India's Far East Policy Significance: 1. This is the first region-specific line of credit that India has extended to any country. 2. Russia's the Far East is resource-rich. Its size is 3 to 4 times that of India. The population is only 6-7 million. Sparsely populated. 3. Last 10-15 years, the Russian govt is trying to develop these regions with many attractive policies to give a boost to the Russian economy. 4. Russia is trying to use this region to improve its standing in the Asia Pacific. It is also located in the Indo Pacific region or the North Pacific, adjoining Japan, USA, China, Mongolia, North Korea and Kazakhstan. Geostrategic significance. 5. India's support announcement brings the focus to the Indo-Russia relations. 6. India can now play a bigger role in the region. 7. China's presence is already dominant in the region and Russia now wants to diversify its partnership. 8. Geo-political and Geo-economic interests of Russia. 9. Now more Indian investment in the Russian far east which will lead to more trade. 10. Diversify and deepen India's energy security. 11. Risk-taking appetite- now India is moving into exploration. India-Russia: 1. Trade- $12-13 billion. Languishing trade. The aim is $30 billion by 2030. 2. Cross investments have picked up and the target set for 2025 has been achieved. 3. Economic cooperation should be the aim of relations and move beyond the military. 4. Shipping line between Vladivostok and Chennai. 5. India has been source oil from the Sakhalin oil fields for the last 2 decades. 6. Skilled manpower- Indian labour and skilled people will have opportunities in far-east Russia. 7. With increased investments, India's profile in the region will increase. And countries like China, Japan, Vietnam and ASEAN will look at India positively. 8. Joint statement talks of liking the Asia Pacific with Eurasia. North-South corridor. Access to the Arctic. Areas of engagement: Agriculture; Diamond processing; Coal from far east- Tata Power has invested in the coal mine in the far east. Criticism: 1. Impact of sanctions 2. In the past line of credit has been given to Russia from bank to bank but the interest rate was a bone of contention. Way forward: 1. Overcome hesitation. 2. Make economic partnership a strong pillar of the bilateral relationship.

2 small edits: in point 2 its actually only twice as big as india and not 3-4 times, india is 3. 1 million sq meter and east russia is 6 million sq meter in which 8 million people reside 2)india russia bilateral trade is 9 billion and not 12-14 billion, rest all is fine amd greatly compiled
@r.g82245 жыл бұрын
India-Russia wants their bilateral trade thrice by 2025 not by 2030...except it u summarise very well.

She is so lively and active despite having bad throat. People are unnecessarily being quirky about this anchor or that anchor, not realizing how adversely it impacts the morale of the anchors in the question. So, guys please be mindful of your actions which might inadvertently be hurting the genuine anchors in spite of doing fairly decent job. BTW, I'm for anyone as long as he/she is able to extract something meaningful out of the participating experts and present it to us. Anyway, Thanks a lot, ma'am!

More than with Russia ,I feel this engagement would boost our interests and ties with ASEAN countries, especially those are in a kind of conflict with China. A regular transaction of business in Indian Ocean region including South China sea would benefit India. However,let's wait and analyse the results

What I feel,its very early to calculate all the repurcussions including India's investments in a country under sanction. It's not all about international relationship,its simply ability of India to benefit as much as it could be possible.

Unfortunately the melting of ice caps has turn into boon for Russia, now the ports located at far east region of Russia is operative for entire year , earlier which was operative for just 6-8 months. Russia has been always a great partner with India and there is a sort of understanding between these two nation. The India's engagement in far east region will strengthen ties with Russia. Certainly Russia too needed India's involvement to create a balance as China has already dominated this region when it comes to investment. India and Russia are always seen as a defence partner, but the investment of India to this region will take relation to another level as India aims to triple its trade relation by 2025. So, it can be said that it is the win win situation for both friendly nation and they should go forward to make it possible.
