There are amazing gardens in Fairbanks. Flowers basket that are four ft around is common. The university has experimental garden that is open to the public they grow so many different vegetables. I seen corn grown, zucchini, peas garlic all the herbs. A lot of things that are perennial in the states are annuals here and much has to be started indoors. The state fair has an amazing show of what grows in the interior. There is a KZbin video called " The Secret is in the Soil" by John Evens and what he grows in Palmer Alaska is amazing and he holds many world records worth looking at to see what can be grown in Alaska.

3 factors: 1) the soil is not depleted 2) extra mineral content due to glacier grinding rocks for a very long time 3) longer days equal more photosynthesis.

Come on up Susan. It is not that expensive people have started renting uhauls and driving them all over the state for 20$ a day that's cheaper than a motel and no bugs to worry about. Where there is a will there is a way. Watch the airlines they have cheap flights I got two of my grandkids coming in a few days their tickets were 400 a piece round trip from Oregon. Don't get sucked in by the tourist traps they get the people up at 5 am and Rush them here and there when the road is literally one big circle. And you can purchase a cruise to see the whales at the harbor master, even have dinner if you want. Serious can do Alaska on the cheap.
