I think one of the main reasons why marriages are so expensive is also because a lot of decisions are only taken by the PARENTS of the bride and groom , many a times the kids would not even want something grand but they give in due to their parents' emotional blackmail. The day the bride and groom start sponsoring their own wedding with their own money, people may not spend so much.

I am from Sikkim and in our state basic wedding cost starts from 3-4 lakh and lavish ones to 20 max... and that too is returned when as guest gives around 1000rs to 2000rs as help irrespective of wether they are rich or poor or more plus gifts thus it will equalize and no one is in debt....even I say many a times people gets more than what they have spent. It is same for funeral, and there I haven't heard anything like dowry at my state or in our community and same goes way back to my grandparents era too.

Excellent analysis. Cost of Wedding = (Cost of Wedding Hall + Clothes + Food) * No of Days + Miscellaneous. No of Days could be 1 or more as many these days want to have Sangeeth and Reception. Miscellaneous are Hotel Stay (close relatives & friends from other cities), Transport (if any), DOWRY (Yeah still Exists although illegal), Gold (for Bride & Bridegroom - Of course this has been accumulated by parents depending on the region). In different states in India, there are other traditions for Marriage Expenses. In TN, I have primarily heard expenses are shared while in AP & Telangana it is bored by the Brides Family, I am assuming it is almost the case in some of the other states in India. If this is to be considered the Cost Analysis will Change. May be a separate calculator on your website for Marriage with all these factors needs to build. What should it be called maybe Marriage Expenses or SIP with options of sharing or no Sharing?🤔

There are so many incidents like these. Being aware of this. In 2019, We had register Marriage, to save money and invest same in education. Many people liked our decision. But sm people laughed at us. Sarcastically tried to harm our self respect. Inspite of that i am proud of my decision. I didnt sell our agriculture land, i used saved money for education. And now i am earning sound money. And soon with my dedication, i will be a great architect.

In inida most of the expenses are forced by Bridegroom side on Bride. When a girl is born, starting from day one, parents will start thinking about savings for her marriage... One end government is promoting "Beti Bachao Beti Padao", still middle class families think of providing higher education as they may not match a guy for the girl, as highly qualified guy comes with extra cost (Dowry and extra demands).

What I feel is that wedding industry is not at all regulated. There's no body/ association that would govern the prices. And people end up paying way more than what is offered by the sellers/ hall owners. And they try to exploit the emotional qoutient attached to weddings. And people think "Ek hi baar to hoti hai shaadi". Instagram and celebrity weddings have made it difficult for middle class.

You missed 1 major point Dowry All these money coming from bride side, bride's father takes heavy loan and spend. Due to this dowry culture, indians wedding are lavish and big fat. Once dowry will be reduced, money spending will be reduced in indian weddings. So, teach youngsters and avoid Dowry.

Rachana, the real reason is India is a country where people want to showcase their money but in real they are not rich. Showcase people we have and nothing else and also this culture is just because lot of people are poor here and if someone gets rich then he shows his money everywhere, this is not the case in Western countries where almost all are equal in money

Yes its thought provoking talk. Much informative and came to know how big business the Indian marriage is. Of course it depends on spender what amount to spend and as seen from family court divorces statics , marriage is gamble. Even in some other Indian community the dowry is also a big amount which you forgot to include in video. Just for calculation purpose asking how much 20 lakhs would be after 20 years if put @ 12% CAGR in to capital market or mutual fund or bank fixed deposit etc.

Of course, the ideal option was to plan long back with the smallest amount as your shared but what if someone has missed doing it and now need to arrange funds without taking loans preferably.
