This cable car only runs during certain times. However, the Cable Car 150th Anniversary gives me an opportunity to catch this cable car itself during every Saturdays of each month all the way until October. During May 6 2023, I ran all the way to Van Ness Avenue & California Street Cable Car Station and I got there first before Big 19 arrives. Anyway, this cable car is given its nickname “Big 19” to not confuse with the Powell Street single ended cable car that is also numbered 19.
Big 19 is the biggest and oldest cable car that’s currently operated by Muni itself. Originally built in 1883 by Central Pacific Railroad as an open sided cable car, but converted into a double ended cable car from 1907 to 1908 by United Railroads, the company that leads to Muni’s debut in 1912. Interestingly that this cable car uses to run on Market Street until 1906, then relocated to Sacramento & Clay Streets (Including parts of Andrew Smith Hallidie’s original Clay Street Hill Railroad) until 1942, and finally after all the modifications and maintenance, it currently runs in California Street Cable Car Line since 2019. The length of this cable car is longer than the normal California Street double ended cable cars, making it the biggest one in the entire cable car fleet.
