Ireland is home to a great many monuments erected in the late Stone Age. The Brownshill Dolmen in Co. Carlow is one of the finest examples, with a capstone weighing 100 tonnes. Later generations of Irish people struggled to understand how these monuments were built, and by whom. Their solutions were sometimes very imaginative indeed…

The top lintel symbolizes the ark of Noah. The huge boat was the first idol. It was a passageway from the age of Saturn, when the gods dwelt with men. The ark of Noah was a tomb. The first coffin and the passengers were in a state of torpor. It was dark in the ark
