I built my beds using at least 1 foot of mulch, which has created some wonderful soil over time. The beds also sank down quite nicely over time.

It's nice to have beautiful blooms but to me, I always prefer winter pruning. For me this is when you can generally see the branches the best and not be distracted by the foliage. The second and most important reason is to avoid borer insects getting into that freshly cut wood. Over time they can kill the entire tree/shrub. I regularly sacrifice some blooms to get my forsythia, smokebush, redbuds, and viburnums into shape and staying healthy. If you do a little every year then you should still have plenty of blooms every year, since you will never need a drastic pruning.

@@mmsanrio We get plenty of rain, but the most rain in spring and insects are already out by then and everything is actively growing . By late April it's already very warm so this is what works best. In fact I think our climate is very similar to Jim's.

You just said what I have been thinking! Watering. After loosing several shade producing limbs, and lack of rain, I am slowly replacing my water hogging Hostas with Sedum.

We use soil amendment/conditioner as mulch. It’s easier to walk on, looks smoother because it’s all a consistent shape/size, and doesn’t get riddled with termites like the larger barks and wood chips. It also breaks down easier.

I have a wicked annual grass that invades my flower beds. Your mention of seed banks has made me want to go out tomorrow and buy several bags of mulch to put a cap on it. Thanks for the good info!

Great video! Figured I'd be bored by the common topics but somehow you manage keep the basics interesting over and over again. This will be my go to video to show friends how to garden in Oklahoma. I’d enjoy hearing more about crossing branches & the plants you’re addressing that with. Serviceberry is one I prune for crossing branches. Would Japanese maples & tree form shrubs need that kind of pruning as well? Just recently found decorative pine bark mulch. I appreciate how it doesn’t wash like the woody dyed material.

Interesting as always. I've been putting off trimming my huge forsythia. It only had a couple of blooms in the spring but many in the fall. It needs a major overhaul and I'm thinking it's going to happen at some point this spring with at least removing the dead branches. Since its seasons are mixed up anyway I may go ahead and do a rejuvenation trim this year.

Great video, Jim! Pruning is definitely my area of ignorance in the garden, especially when talking hydrangeas! My helpful husband decided to prune my hydrangea late last fall for me. Well, needless to say, we went this entire year with no blooms. He has since been educated. 😡

jim can you do a video about crabapples and dwarf apples... I have one each and I seem to be getting these dark brown dots all on the leaves and from looking at photos it looks most like apple scab. Im reading that spraying with a copper spray can help but my trees are right next to my vegetable food garden so probably I cant spray most things on these 2 apple trees... what should I do?

It's been decent weather to do some winter pruning in North Florida, 9B. Question...I have a first year coreopsis with a huge rosette at the bottom. It's a mess underneath with leaves that are either dead or full of mildew or fungus. The plant on top is still blooming and looks great. How do I tidy up underneath? How do I encourage airflow under there? It is very dense and those bottom leaves are not getting any sun. Thank you for all you do!

Do you have recommendations on controlling moles? Our yard looks like a minefield where they have popped up and they tunnel into the landscape areas.

I bought 2 mole trap models, that my husband needs to set up. I’ve also heard to put the dead mole back in the hole to keep moles away.

I think I'm being too stingy with my Holly Tone, I'm careful not to over do it because of the issues with too much . I can't afford to add compost every year but I leave the leaves. Maybe I'll be more generous this year.

Random thought off topic to the video did you ever do a follow up on your blueberries and how well they are doing.produving. plus your grape vine on the shed? Debating trying to sneak in some blueberries or java mountain lingon berry into my garden.
