Gabe is autistic and nonspeaking! It is typical for him to walk right by the Christmas tree on Christmas morning. For the first time Gabe sat and opened every present in one sitting! It normally takes us days or weeks!
Merry Christmas! #fortheloveofgabe

@@balthasardenner5216 there’s actually a lady who is autistic. She’s in her 20’s, nonverbal and is a very famous author :) she has written a few books so far, and is incredible with her words. I’m not exactly sure how to explain it . I could read and write before I could vocally say my words.

So wonderful to hear your perspective. My son is 6 and semi verbal. I also appreciate when people talk to him like a kindergartner and not a baby. Maybe he’ll be fully verbal some day, maybe not (that’s okay, too) but he’s still a “big boy” and deserves to be treated like one. ❤

@@googleuser4530 could be a variety of things. Some people are physically unable. Sometimes it's neurological (like apraxia of speech). Sometimes it's developmental, though it can be hard to tell how much non-verbal people have going on in their minds if they can't express themselves. There are also disorders like selective mutism but even then they want to speak, they just are blocked. There are some people who prefer using technology rather than speech for communication but in this case they can speak but prefer not to. Non-verbal generally means unable to speak (or with very limited speech/verbal language capacity).

First, let me say thank-you to the parents for the amazing job you do. This is 24/7. I also have autism and was diagnosed at 45. I’m now a nurse and therapist. In the 70s and 80s, there was no such support or even diagnosis for what is formally known as aspergers and ADHD. My parents did an amazing job with me emotional outbursts and meltdowns. I once had to correct a lecturer that nonverbal autism does not mean low intelligence! I also pointed out that everyone on the spectrum is a human being and should be regarded as such. Thank-you for sharing moments like these with us ❤❤❤❤

Hi Sherry, I’m 48 and know what you mean. My parents took me to be evaluated in the 70’s and they were told 1) I was a girl so I couldn’t have ADD (no H back then yet) … and 2) I spoke so I couldn’t be on the spectrum. Even though my main form of communication was drawing, because I spoke at home (never in public though) I was ruled out. It’s great that things have advanced to where they are now. My son is on the spectrum and had selective mutism but with countless hours of therapy since the age of 4 (he’s 13 now) he has made huge progress. They didn’t offer anything close to what they do now when we were kids. I just stumbled upon this video and I fell in love with this momma and Gabe. You can literally feel the love and support in this short clip! Happy New Year!

I was diagnosed with ADHD and Aspergers at a young age. I guess my aunt is who noticed it then doc appointments. I use to have melt downs and always been limited on friends. So my school days I was mostly a loner cuz I was weird and different to everyone and would just ignore mem or shrug me off. So I'd assume I was disliked and sat alone quietly allot unless had a group alike to me to chill with otherwise.. :/ Only my Junior and Senior years of high school I slowly started to make friends but still often was alone at lunch and after school. Only had 1 real relationship during school days. Which was just a part of my Senior year.. Mostly just got more a bit more mature by my last 1 and 2 years and was able to talk to just few more people maybe. I'm not good socializing with people unless there is a focused topic and someone that ain't annoyed of rambles. Otherwise I just alone. I even won't go to anime cons or big things alone even when my sister was going as she hated me being around even with my anxieties to be alone. I just know if I were ever single and to try and get out there.. I'd have to have legal rights to bring a companion pet even larger places like cons, not be charged to fly or travel with my cats. (my choice of self trained companion are my cats over my dogs. 1 Gets anxieties himself while younger is just a hyper bean that's not had chance to meet as many dogs to know how to interact calmly and quietly or not at all. I can stay calmer with my cats and stress easily with dogs. It also helps me interact with others more and feel more special cuz I'm able to train cats to handle going almost anywhere with me that I can bring them.) Sometimes feel like my only good life skills is art and training cats and nothing else extra special other than maybe good with kids but ain't a parent yet.

@@RunninUpThatHillh Sounds like being reminded there's two mothers upsets you. and for the record, any parent who is putting their minor (especially disabled) child onto the internet to make money off of their kids for "awareness" aren't really that great of parents. Children are entitled to privacy. Children are entitled to not having their lives put onto the internet for strangers to see. That goes especially double for children who cannot understand the implications and realities of putting your life out onto the internet.

The autism spectrum is so vast. My husbands son is a high functioning autistic young man of 26 years old. He is amazing and also non verbal. He is very intelligent just like your young boy. He is unsure of people he doesn’t know, understandably, but once he gets to know you he opens up a bit. He can feed himself, dress himself, brushes teeth he even cooks the easy stuff when under supervision, plus many other important duties including cleaning his room (somewhat) and loves to do puzzles. Oh, and he laughs and smiles as well. There is nothing more beautiful than that emotional connection and those hard to form feelings coming out in the personality that makes these kids who they are during their lifetimes. I am truly honored to be a part of that development and his life. I enjoy every moment.

My 20 yr old son is verbal but had trouble with speech until he was 10. He's had challenges but Ive always worked hard (and still do)in teaching him how to be as independent as possible. He can cook simple meals and do small chores at home. It hasnt always been easy, but he's come a long way. He graduated high school in 2020 but is still there learning job skills. He works a couple hrs each day in the cafeteria. He may not be able to fully be on his own, but I've always taught him that there's nothing he can't do as long as he tries. I couldn't be more proud. And he still believes in Santa. :)

but dressing themselves, cooking, cleaning teeth and cleaning in general are basic things, why would that be worth mentioning or why wouldnt he be able to do something like that? also a lot of autistic people have no problem with such basics at all, in fact not doing them would make them feel bad which just makes sense in general

Talking about autism and stairs: At home I only walk up the stairs like normal people when I'm trying to be quiet when going to bed while my parents are already in bed or when I am carying something big or heavy. But in any other case I will run up our 12 step stairs only placing my feet on the even steps (2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 aka the floor).

That made me cry. How beautiful. Everyone is on Earth for a reason. This young man brought me so much joy. Is his name Gabriel? If so, cool. That's my father's name. 💙 Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. 😊

At Christmas, when my autistic daughter was 5, my neighbor made her a Raggedy Anne doll. It was gorgeous! When my daughter opened it she said, "I already have one of those"...and she did already have a doll but not a beautiful handmade doll.

Thank you for sharing this. Although I am a retired nurse in all my years in practice I never met anyone with autism. This little window of what your life is like as the mother of an autistic child is a learning experience and an eye opener. Thank you!

Merry Christmas. My.14 yr old is autistic and has cerebral palsy. When he was.2 we took him to neurologist to have him "diagnosed " officially. As he was sitting in the room with my oldest son who was 19 at the time they were just chatting away to each other. The doctor walks in with the file open. Never looks at him. Starts asking me questions. One of his first was does he talk. The kid is rattling away 5 feet from him. So i told him getting him to talk isn't the chore, getting him to shut up is. He did a bunch of reading and looking at mri scans. Never looked or talked to him. Just agreed with our doctors diagnosis and ask us to set up reoccurring appointments with his clinic. We went 4 or 5 times. The idea was great. All the doctors and specialists we needed in one place. You get a room and you and the child stay there and the medical ppl move from room to room. But it literally took hours in 8×8 room. No windows, no food other than of small snacks without leaving a crumbs or any mess, limited liquids and try to limit toys. Many of the specialists were great but that neurologist never really dealt with him much. And after the first visit if one of my other sons, who were teenagers or younger, was there or Daddy was there he would talk to them not me. They, including Daddy, would redirect him back to me because i was/am primary caregiver and "his person" . But you could tell the dr. was uncomfortable talking to me. I ended up speaking to other moms who said he was the same way with them and their kiddos. But he was the only pediatric neurologist within the lower half of our state. We finally decided we couldn't deal with him anymore and now have to drive almost 2 hours one way to see a neurologist and she is not familiar with whats available down here to order things. So she has to call our family doctor and send information to them so they can try to find what she is requesting around here. It seems impossible sometimes. I dont get it. With there being so many more kids and adults getting diagnosed why is it so hard to find a doctor to help. And why only neurologists. There needs to be a doctor who just deals with our kids. Instead of having to wait 6 months or longer for visits. Sorry ranting. Thank you for letting me rant.

Sensation overload for a minute there. My son is autistic. Not at this stage, but he gets sensation overload. Even opening gifts is different and out of the ordinary things are hard to process. You want to take him out of routine to celebrate Christmas but routine is key. It’s a hard place to be for you. Balancing act.
