The GRIT automation system for a home shop typically falls within the price range of $2000-$3500. In a previous comment, a mention of a $5000 system was priced out, which suggests the presence of either numerous tools in the shop or higher priced three phase tools. For a standard GRIT system, comprising of seven tools (triggers) and seven blast gate controls, a collector device, along with the GRIT hub, the approximate cost would be around $2500. We do understand that this still is not in everyone’s price range. Investing in the GRIT system is akin to purchasing a valuable tool such as a Sawstop. Not only does GRIT provide enhanced safety and automation, but it also enables greater efficiency making for better quality time in your shop.

Grit automation, Thanks for your reply. I wanted to share what my comment was based on for everyone. Here is what is in the shop that I priced out on the web site. I am lucky to have built a very nice home shop over some 45 of years wood working as a hobby. The system I had to manually put together as the program at the time would not price a complete package out after inputting my tool information. I had a Hub, and a total of 10 blast gates 9 - 5" and 1 - 4" with 9 regular triggers and one 30 amp for the 5hp Sawstop. The the shop has a jointer, planer, router table, band saw, drill press, spindle sander, disc sander, floor sweep and wide belt sander which were all 5" blast gates and I added the really cool sensor switch for the air filtration. Also a unit for the Oneida dust collector. I do not have any three phase tools but I do have 5" blast gates which cost $225 verses the $100 price of a 4" gate which could explain the extra cost along with 2 more tools and a floor sweep. I really like the product you are offering and would be a nice addition to my shop. Unfortunetly it is comes a price that is out of this average persons budget.

The prices for the GRIT system look pretty reasonable to me. I've actually spent some time prototyping a similar DIY system myself, based on ESP32 microcontrollers, current sensors, and servo motors to move the blast gates. My conclusion was that it's possible to DIY, but only if you're a competent programmer. (Fortunately I'm a retired software engineer.) But it was going to be a lot of work, especially the software part. People who freak out about the cost of systems like this often complain about how high the retail price is compared to the cost of the parts that go into it (the bill of materials or "BOM Cost"). But the BOM cost is nowhere near the whole story. It takes a huge amount of time to develop a product like this, and even more time to make it bulletproof enough to sell to people who aren't engineers. The latter is where the DIY dust collection automation systems I've seen fall down. They are nowhere near being "plug and play"; instead you have to modify the source code, recompile, update the microcontrollers, etc. in order to to configure them.) The developer needs to get paid for all that time they spent on R&D, and usually that's a bigger portion of the retail price than the BOM cost is. Also, the price has to cover the time that they or their staff spend on sales, order fulfillment, tech support, etc. Plus office space and benefits for any staff. Machine tools, 3d printers and/or electronics lab gear for production. Warehouse or storage space for stocking the product. It all adds up quickly. I need to do a bit more research, but I'll probably be buying a GRIT system for the big new shop I'm about to set up. (Once construction of my new garage/shop building is finally done.)

I don't believe I heard Jason mention the exceptional level of support from Grit Automation. I'm bringing my Grit system up right now and Joel and Jaclyn are incredibly helpful. My Gyro 700 dust collector switching required a feature not yet in their system. The feature was added and pushed automatically to my system (via the Hub) to bring the collector to life. They are helpful to brainstorm the best solution for your particular shop. The functionality I have now is way better than I had originally conceived when designing my setup. This isn't the sort of thing you think about when you consider buying something, but I'm incredibly happy to have these guys as a resource for the system.

Same here, I don't like alot of IoT things because each device wants to talk to the Internet, and I'm not about that. But with this, it has the controller in your household so it's much more manageable. When I move to a bigger place after I get married, and have a better dedicated shop space, I'm 100% doing this. The safety aspect is huge, too.

It's VERY unfortunate that the triggers do no support 9 Volt output to run the blast gates. The triggers do include 6V output which is not very useful. The 9V 20A low voltage power banks on Grit's site are $75, no big deal, but I'm NOT going to daisy-chain 9v wire all over my shop. So, I'll need to add a 9V power supply ($75) to each gate on top of the trigger ($150) and gate control ($150). This also requires the use of ANOTHER 120V receptacle for every gate.

Hi James, thanks for the comment. No internet required, no iOS app, no Android app, the system creates its own WiFi network that a mobile device or computer can connect to. The app is a PWA (progressive web app), it looks like a native app but is really just a responsive web application that resides on the hub. Software updates would be the one caveat, they require the hub to be connected to the internet. This is very important because as you said, things happen and if you as a customer are left a product that does not work, that's bad. Insteon is a great example of this. I spent $5K and replaced every switch in my house. Last year they shutdown all servers and people were left high and dry. GRIT does not send or pull any data from the hub. Everything is local. Certain features that home shops most likely don't need would require an internet connection, but these are subscription based and that revenue pays to keep the servers running.
@espressomatic
@espressomatic Жыл бұрын
Local mesh according to mfr site. Main hub will need to connect to your WiFi AP/router to use the app/setup, but I didn't notice anything that mentioned remote/server connections.
@gritautomation
@gritautomation Жыл бұрын
@@espressomatic The hub has 3 ways of connecting to it. Initially you would connect to a Wi-Fi network it creates or plug it into your local switch via ethernet. And correct, it does not talk to any cloud server for any functionality. To access your system remotely we have installed a WireGuard client. This allows for remote access that is secure and does not rely on any middle cloud server for routing. It really is fully autonomous.

You get ESP and do it for a fraction of the cost in parts and 10x the cost in time, labor and experience. Which is what they've done already, plus developed an app (which would cost you $100-$500k to pay someone to do). Now they're selling what they've done so other people don't have to reinvent the wheel. Each piece comes in pretty reasonably for what it is. Not sure why people have a problem with other people making and selling things. You can probably also build your own table saw. Is it worth the time?

@@espressomatic it’s way overpriced for what it is. It’s a couple relays, a couple solenoids and a controller. The software is overkill, and the “kill switch” is just a breaker.

I’ll pass, and keep my GreenGate system. Much more professionally thought out and less parts. Thx
