Here’s another cable car that only runs during certain times while the other one is Big 19. Unlike that cable car, Cable Car 42 shares the same length with the normal California Street cable cars. However, the livery of this cable car represents the old days when double ended cable cars (Like the ones from California Street Cable Car Line) run on Hyde Street until Prop E from 1954 scammed the entire public, resulting in the closure of the O’Farrell, Jones, & Hyde Cable Car Line & Washington/Jackson Cable Car Line, merging the 2 to become the Powell/Hyde Line that exists today. 6 of the former O’Farrell, Jones, & Hyde Cable Cars (50, 51, 53, 56, 57, & 58) relocated to California Street Line. Meanwhile, Cable Car 42 was instead moved to Santa Maria Valley as a motorized cable car until 1993 when it returned to San Francisco for the restoration. In 2005, Cable Car 42 was restored back to the original appearance when it ran in O’Farrell, Jones, & Hyde Line during the good old days. Also this cable car was built after the 1906 Earthquake & Fire by the same company that built Muni’s First Streetcar.
Anyway, this video actually covers the northern part of the Powell/Hyde Line as the Powell Street section have no crossover track sections unlike the rest of the sections in the San Francisco Cable Car System that’s part of Muni itself. Cable Car 42 only runs in the Powell/Hyde Line as a shuttle service between Fisherman’s Wharf & Cable Car Museum where the cable cars are parked in as part of the 150th Anniversary of the cable cars in San Francisco during the first Sundays of each month until October. While single ended cable cars currently runs on Hyde Street, riding the double ended Cable Car 42 on Hyde Street partially brings back memories from the time when double ended cable cars ruled Hyde Street until 1954.
California Street Cable Railroad (Cal Cable), the former operator of the California Street Cable Car Line, also used to operate the Hyde Street section of the cable car system from 1891 to 1951 as part of the O’Farrell, Jones, & Hyde Line that was closed down by Prop E in 1954.
