I think the Miss Hawaii situation is bigger than just her accepting the title under the given circumstances. Whether people agree or disagree with her actions, I don't know why some people have to resort to online bullying. People can disagree and still show respect and I think that's the bigger issue here. Looking forward to reading through the comments on this one 😅

Its ironic because both Miss and Teen USA resigned from their title due to bullying and other accusations like sexual harrassment and being silenced of their free speech. They both said that the organization is toxic and corrupt. Miss Hawaii knew full well what she was getting into as she said herself she gave it a lot of thought and still chose to do so. The harsh criticisms and even bullying comes with the territory in this very controversial situation. Its not about Miss Hawaii but the toxic environment of that organization. I would not want to represent and support an organization that is toxic.

Well two things. First, why some people are not supporting Savannah. The original Miss USA resigned because she felt like the Miss USA organization had not lived up to it's promises and that the workplace environment was toxic. So I think that by her accepting the position now, Savannah is seen as agreeing with the organization and its treatment of contestants. Even if that's not true, that's the optic. Second, why some people resort to online bullying. The answer to that one is easy: they are "keyboard warriors." It's easy to sit behind your monitor and spew whatever you want, ANONYMOUSLY. If we all somehow had to reveal our real identities (and maybe even pictures) before posting, I'm pretty sure the comments would not be so vile.

As a casual user of IG, some people do post mean comments with a picture (granted, I'm not sure if that's their picture or if their account is public). Maybe one day we'll see our online profiles more closely attached to our actual identities. Would love to see how the comments change then.

I agree with you wholeheartedly, what has happened to the Hawaii I grew up in? To attack this young lady who stepped up to fulfill the vacated position with bullying tactics is not the Hawaii style that makes here so unique that people worldwide envy us. I always feel we should be behind our local people as they strive to compete in anything, be it sports, acting, politics , whatever. THIS IS WHAT HAWAII IS ALL ABOUT. IMUA HAWAII, NO SCARD EM! ❤ L

@@Jose_Jimenez: Hard to say and it really doesn't matter if they were inside or outside of Hawaii. It was conveyed to her. Anytime some one elects or is forced to step down, there are people supporting and those criticizing the replacement. The fact that the original was acting since the crowned Dec 2023. Almost 1/2 year, which is almost 1/2 way. In a workplace, where a new person hired, leaves before the first year, reflects on the organization why someone steps down voluntarily versus forced to like Vannesa Williams. It doesn't the pageant is innocent of what they did or didn't do, nor does it mean that our Miss Hawaii, now Miss America, won't get the same treatment. It is concerning that our Miss America might experience the same conditions as the one stepping down, and by accepting it, she is accepting the risks. There are some choices that really need to have eyes wide open.

If I were this young lady’s advisor, I would have her put out a statement along the lines of: “I am saddened by the previous Miss USA’s situation and experiences with the parent organization. While I support her personal decision to leave the organization, my own perspective is to honor the positive aspects of the Miss USA position and focus on those good things. If, however, I do run into any sexist experiences within the organization, I feel that it would be best to use my position to defeat those negative things from within by using the power of the Miss USA position itself.”

It’s a great statement, but the problem with this new ownership of Miss USA is that _“the power of the Miss USA position itself”_ is silenced and gone - to protect the more sinister characters behind the scenes. Even if Savannah has a great Miss USA experience, the NDA prevents her from speaking to any media sources about anything she experiences while under the org. Silencing her essentially 💔 There is no power other than being a pawn of the owner. But people’s frustrations should definitely be pointed at Laylah Rose Loiczly, *not Savannah* (who Laylah hides behind).

Unfortunately, social media has built a culture of no accountability. People can post whatever they want behind their phone or screen and get away with it. They have no sense of compassion or empathy, just thinking it's "OK" or "ITS JUST A JOKE". What they don't realize, it gives permission for others to do the same.

- First off, you know that there's something wrong with a job that has NO classified documents/intel, and has employees sign Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs). Being a military veteran of close to four decades, I understand the need for information control...although a pageant...really?! There maybe certain controls the public isn't aware of that is essential, although this seems to be more to be silencing them on their treatment...perception. And as people may be giving Ms. Gankiewicz heat for taking the position, as there is a NDA in place, even she doesn't truly know how bad the situation is. - Great timing: Having this happen in the Miss USA community is saddening, but it may be a small blessing for Maui. Savannah Gankiewicz is a Maui-native and can be yet another voice in bringing a positive focus to what's going on in the island as they try to recover from the effects of last year's wildfire. - Social Media: The prevalent dark side of social media are all of the negative comments people sling out there in order to drag down others to a miserable place...WHY?! Plainly said, that's just cruel. If someone wants to feel better about themselves, lift others up as you rise. Having others speak well of us is based on what we do for others, not how we step on each other to make ourselves feel good...that's a form of self-loathing. - Texting: Anything that's heartfelt should not be done on text...nuff said. - For those who are slamming Ms. Gankiewicz on accepting the crown, remember the statement, "If for any reason the new Miss Universe is unable to fulfill her duties, the first runner-up will take her place, good luck to you both"...this is life.

So I left a long-time position many years ago in large part due to what is now labeled a toxic work environment. I didn't really understand how terribly bad it was until I finally found a position in a positive environment. Never did it occur to me to have bad feelings towards the workers I left behind (except the manager who allowed the toxic behavior to continue.) Sometimes you don't figure out what is going on or realize how harmful it is until you are in it for a while. Different folks have a lower or higher tolerance for what they experience in the workplace or they realize how bad it is, but they need the job and the benefits for their families. It is unfortunate that so many, especially on social media, have lost their sense of empathy and civility and that makes for a toxic life environment for everyone.

You're right. Ppl online are messed up, but it's because they can hide behind a screen. Gen Z also has a harder time dealing with mental issues from technology and specifically how social media effects them because they grew up with it being hyped up in culture. They just gotta remember that online isn't real and their real life is more important. Shouldn't let it affect them. Negativity says more about the person giving it than the person who receives it. I hope she knows that we got her back and to turn to others for support. You're right about it is what we do! Whoever it is, my heart goes to them if they're from home. The biggest way to affect change to that organization is for no one to enter the feeder pageants for Miss USA. Fortunately, or unfortunately, news cycles move so quickly now that this story will be forgotten soon. That's why I said the biggest way to make a change is not enter the feeder pageants. Affecting Miss USA (or any group) financially is what often finally gets things to turn around. As for the online bullying, it's easy to sit behind a keyboard and make anonymous threats, but it's also a symptom of a general breakdown in civility that's been happening for a while. More people seem to have such short fuses and are so reactionary.

So glad you covered this! The bullying is horrible 💔 I do understand the frustration with the Miss USA organization though… by assuming the title, Savannah herself is now under the NDA which is likely why we don’t hear much about her experience 😔 I think people were counting on Savannah to make a power move, where she negotiated her taking on the Miss USA role on the grounds that **the NDA in perpetuity is dropped,** for Noelia, for herself, and _all the titleholders to come!_ ✊🏼🔥 It would have been such a power move for women empowerment, because no woman should ever be silenced of her right to speak about her experiences. But yeah, Savannah doesn’t deserve the hate. Someone more sinister is hiding behind her as the public face of the org. Laylah Rose Loiczly needs to own up to her mistakes or leave.

We need a baseline reframe of what conflict means. Conflict for many is something to be avoided or is an opportunity for attack and hence reflex for defensiveness, whether elicited by cultural views or personal experiences. It took a long time for me to understand constructive conflict can be a positive experience and not one that triggers a fight/flight/flee/fawn response...there's gotta be a healthy detachment from the actual conflict. Conflict, when approached productively, and indeed non-personally, can lead to exploration, discovery, and conducive productive change. Granted, we're in institutions that allow for that offering of change to be safely spoken about...without threat of retaliation, stigma of whistleblowing, victim shaming, dismissive gaslighting cause of a culture of complicit pacification misunderstood as "being in aloha." Interpersonal Conflict. Joyce L. Hocker, William Wilmot. Huge textbook. Windward Community College Psy 253 course. Eye opening.

No specifics and no evidence has been given. Savannah Gankiewicz should now use her platform for doing good. The fact that she is from Hawaii should be a source of pride for those who love the state. Pageant fans are upset because her stepping in creates the impression that she supports the leaders of Miss USA who are being accused of mistreatment. The former title holder is being held to a NDA that never expires - she can’t say ANYTHING about her experience as Miss USA regardless of its positive or negative - EVER. This pageant claims to be about “empowering” women yet they are silencing them in reality. Not only did Miss USA resign, so did Miss Teen USA and most of the staff. Does that mean Miss Hawaii should be bullied? No. But unfortunately that is society today. Take a look at our political leaders - committee meetings resemble WWE Wrestling events and our last President made bullying 100% acceptable (so long as you agree with whomever is doing the bullying. I also have a question for you - if it was Miss Wisconsin who had taken the title and was being bullied would you have made this video - or is it only because she is from Hawaii?

There are a couple things in play. First, maybe only 1 in 500 are crappy people. If you are talking about teenagers then that number jumps to 3 out of 4 people are crappy (joke)…But unfortunately this tiny insignificant minority ends up being thousands of people that take up about 30% of social media and comments section as they are the most vocal and most engaged-especially if they can be an anonymous keyboard warrior behind a monitor in their mother’s house. I’ll admit that I am a keyboard warrior as I have an easier time commenting than saying the exact same thing in front of a group of strangers at a work seminar. But then again I’m not mean spirited. I tell myself, ‘when I write something, can I stand up for my content if it was on the front page news?’ Sorry I don’t really have a solution besides a human moderator who authorizes comments before posting. But I imagine that can be both overwhelming and subjective. I don’t care for AI moderators as the technology not there yet for determining what is an acceptable public opinion. For people on the receiving end of hateful comments I don’t really have a solution as I would also be emotionally crushed if a bunch of random strangers attacked me through text. I suppose we just need to try our best to ignore crappy people.

Truly feel bad for her…Unfortunately our world these days is full of vile and shallow people with these views and beliefs…the current political spectrum promotes these ignorance thoughts and makes these acts acceptable to many. 😢

I laughed, but not because it was funny, but because Hawaii is unique where family, respect and pono is a thing. The mainland...not so much, so she just accepted the crown, she didn't do anything wrong, she didn't have too. Somebody, mainland style would find something, anything wrong with it.

I haven't been following this and I'm in Hawaii😂 I don't understand any of it why is she being bullied? She was runner-up and she took the person who quits place right I'm trying to find where shes being bullied. I can't find anywhere does anybody know why?

I think because online supporters of the former Miss USA think she should have turned it down.

I don’t the whole story but Who exactly is attacking her? People on the mainland? People in hawaii? Both? That’s why America is messed up. Social media is largely to blame where people can hide behind the computer and make bold attacks.

Hard to say who, but seems like mostly mainland.

My feelings are hurt when I get a Reddit downvote; meaningful discussions somehow went away. I’m sorry if Miss Hawaii wasn’t ready- but she stepped into the middle of something ugly, doesn’t make it right though.

Reddit. I just lurk there. It's hard to have a meaningful discussion online.

Some people dont like it when other people have a different point of view. She accepted the title. This offended the nimrods who feel the world revolves around them and thus need to express their sad and pathetic points of view. Pretty sad really.

Nah, Bullies want the reaction! That's what bullying is all about. If you "ignore" a bully, you take all the power away from them...

I tried to find those comments so I could see for myself but was not able to. Chris's own experience aside, let's say that he took a position in Donald Trump's administration. He would be either hailed or reviled. Cyber bullying is a given for both private and public personalities and has taken on gladiatorial entertainment value. The only solution is a personal one--to find refuge and solace in one's micro world of friends, family, significant others, a good meal, a walk in the forest. Ignore that which doesn't not affect you until it does and deal with it then.

This is what happens when you're in the public .... you have to just be prepared for it. Have to be "thick" skinned. People are brave when being anonymous, but in person, not so much...

Agree that public figures should be prepared for criticism, but that's different from personal attacks.

Nah, if it's not personal, it won't sting! That's what bullies do, they make personal attacks. Of course it's personal, or it wouldn't hurt!

We’re not kids….. when in the lime light,, people will be people… but bullying isn’t the right word… just plain evil n mean… but that’s life… we don’t live in a unicorn world..life is messy..be a light…shine bright… but all this noise is just that noise…fueling to the fire of dividing. ….unity is with love… but nah…I’m not gonna take it personally… none of us should…. I was raised with strong men and women figures… dust it off move on… people are people… carry on

Probably because people are struggling with inflation and the high cost of living. Maybe because Miss USA is a mainland organization. Does it really matter? People are dying in Gaza and Ukraine. Maybe people need to get a life?
