In Scottish folklore, the Big Grey Man of Ben MacDhui (also known as Am Fear Liath Mòr) is rumoured to be a great gray giant who stalks the mist of Scotland's second highest mountain, Ben MacDhui. Sighted and encountered for at least the last 150 years, this eerie entity is associated with the sound of loud footsteps and mysterious feelings of dread. When sighted, descriptions of the mythical Grey Man monster range from spectral to hair-covered. With a long list of reputable witnesses, including mountaineer Professor J. Norman Collie and reincarnationist Joan Grant, it is difficult to dismiss the Grey Man as mere fantasy, with many arguing that a giant -- material or even supernatural -- lives atop Ben MacDhui. Others have spoken of spirits and ghosts, Bigfoot and even aliens. What is certain, is that the Grey Man represents one of the British Isles' most enduring tales of the paranormal.

As a medical team member of mountain rescue for the Highlands I have this to say: never climb alone unless classified as very experienced. Always document what time you leave and when you expect to be home, so alarm can be raised in a timely manner. Make sure you let someone know the route you plan to take, this is crucial in time critical rescues. Always dress appropriately (can’t tell you how many times we’ve rescued tourists in shorts and sandals - not kidding). Be sure to carry equipment and food/water should the weather turn and you find yourself trapped. We rescue you willingly, most of us voluntary, but can’t help the frustration felt by those almost willingly putting themselves in danger. The Gorms are notoriously known for sudden weather and condition changes. Be sensible and follow these simple rules, and hopefully I won’t be seeing you anytime soon. * Please note, that there are times where conditions make it unsafe for us to initiate a rescue. It’s a terrible feeling every time, it stays with us, so please please don’t do that to us. We’re there to rescue, and when we can’t, it’s the worst feeling in the world.

Great advice, I often climb alone just due to no partners available but i always pack/plan on breaking my ankle and being stuck out there on a summit for days even in summer. Always pack with heavy insulated jacket multiple hats gloves extra h2o etc and redundant lights 3x even on day hikes and climb x. I too see so many hikers and climbers here in the NE USA wearing running shoes, sneakers etc on rocks, mud even ice and black ice and wonder wtf is wrong w these people. Usually I pass them in the way up and then back down and they look me over and say “wish I were you today” lol. Also I’ve taken to wearing a climbing helmet too it’s super light and barely know it’s there but I’ve taken enough backwards slips descending boulders and smooth rock and mud to know it’s not worth a broken skull and subdural hematoma . Walking sticks also help prevent falls and slips very often too. Great advice and comment !❤

@@user-nw2si7hu3u the helmets are great. But so few use them here. They think the Cairngorms and Nevis Range to be ‘light walks on a summer’s day’ until they take one wrong turn off the trail, get lost, many take falls. The worst is the body retrieval. Where we haven’t found them in time. Too many of those. You sound super sensible and thanks for confirming that many traverse these mountains with truly abysmal clothing and footwear. It may be 25°C at the base, is most certainly isn’t at the summit or closer you get to it. The military practice here, Everest climbers practice here. That backpack full of things you don’t think you’ll ever need might just be the difference between life and death up there. It’s not an inconvenience, it’s a must.

Wonderful story, well told, with many facts and much information. A story I know:: A good friend of mine was raised on a farm on a large mountain by his grandfather. When he was young and started chopping wood, he noticed one day a large hairy human looking thing watching him several hundred yards out. Over the days, it gradually got closer and closer, one day it came within 100 feet. He ran and told his grandfather about it, his grandfather said, "That's just Bert, he's harmless. He asked, "Why did you call it Bert?" He said, "We had to call it something!"

Can I say that this was great thank you!! ... I had a similar experience tho it was not a Grey man that haunted me and my friend in Belfast specifically on top of the Cave Hill, inside the country park. We went up at around 5AM it was terrible weather and the clouds lay low over the hills, we walked to the bottom of the mountain and seen how bad it was but decided to walk up anyway. As we walked up the gravel paths and got to the plateau of the mountain, we could hear what could only be described at horses running on gravel or stones and lots of marching feet. Not just that but we would hear the whistles in the background and the marching stopping with the horses still snaring in the mist we could literally hear crowds of people not far from us talking as if in whispers. The sounds were eerie as we stood everything became so still and quiet, now keep in mind usually when it's misty like that sound doesn't travel as far or it would seem so but this was deafening silence, we heard the 3 whistles again and the marching and running of horses, we honestly believed it was some sort of reenactment taking place. We went and stood on the Napolians nose a part of the mountain and the mist over an hour and a half dissipated and well, you can guess yourself.... There was nobody on the mountain. Nobody and no thing, no horses nearby, except a few cows which were over the hill. To this day I still can't explain it. By the way, when I commented on your Hat Man video, well the weird thing is, he was talking to me about something that had actually taken place on that mountain nearly 200 odd years ago. Yeah let that sink in, I was not joking when I asked those questions on the Hat man video. I must add, as we made our way off the mountain I became very sick, I was obviously packing the flu I don't know was I having fever hallucinations or what because I was a bit warm up there. The only thing that makes me think it was not mere hallucinations is the fact my friend also heard the same things as I did when I did. Make of this what you will, I don't have a scoobydoo.

As a Gaelic speaker who lives by the Cairngorms, thank you for not butchering the pronunciation. 👍 (also lived here all my life and have never heard of this ‘Grey Man’, so super interesting!!) Brocken Spectres are often seen. Worth remembering that hypothermia causes vivid hallucinations, visual and auditory, and heightened sense of anxiety. We also get a lot of ventricular clouds, that really look like ‘flying saucers’, caused by warm air, meeting cold air. See them all the time here. That might explain the UFO belief. I’m not a naysayer or skeptic, just like to rule out natural causes before I conclude paranormal. Tapadh leat.

I agree, my ex is a experiences hiker and a geologist. We never left without proper clothing, food, water and a compass. We always left details with his mother as to our route on the hills and later he purchased a watch with a neacon installed. We only ever came across one mishap. Strangely on bleak Lowe. Mist crept in so fast, and panic ensued on our group, thankfully we had our dogs with us and a compass. Our dogs located our lost member whilst I kept everyone calm. Some even said they felt a strange feeling of threat. But we were safe and kept our heads. It's always good to be prepared. I've also passed people climbing hills and valleys wearing trainers, shorts etc, carrying plastic bags with beer in. I can almost hear my own eys roll!

I'm sure all of the sightings and experiences are due to an overdose of Burts Bees or perhaps high-sugar energy bars, that mist and fog is also intoxicating. Better to huddle in your auto at the parking lot, just to stay on the safe side.

It’s a long stretch, but ironically in the US, in South Carolina, on an island 20 miles south of Myrtle Beach called Pawleys Island there’s a specter Called “the Grey Man” who is seen walking on the beaches carrying an old fashioned lantern and if he is seen it’s said to be a warning of a Hurricane to come. And believe it or not his sighting albeit however few, have indeed been prior to hurricanes. My family used to own a house on the island and my Uncle lives in the area and owns a company called “Grey Man climate control” there are books that have been written about this topic and who he may have been and why he appears to who and when. Personally I haven’t ever seen the event, but had I, the first thing I’d do is batten down the hatches! If you feel compelled, definitely look it up. It’s far less terrifying than this Grey Man, but still quite interesting. Thanks Laura! You always bring the closest thing to absolute truth that can be found. And I for one am not going to climb that particular mountain anytime soon! 😳

- - I have experienced such levels of fear before. I awoke one night for what I thought was no reason, lying in my bed, on my stomach with my head turned to my left. But I had a feeling that someone else was in my room. I just "KNEW" that someone was in there with me, and assumed it was my father since I was living with my parents, just the two of them and I. So trying to be slick, all at once I turned my head to my right but slightly down the length of my body and a let out a sudden 'BOO!" as to give him a jump. Well let me tell you.. there SURE WAS a JUMP involved!!! - - When I turn my head back and to the right I expected to see my Dad standing in my room.... instead I saw A BLACK SHADOW BEING!!! And as I turn and said 'Boo!' the Shadow being ACTUALLY GOT SCARED!!! It seemed to take a deep breath in and just DISAPPEARED!!!! But in that instant that it took it's deep breath in and had a jump scare I felt the MOST OVERWHELMING, OVERPOWERING FEELING OF DREAD FEAR AND HORROR ALL AT ONCE!!!! I started to scream, and kicking my legs as to get away from it as my heart started 1000 beats per second as the adrenaline coursed through my body and the primal parts opf my (still 1/2 sleeping) brain went into action and decided on the live-or-die reaction of 'fight or flight'!! - - Mind you this all took place in about ONE SECOND! I didn't have time to process everything that just happened, but SOMEHOW I DID!! I KNEW EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED, WHO THAT SHADOW BEING WAS, AND WHY THEY WERE WATCHING ME!!! All within that second of time and the split second I saw AND FELT that Being and had it's emotions of fear run through my whole body, I knew who it was... it was my brother. My younger brother who passed away about 10 years earlier not just in the house I was in, but in the very same bed I was sleeping on and under the very cover I was staying warm with. (there just wasn't any other bed for me to sleep on since I had moved back into the house within the past year) - - So there I was, legs kicking franticly, lungs screaming multiple "AHH! ... AHH!! ... AHH! ... AHH!! ..." and my arms helping to push myself backwards, as far away from that 'solid static shadow' that had since completely disappeared, and SOMEHOW I processed all that just happened and that I was in ZERO DANGER and I stopped flopping around in my bed like I was Miss Muffet on her spider laden tuffet! But then I instantly starting apologizing... say I was sorry, and that I didn't mean to scare him. That I didn't realize what was happening and I thought it was Daddy in my room... And if I had known it was him I wouldn't have tried to scare him. .. again and again "I'm sorry! I'm so sorry!" tear starting to stream down my cheeks... - - - Now I could go on with this story, explaining the other experiences I've had of my brother verifying he's still here (yes, I am still living in the same home.. but I'm in a different room and bed, but I still and use have the same big heavy blanket) and that to this day I get Signs & Signals that he's still with me.... but there are times that I wonder if it's actually him and not someone/something else, either pretending to be him and hiding their true evil intentions and their true self, OR I'm mistaking sounds, coincidences, and intuitions of someone else for my brother... bu7t I doubt it's the latter. - BUT I actually started this 'book' of a comment to say that I know what that feeling overwhelming fear is like.. even if it was just for a split second. But in that moment you really are overpowered with you primal responses to what amounts to just PURE FEAR!! Not scared, or afraid.... but the most powerful emotion of horror for what in hindsight is just a fear of nothing specific - JUST FEAR ITSELF! It impossible to put into words... like explaining Love.. there just are no words for it... And for the people in these stories to just RUN FOR THEIR LIVES, that is the ABSOLUTELY JUSTIFIED EXACT RESPONSE. Running for 4 or 5 miles??? I can't believe he stopped so soon? LOL - Have any of YOU experienced this LEVEL OF FEAR in your life?? How did YOU Respond???

Hello dear Laura, I’m so happy to see you release this video. It is an interesting phenomenon. The grey man specter, accompanied by intense feelings of dread and terror is one I have never heard of before. If there are magnetic anomalies in that area, I suppose it is not beyond belief that there is a connection between this and the phenomenon. But the range of reported experiences make me lean towards a psychological connection. The footsteps following a person, but no prints found, the sounds of horses, people speaking and rocks being moved all border more in the realm of the supernatural. Visual descriptions of giants, wraiths, and shadow creatures are all triggering the fight or flight response of the experiencer. Could there be a natural gas venting in the region that could incite audiovisual hallucinations? The lack of similar phenomena in other mountains of the area is a strong indicator that this is something isolated to Ben Macdhui. To be frank, I’m stumped. I applaud you for bringing this mystery to light. It’s definitely a head shaker. Thank you so much for sharing with us. I know it’s a lot of hard work and I appreciate it immensely. Blessings from Arkansas, USA, Brenda P❤

Interesting video as usual Laura, with your production values being a level above most other paranormal youtube channels. The Big Grey Man of Ben MacDhui is probably the single weirdest of the many hairy wildmen that feature prominently in British folklore, and are often called the UK's equivalents of Bigfoot. I am familiar with Andy Roberts' work on the Big Grey Man, having watched his lecture about the topic from the Weird Weekend that can be found on the Centre for Fortean Zoology's youtube channel, as well as the articles written by cryptozoologist Karl Shuker on his blog.

Props for this episode regarding the Grey Man. This is an interesting entity due to the sightings being from experienced mountain climbers and outdoors people, due to the location of the Grey Man. I had first read of this entity in a Colin Wilson book. Props for doing something less known, instead of other channels which endlessly rehash "alien" sightings, completely brainwashing the public by not talking about the *huge* number of "alien" phenomena that indicate a likely paranormal (not extraterrestrial) origin. Taking a broader look at different, lesser known entities, instead of just releasing content that forces viewers to think in binary terms shows your channels class. The only way we can learn about entities is by keeping an open mind, and not falling into the trap of trying to rigidly classify these beings. Because as John Keel has shown, these beings often will play mind games with us, and the last thing humans need is to fall into a feedback loop, only learning what information (true or not) these beings choose to feed us, based on our assumptions. That way madness lies.

He sounds a bit like the 'Brockengespenst' (Brocken ghost) or 'Rübezahl' from the Harz region in Germany. Also a huge figure which can appear to travellers in the mountainous region (the Harz in this case) and can be quite scary. EDIT: I see you have mentioned the Brocken spectre or ghost after I made the comment.

The problem i shave with this type of thing is that after someone says they have encountered something like this then others who have heard the story will then jump to that as the first conclusion if they see or hear something they do not recognise.

This girl is young and pretty but you never see her wearing revealing clothing or showing off. She must be very confident and secure. Most women on youtube wear low cut outfits at the very least. Good to see a girl that doesn't see the need to do that.

This *woman* isn’t any more secure or insecure than any other woman. Women don’t wear “revealing” clothes because they are insecure. Not everything women do is about getting male validation. A lot of the times, women do things just because _they_ want to.

I’m what I like to call an “open minded skeptic.” I have a degree in biological sciences and am a very logical and analytical person who puts my faith in empirical evidence and data to make any kind of hypothesis or conclusion. But I’m also not adverse to the possibility of unknown realities that are yet to be understood by science. I forget who said this, but it says something like “magic is just science we don’t understand yet.” Or something along those lines. If someone from the 18 th century were to see a smartphone, they’d undoubtedly think it was magical or sorcery, only because they have no concept of technology and the scientific advances of the centuries ahead. Cryptids are fascinating to me, though I have a substantial amount of skepticism about their actual existence. The potential existence of multiple dimensions and the possibility of extraterrestrial life capable of interstellar or intergalactic travel is another fascinating concept that I would love to experience myself. The universe is a vast, complex, and very old expanse that we have just barely begun to comprehend and explore. The possibilities of unknown creatures on earth, and from other worlds are definitely scientifically possible and plausible. I have no personal experience with paranormal phenomena, but would love to.

If it isn't natural (which it very well could be) I think it could be a Faery creature (which is my own personal belief). The Fairies of Celtic legend and mythology aren't all small things, they can come in a variety of sizes so its possible in my opinion that the Grey Man is something from the world of Faery.

I think your usage of the term 'mountaneer' / 'mountaineering' is a bit unfortunate in the context of Ben MacDhui. I checked it and it only consists of gentle grassy slopes, more like a hill than a genuine mountain, really. 'Mountaineering' is reserved for very technical routes, either involving rock climbing (and therefore the use of ropes for belaying and other safety gear) or scaling a (usually in an alpine range, prominent, tall) mountain in harsh winter conditions (using crampons, ice axe, and often times also guide ropes). Ben Nevis, despite its equally unremarkable height, at least has some cliffs in its NE flank. People described in the video were simple hikers, traversing a marked hiking trail. Otherwise a nice interesting story, although I think they may have been haunted by a curious _Heilan coo_ 😂 The mist did the rest.
