This is my future example of why the XCOM reboot games, whilst amazing in their own right, don’t fully capture XCOM. I’ve had whole XCOM 2 games where nobody dies, then you play the originals and it’s Omaha beach all over again!
@korenn9381 Жыл бұрын
Yes, the new xcom games are not in the same category. But the Long War overhauls get as close as the modern games can be, and in my opinion are the best turned based strategy has to offer. It has the sleekness of the new games approach but the (occasional) difficulty flavour of the old games. I love the old games, but Xcom 2 Long War is even better.
@jonathan2847 Жыл бұрын
Tbf in the original xcoms it hurts much less to loose people. In the reboots on the hardest difficulty if you loose your best squad you loose the game.
@jasam01 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, they are very different in style. Losing a single member in the new ones hurts (which really made modern XCom 2 feel thematically better then modern 1!). While in the original... Losing a half dozern of your strongest soliders might have the same impact? Or losing all your equipment from bad mission.

I remember times i simply used a few unarmed suicide soldiers. They ran outside on turn 1 to scout a big area. When surviving the first walk, they also would be the primary moleculair control victims as far as i recall. But without arms, no big issue. Meanwhile i would use the long range waypoint missiles to wipe out spotted aliens and suspicious areas. Just dont take out the area to enter the next level XD As long no one with a missile launcher gets under MC youre fine... so send in the expendables first.

I see so many people totally ignoring tanks. And that is why there is such a massacre. As I remember playing this 20 yrs ago, completing both series with the same tactics... 1) build up 3 top tanks 2) use them for all the combat, 3 tanks in a platoon literally destroy whatever they see 3) there is place for 2 crew member in the dropship. these just sit inside and gain free experience while not doing anything in the combat. 4) Once these two gain enough experience (and it rockets as game thinks that these 2 did all the job), you just put another 2 and boost them. After few missions, you have many strong soldiers, that are immune to psy attacks (if you were training them at the base, of course). One tank can be dropped then, and you end up with 2 tanks and 6 terminators with blaster launchers that are eliminating everyone without even leaving the dropship. The main part is using tanks - they are immune to mind control and can eliminate any alien very fast due their accuracy and cost per shot.

lol "the alien base attacks are almost impossible without molecular control" these guys are bad at classic xcom. For the surface mission, just ensure you have sonic weapons. Armor doesn't really matter because you shouldn't be getting hit. Do not bring any grenades whatsoever and ensure all soldiers drop their weapons on the ground turn 1. This means anyone who does get mind controlled can't do anything. Now, you camp the sub doors for ~30-some turns, and the enemies will all come to you. If you have big iron balls you can try throwing particle disturbance grenades outside of the sub door to blow up anything coming after you, but anyone who is mind controlled WILL throw one inside the sub and kill everyone. You must pick them up from the ground and throw them outside that way, nobody can carry them. This will handle the vast majority of the surface mission. When you get inside the base, there is no more MC to worry about, and it's just a matter of slowly killing everything in there with sonic weapons, and ensuring you always have TU's for reaction fire. It's even more embarrassing since Yogscast came from SomethingAwful (Ye Olde Goone Squade) who have a community of classic x-com experts on the gaming forum who taught people how to be good at those games because one of them was also an OpenXcom developer. Sad!
@Bogwedgle11 ай бұрын
I mean, yeah, you can play it like that, it's definitely optimal to do so if your only goal is to win. This is a stream. Do you think 30 turns of door camping would be an entertaining stream to watch? "Hey guys welcome back to our 20th 4 hour stream of us hiding in a box"
@wowsnav11 ай бұрын
@@Bogwedgle "Do you think 30 turns of door camping would be an entertaining stream to watch?" I'm not a mindbroken zoomer NPC that watches streamers or e-celebs, but I can tell you that one where people are winning the game will always be better than one where people are fantastically losing. I don't care about watching losers.
@Bogwedgle11 ай бұрын
@@wowsnav So what you're saying, if I'm getting this right, is you're not a mindbroken zoomer npc who watches streamers or E-celebs, you just come to watch videos of highlights of their streams and complain about how bad they are at the games? Your entire skin in this game is being a smug killjoy? Other people are mindbroken npcs but you, you're the enlightened protagonist of reality because you don't watch the people you came here to watch and know how to boringly cheese a thirty year old strategy game and, for some reason, seem to tie up a sense of pride in that? You think you know what kind of streams are better, despite definitely not watching streams, and your idea of better is hiding in a corner playing silly doors abusing enemy pathing until you basically win by default? You look at a difficult game and rather than actually facing how challenging it is you would rather hide behind a door the enemies cannot open and pretend that makes you good at the game. It doesn't. These guys beat TFTD on ironman superhuman without hiding in a box for every challenging mission and yeah, it did take them 3 or 4 tries, but they did it, have you? Because if you need to use that kind of "strategy" to beat this game, you're bad at classic Xcom.
