I was watching the subbed Yu-Gi-Oh GX anime a few months back, and the website I was using was missing a few episodes. I went to search for the subbed anime in other websites, and Crunchyroll was the ONLY place that I was able to find the subbed version, and oh boy, those were the longest 3-4 episodes I have ever watched from a single anime. There were at least 6 ads before the episode began and another 6 at the middle. By god, 12 fricking ads in a single episode, not to mention that in the first of those that I watched, the subtitles had a 2 or 3 second delay. Suffice to say, I'm never using Crunchyroll ever again, unless I'm VERY desperate.

I've been thinking of getting rid of my crunchyroll for a while since I had my suspicions about them. (Namely, I was starting to question how much my money goes to support lesser-known titles like Iruma-Kun and if my subscription REALLY went to anyone) and this video helped me make up my mind. I'm disgusted by how much they underpay translators as well. Thank you so much for making a great, informative video. 👍
@bina75133 жыл бұрын
I definitely find this informative. I was not aware of Crunchyroll's past and what stemmed from. I will say, I never used Crunchyroll because I prefer dub over sub (with English subtitles). The reason being is that I am a multitasker and I have problems with sensory processing issues that stem from my autism and ADHD. You could say "the sky is blue" and I my brain would translate that into "the shoe flew" because my brain is pretty much Windows ME (in that my brain failing to process something is akin to Windows ME crashing - it happens all the time and it frustrates me and people around me that it constantly happens). However, that explains only the English subtitles, which I even try to have on even original English language shows that I watch (shows like _"The Blacklist," _"Criminal Minds," _"Perception"_ and _"NCIS."_ I only watch those shows because they're something that my mom watches and I watch it to spend time with her). The English dub preference is attributed to my ADHD and multitasking. However, if there is no way to watch a dub, I will watch the English sub and be fine doing so (just missing out on things here and there because of my multitasking, ADHD, and the Japanese spoken dialog confusing my brain a tiny bit (to which I just shrug my shoulders to and carry on)). Back on topic, I do hope Crunchyroll one day does make effort to truly help the underpaid staff that put in so much hard work into anime. It's unfortunate that the world we inhabit has people who put so much hard work into things like anime and video games (especially looking at you EA and Ubisoft) and not get a salary that can barely feed a one person, perhaps a small, two to four-person family if they're lucky. However, I will, boycotting won't help these people because that's even less money to trickle down to those who are underpaid in the anime and video game industries (just to name a few industries). And less money also means layoffs, so these underpaid workers could lose their jobs as they are usually the first to go. At the same time, there are also things so atrocious that the higher ups do (looking at you again Ubisoft) that are so bad that it makes one sick to even purchase anything. All I will say is, boycotting is hypocritical in that even companies like Nestlé (one of the most hated companies ever worldwide) have done abhorrent atrocities (like pumping 200 gallons of freshwater out of Flint, Michigan that the residents needed most during the Flint Michigan water crisis, which is the crisis that killed 12 people and hospitalized 87 people, caused children a ton of biological problems (I.e. hair loss, formation of skin lessions, blindness from taking baths, etc.). Unfortunately, at the same time, we all need water and Nestlé owns pretty much all the world's water one way or another (through the main companies and subsidiaries and maybe via water bills that people pay). So either way, one can't say "just boycott them," because there are some companies that just can't be boycotted unless oneself wants to die of thirst or starvation. And boycotting can cause innocent people to lose their jobs, thus potentially making those people at risk of thirst and starvation, especially if that was the only job that would hire them. Needless to say, hypocrisy is unfortunately inevitable and it is important to be aware of it and be able to acknowledge when it could cause a problem in making arguments. However, I will say even hypocrites can have a point, just like how jerkasses can have a point (TvTropes reference, but it is true). These things are just super messy and makes doing the morally right thing, and much more knowing what is the morally right response, very, very, very difficult.

Glad you talked about legal options that are better than crunchyroll, because when the argument is "and therefore you should watch it illegally" results in no legal options working to be better and possibly resulting in lower legal availability. I know pennies on the dollar support is not much to work with, but it's more favorable than the 1 dvd sale that was made to make the fansub, so it's a lose lose.

The new beta completely lacks seasonal anime list and the schedules. It went for this awful endless list system that Netflix does which doesn't exactly work for anime. There is also no calendar to see any upcoming shows. You basically have to guess when a show airs and even then, it doesn't show in the beta version of CR. That 10 year old design actually works pretty well and now, we are forced to move to the beta in a week or so.

This is why the best way to support studios and animators you like is to just buy the blu rays. Most of it goes directly into their pocket and you get something physical out of it. 7:30 the very fact that they are doing it legally is the real only strength needed. Having a chance for money to reach the animators beats nothing at all. Crunchyroll can't really control what the distributors do with the money, but the very fact that the money goes to the people who own the rights is enough justification to use it. It would be great for crunchyroll to donate to anime dormitory, but charity isn't a requirement, that is what makes it charity. They could pay their translators more, but that doesn't justify illegally watching the shows.

The new desktop site is fine, but the roku app is still horrendous. It took months to even be semi-usable after the update to the new look, and to this day I constantly have to quit out when it freezes and try again. The way they organize dubs as seasons is also infuriating, especially because it is a massive pain to get back to the language you actually want on the app (start playing the wrong episode, hit back at the right time to get to the episode list, and wait for the season names to slowly scroll across to where you can see which actual season and language it is).
