Now, I never actually used D3D myself, so I can't tell in detail. In fact certain games do have both a D3D9 and D3D11 renderer, which are likely to be completely different code. D3D12 is also very different from D3D11. It is closer in "philosophy" to Vulkan - both of which are inspired from/based on AMD's Mantle, which never took off. OpenGL is sort of similar. OpenGL3 was the most disruptive one, but has a compatibility mode which makes most OpenGL2 still operational, only few modern game does this though. CAD software is a different story, and can make use of OpenGL4 extensions while still requiring a compatibility profile... There is no spiritual equivalent to D3D12 in OpenGL, but that is basically Vulkan. So comparing the APIs by age do not really make sense. Both D3D and OGL evolved drastically since then.

What an amazing video, it was really enjoyable to watch something where Linus still talked at a somewhat normal volume instead of shouting into the camera all the time and creating a super fake atmosphere. I love the older videos, especially the ones that are even a few years older than this, because back then there was still actual conversation going on in the videos and not every word was scripted, so conversations feel forced and fake funny. The dry and sometimes stupid humor back then was so much better!
