's basically all like this; Big Boy: "Hello everyone. I'm very pleased to meet you all." This was when they were waiting there until they were given clearance; Big Boy: "Since I've got some time here with you all, let me tell you some of my stories from when I used to work on this railroad back in the day." 844: "*sigh* I guess since 4014 here is getting all the attention, nobody wants to see me anymore. But at least I'm still loved in many ways. No matter what, I'll always be the "Living Legend", and I'll still be in the hearts of all enthusiasts!"

Hope you got at least some rest beyond a few hours, and were able to make some awesome memories- thanks again for sharing your stuff. I've done my own little tribute to the 4014 in a video game I play, and if you want to see it, I can post or send you the links.

Thank you both for this video...and the many others you have posted. My son and I made primary use of your reconnaissance of the run from Evanston to Ogden to pick a couple of spots where we could photograph the train on its return run last Sunday. And it worked beautifully. It was also a pleasure to meet you in person last Friday at Promontory, and thank you for all your efforts.

At 9:10 it is not really normal to have all that oil leaking out. The right front piston rod leaks more then it should. You can see puffs of steam on that rod when under load and with every puff of steam there is steam oil. With the tight schedule they likely just did not have time to fix it.

Thank you for the video... I'm from indonesia and really love about big boy and the living legend 844... There was a Mikado 2-8-2 in my country, made in Germany (Fried Krupp) built in 1950 and had a plan to be restore from many years ago but until now it is just a plan, never done... Knowing about big boy resurrect from her sleep, i feel so happy and it's spectacular!! Cheers from Indonesia!!💞💕💓

We just watch the edit and comment on that. Never figure out ahead of time other than to research the subject and then just do it “live” as we watch the edit. It’s how they did “travelogue” films in the 50s and 60s only live in a theater. We sort of do the same thing recorded onto the edit because I used to love those old screenings. For one night only! Highland High auditorium. Mr and mrs McGahn present their trip to Africa! The best was Warren Millers ski films. They became so popular he had to give up doing them with live narration and record the narration on the track.

You guys are awesome. Thanks for posting this. The #844 sounds really sad and bummed out. That sweet engine sounded depressed this morning as well as it departed the Ogden Union Station. I did meet a guy from Tokyo, and one from England as well. They both flew in just for this experience. I sure wish I had the time and money to chase this locomotive. I'm glad I can follow it in video!

An incredible shot of the 4014 leaving an exhaust plume longer than the train itself on that crisp morning because it conveys the power the Big Boy's had in its heyday of the 1940s when they burned Coal.

This is without a doubt one of the best videos I have seen over the past several days, covering this historic event. I think the footage where they had to run slow because of the track and ballast issues was actually amazing. Your close up and commentary about Big Boy was excellent. Thank you for doing these episodes.

@@ToyManTelevision Thank you, it'll take me right back to my childhood then. The great Pennsy & C & O steamers I saw when a babe and they were decommissioned thereafter! WOW. Thanks for the heads up, dear sir! I'll get in touch with the UP or keep up with any news that you may have. I really appreciate the heads up as I am sure most of your viewers will as well! Wouldn't it be nice to see an AC 10 restored. From Wikipedia - "Had it not been for the negotiating efforts of the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society in the 1950s, 4294 likely would have been scrapped along with all of the other SP cab forward locomotives. As a result, 4294 is the only SP cab forward that has been preserved. At one time, it was hoped that 4294 could be restored to operating condition. According to Calif State Railroad Museum personnel, the biggest impediments toward such a project are the estimated costs and the current policies of both Union Pacific Railroad and BNSF Railway in regards to operations. The cost of such a restoration is estimated between $1 million and $1.5 million, an amount that the museum feels would be prohibitive given the current prospects for its eventual operation." There are times when you just wish you had money to burn, baby! Good night & thanx! arthur.
