About Author: Raymond Thornton Chandler (July 23, 1888 - March 26, 1959) was an American-British novelist and screenwriter. In 1932, at the age of forty-four, Chandler became a detective fiction writer after losing his job as an oil company executive during the Great Depression. His first short story, "Blackmailers Don't Shoot", was published in 1933 in Black Mask, a popular pulp magazine. His first novel, The Big Sleep, was published in 1939. In addition to his short stories, Chandler published seven novels during his lifetime (an eighth, in progress at the time of his death, was completed by Robert B. Parker). All but Playback have been made into motion pictures, some more than once. In the year before his death, he was elected president of the Mystery Writers of America
About the book: The Big Sleep (1939) is a hardboiled crime novel by American-British writer Raymond Chandler, the first to feature the detective Philip Marlowe. It has been adapted for film twice, in 1946 and again in 1978. The story is set in Los Angeles.
The story is noted for its complexity, with characters double-crossing one another and secrets being exposed throughout the narrative. The title is a euphemism for death; the final pages of the book refer to a rumination about "sleeping the big sleep".

Raymond Chandler, more than any writer before or since, has captured the poetry and paltriness that are the heart of Los Angeles, his characters move within the shadow of the Hollywood machine-tough, chauffeurs, dames and the wealthy gone bad. Haunting, flawed, and larger than life. Mr. Chandler I am in you seem to get the attention of people.

Heck, no. Uploader here should _really_ have indicated in the video title that this recording is an audio drama production with full cast, music, and sound effects ... not the full audiobook. (Obviously nobody could never read the book in only ninety minutes; it's nearly 300 pages.)

As a radio dramatisation it's not strictly true to call it a full length audiobook, as people may think it contains the full text of the novel, which it doesn't. Many people like this series with Toby Stephens, but I prefer the earlier BBC dramatisations with Ed Bishop. Nevertheless, this series dramatises a few books that the Ed Bishop series misses.

Toby Stephens American accent is excruciating . As for Marlowe : his relentless wise cracking and Sir Galahad moral rectitude is both tiresome and unconvincing. He s obviously Gay . Time he came out of the closet..!

First, it's not actually an audiobook (even though the video title here uses the words 'full audiobook' for some reason), it's an audio drama -- with cast and music and sound effects. Second, these kinds of productions have to condense things a lot to keep the running time at about ninety minutes. Scenes are jettisoned for time.

@@eduardo_corrochio Yeah. I’d really like an audiobook of the actual text, not some condensed thing.

@@johnpurssey6880 Oh yeah the final film is an abomination, ruined by the Warner brothers interference. Out there is the original film that Hawks shot about 18 months before and it’s a lot closer to the novel. The final cut that Sam Warner forced upon Hawks has scenes filmed 18 months later when both Bacall & Bogey are noticeably older. And it entirely excises the scene with the missing Irishman’s wife. It’s a shame as the original cut is a bonafide classic. But I suppose that the final cut made more money during the mania of “bogey & bacall”…
