Fantastic interview! Big show is so damn smart. He's perfect for teaching the younger generation the tricks of the trade. Psychology plays a bigger part than some realize. What Show said about the Becky/Nia situation was so spot on. Becky took that right hand like a champ, and just grinned afterwards, with that close-up shot of her bloody face. That's pro wrestling done right. It felt real. It allows you to suspend your disbelief a bit, and get way more invested in what you're seeing. That's far more important than doing a thousand high spots in a row, without any selling. I find that stuff athletically impressive, but i can't get fully invested without the psychology in there.

The issue with the match booking comes down to Vince. He's just lost it. HHH gets it done in NXT. There's always a mutual respect, each wrestler looks good, and there's a start, middle and ending with the matches in NXT. With Vince there's no build up, too many random squash matches, and no real focus on the actual wrestling.
@nohero1339

I miss the attitude era of wrestling. The wrestlers and their characters for the most part had there place and story lines. Along with the match structure. Back then we had quite a bit of people who were world champ tier and some lower down the pole but it worked. I tended to prefer the lower card characters like the head bangers, Jeff Jarret, Al Snow, Ken Shamrock etc. Now it's hard to tell some newer wrestlers apart from one another. No real gimmicks with a few exceptions. Mostly some fade undercut with beard guy in black tights and kick pads pretty much these days. No one stands out and when they do they are misused or jobbed out to push another nobody

Yes I agree. Not a lot of "standout" guys per say. It's like every time I tune into RAW or SD there's always some new dude on the roster and I'm like damn they need to slow their f'n role in building this character up more then bringing out another Joe Schmoe from NXT.

In the old days the wrestlers understood a bit of psychology with regard to fan reaction . They were trying to create drama and get the people in the building or the tv audience reacting to the angle. Now it's really just a circus with guys flying around and doing physical feats. They're obviously good athletes but the viewer doesn't get invested in the story that led up to the match anymore. It's not as much fun . Honestly I can't sit through an episode now . I probably couldn't name 10 wrestlers from the current promotions. I suppose I'm old 😲

Vicente Guerrero Don’t forget to add that the fans and society weren’t over sensitive babies. The fans now complain that it’s too PG but they got their panties in a bunch when Reigns called Samoa Joe a fat ass and when Alexa “body shamed” Nia Jax. WWE is just adapting to society now, just like they did in the attitude era

The writers actually wrote promos but they gave more freedom and the writers were phenomenal in that era unlike today where they just cater to the marks

Watching on the network even when lines or moves were botches fans didn't care and nitpick, they were always invested which creates for way better viewing. These days if someone messes up people in the arena turn on them and it hurts the viewing

One of my favorite matches of all time, if not the number one itself, is Benoit v Regal at the Pillman Memorial Show. As Show says, today's show is very much just a string of moves, "you do your stuff, I'll do my stuff"; you're expected more to invest in the promos and sketches than the match itself so long as you see the finishers. In contrast, Benoit v Regal (which wasn't televised) was 15 minutes long and builds like nothing else. It starts off slow and steady and the crowd isn't interested, but by the last minutes of the match, everyone is losing their shit, and I don't think there's any kind of promo that was cut for it. They just went out there and did it and it's amazing. It's all over YT if you want to see it, kids.

Big Show couldn't be more Right, it all feels like random BS for a few years now. No Feeling, no Nothing, just stupid Action. The Moment when Goldbergs Music hit for the first time when he returned...it was the first time i had goosebumps in like forever watching wwe. People can hate on Goldberg as much as they want for not having enough diversity in the ring and whatever - him just Standing in the ring doing Nothing gets it over to me more than 95% of the actual locker room in 10 Matches. THAT is what being a Superstar is all About. And I mean c'mon, everyone loves Austin...nobody ever complained About his in ring diversity. Seriously, a regular suplex was a top notch move for him...like the best in his Repertoire. I remember times at the beginning of Goldbergs Career when he came up with a new move like almost every match. But whos left at the Moment...the only one i really like to watch is dolph ziggler, hes got that Special something. And what do they do with him...Nothing. His nice, unique finisher is replaced by...a super kick. The most unspectacular move ever that every 2nd dude does regularily in his Matches not finishing somebody off. Now a stupid heel turn for some time...tbh in my opinion Ziggler will never get over as a bad guy cause he doesn't get a kick ass Image. He should gain some more muscles and get back to a good attitude and he could be one of the biggest stars ever. He's got something everyone else doesnt.

Excellent interview which provides great insight on how much the brand has changed since the attitude era. The differences Big Show pointed out between then and now is why fans from the attitude era such as myself don't support nor keep up with today's WWE. Today's WWE is non competitive with no build up nor structure.

I agree with you I do kind of like rouseys fights simply because she wrestles like back in the 90s not in the way of anything can and will happen but man she takes an ass whooping and gives one, but that's pretty much it but when I do hear about someone like triple h vs. Someone else from back in the day I'll watch it but all this new shit sucks. One thing I am glad about is Jeff hardy came back I just wish they'd do more tlc matches with him and him do crazy shit like he used to but he's getting too old for that look at the match with him and Randy Orton a few months ago hell in a cell match he didn't do much but two things he crashed through a ladder and then injured himself when he fell from the top into a table. He can't really do that kind of stuff anymore and it sucks but that's age for you lol

I'm way late to be commenting but Big Show is just right about this. He's basically listed everything that I miss from the Attitude and Ruthless Aggression eras. I'm not one of these guys that's pissed about the pg rating but I definitely think the build up and the story and even the performances are lack luster these days when compared to the way things used to be. It's easy to live in the "glory days" but it's not even that. I've re-watched so many of the old shows and ppv's on the network and they hold up. They make me remember what I loved.
