If you need to use a map, do NOT get a magnetic phone holder. Use a clamp phone holder, saves your life. Get an aux, or use Bluetooth, listen to the directions, or if you want to play music, set a Playlist every morning. And always watch the blind spots, when you panic, rush, and realized you've overshot, don't immediately signal and turn into the other lane. There is always, always a car. Go straight, drive with your direction senses, and always look for a place you can turn safely into. These are my two major mistakes. Try to rely on your maps less, because the GPS isn't always correct. Furthermore, it is not specific, as you do not see lanes.

My number 1 bad habit? Not keeping enough of a distance to the car in front. Giving yourself time to react in an emergency is paramount in safe and preventive driving. Germany actually has this legislated. You have to maintain half of your current speed (km/h) in meters as minimum safety distance to the car in front. And there are actually special markings on the motorways and measuring tools that the police use in order to enforce this rule. Maintaining enough safety distance also allows you in some cases to brake less and therefore save fuel and have reduced brake wear.
@twistsouth5146 жыл бұрын

@kft47646 жыл бұрын
I have much the same mindset about not impeding people. Partly because it's respectful of other people, but also partly because if I do that I don't need to trust other people's judgement/ attention. For example I don't cut in front of faster moving cars, relying on them to be paying attention and slowing down for me. I also try not to change into a lane directly next to another car - I'll wait till we aren't side by side to change lanes. It's not about letting other people dictate how I drive, it's about not relying on others for my safety.
@Slowcarfastbeans5 жыл бұрын
I suggest space management as a slogan. Fast drivers are useful because they create space...but then they don’t know when to curtail it as they have created enough space. Slower drivers are also useful because they allow faster traffic to create space...but they often use the same speed in all lanes of the motorway. If you employ a strategy that naturally creates space for everyone, you’ll find it more maneuverable and less stressed which I believe is what everybody wants on the roads.

I have 20 years of driving experience in Canada, US, and Hong Kong. My biggest pet peeve is people not following the zipper merge technique. It’s as if they think driving is a race from A to B, and they cannot afford to give up one or two car spaces. The inability to be courteous to other drivers is what often sets off road rage. Ironic thing is before I learned the zipper merge technique, I too was one of those drivers that felt being taken advantage off when other cars zip down an empty lane that’s about to end. I used to feel as if they are somehow cheating or skipping the line. I feel that as soon as we all get rid of the notion and belief of trying to always be no. 1 in line, then we will all be able to drive in a much more courteous manner.

@flameshoter65 жыл бұрын
@@affilinet Because there are way too many idiots who don't realize that method....
@morthim5 жыл бұрын
zipper merge is dumb. it is worse for traffic than not having the lane. also people using the zipper merge technique are rude. it isn't a matter of sorting, it is a matter of throughput. the zipper lanes work for letting people on highways because both lanes can fill and it just makes the lane effectively longer. but for normal roads, it takes more time for two lanes to merge than for one lane to fully deplete then the other. it isn't a feeling that they are skipping a line. they literally are skipping the line, and causing congestion in the process. if there was no zipper merge, more cars would get through. why? because it is one train of linked cars, instead of multiple. it angers me that people advocate these things, cause i've tested them and they don't work. they reduce traffic efficiency by up to 50%. but they try to claim a both falsifiable and false and falsified claim. the reason zipper merges "work" for highways, with light protection, but not on normal roads without involves a lack of consistent acceleration and distance. the highway onramps force people to take turns, and engage in full accelleration. conversely, normal roads have a green light allowing traffic to flow, and people doing the dynamic zipper merge do not merge congruent to the rate the natural lane accelerates. thus a 45 seccond light with all cars in a line will get ~30 cars through without a zipper merge and only 15-20 with it. missing a light can add 5 minutes onto a journey, and missing 5 lights can lead to a half hour of wasted transit time directly resultant from people "cutting in line". they work for highways not because they actually work, but because the point is to reduce the number of cars on the highway. and congestion is reduced by redirecting traffic onto other routes. the lights for on ramps are taxes, charging time, leading people to avoid the road in favor of other ones. at a strictly rational level, if cars in a line were able to merge without the huge lane efficiency costs, you are both right and it would be better, but they can't. thus it would be better to have lights with disappearing lanes do one then the other. because again, it takes only the drive time of the vehicles * the vehicles to get a single lane of traffic through, meanwhile there are merging inefficiencies. cars aren't sequenced so they have to match speed and direction. but there is no direction in a presequenced line. thus there is only speed and distance from the bumper infront of you.
@affilinet5 жыл бұрын
@@morthim You are wrong, Traffic flows faster with zipper merge. You merge at the end, One car from One lane and One car from the other lane, simple. If people Try to merge earlier you create multiple points where the traffic slows down.You have to merge at some point.There are Computer simulations Proving this. Another thing is when a Traffic light turns Green it would be faster if all cars Start moving at the same time instead of One After the other.

You have to keep speeding up until their is a 20KM difference (roughly) thats when they pay attention to their speed and realize what they are doing. in my case i just drive beside them for 10mins (if i have to) and eventually they settle down to there usuall routine of randomly slowing down and i pass them.

Another one for the list: People passing trucks on the right. When a truck goes for a pass and is trying to get enough distance before moving back to the right and impatient people immediately start passing him on the right, ensuring he cant get back over.
@brendanH2O6 жыл бұрын
Doctor Ferdinand I agree, but I find in many “southern states of America” trucks often try to pass 4-5 trucks in a row not just 1 at a time and can literally take 3-5 minutes doing so going 65MPH and people get pissed and start trying to passing on the right.

@VAspeed36 жыл бұрын
Trucks that want to take 2 minutes to pass another truck to gain a half mile per hour should just decide not to pass and stay out of the way of faster moving traffic. Huge jams and accidents result in the clots of traffic that pile up behind them. If a truck gets passed on the right, it's usually because he doesn't belong in the left.
@32Tdub6 жыл бұрын
I get your point, but this actually falls into the "pull in front of you and fails to speed up" category much of the time. If you're going to move into the left lane you should be prepared to participate by at least speeding up to some degree to finish your pass. I find that most trucks that are hanging there to pass several trucks are doing so at almost 1 mph over the other truck. Like watching paint dry lol.

This is one of those unwritten rules of the road. If you are traveling along and there's no vehicles within sight behind you, that car waiting to turn onto the highway will do so in front of you, but close enough that you *will* to *brake* aggressively. If its daytime, I hold my high beams on the whole time I pressing the brake. At night, I pray I don't hit them.
@Towert76 жыл бұрын
I have 5 even worse: 1) People who should merge onto a highway but instead come to a COMPLETE stop. Talk about setting yourself up to get rear ended. 2) Not leaving enough space between you and the car in front. I don't know who said to keep a car or 2 car lengths in front, but that is complete bullshit. As the speed increases, so too must the distance you keep from the next person. I've seen more accidents caused by people driving too close than any other type of accident. Related to this is when you are keeping a safe distance from a car in front, but someone decides to merge in between. Now there isn't enough space for either of the 3 cars. And don't even talk about tail gating. Tail gating is never safe for either party, nor the parties behind. 3) Brake checking someone. This ties in with road rage, but who ever thinks it's a good idea to brake check someone doesn't realize how many other lives you put at risk. Driving is not the time to 'punish' someone. 4) Texting / driving drunk / driving stoned. I classify these three as equally dangerous. How many times has a texting driver veered into an oncoming lane? That's got to be the most dangerous type of accident (head on where you just clip the side of another car). Any distracted driving or impaired driving should not be tolerated. It kills. 5) People that pass you only to slow down right after the pass is made.

The "people pulling out and not speeding up" is so relateble and I think you're the first one I've heard complain about it. I think out of all of these bad habits that's the one that irritates me the most. I'll be driving 60MPH (97kph) and all of a sudden somebody will cut out right in front of me and BARLEY accelerate. This is turn causes me to have to slam on my brakes. The most annoying thing is when it's on an open road and they could have waited an extra 5 seconds and not need to cut me off. It's understandable if there is heavier traffic and somebody is desperate for an opening, but usually in those situations the person cutting in to traffic will floor it to get up to speed, or if they're really courteous they will move over the the other lane if it's a 4 lane highway to let you pass them before moving back over.
@patrickslusher8446 жыл бұрын

It's especially annoying when there is a long line of cars slowly passing the right lane and there is absolutely nowhere to go but to get in line in the left lane. Yet people slam there car into safe distances causing a cascade of brakes, potentially spawning a mini jam.
@patrickslusher8446 жыл бұрын
@@phillipBappleton YES! Exactly! I hate that more than anything. I feel like the only way to stop it is to get dangerously close to the car in front of me, which I'm not willing to do...but if I have any safe chance at all I will always cut off the opening. Wait in line like everyone else!
@DragoonWarrior7906 жыл бұрын
As long as the person behind you is willing to wait for you to pass. Not saying you are doing anything wrong. I was passing someone who was going about 3-4 under the speed limit. Definitely an opportunity to pass, but it was a divided 4 lane and I wasn't in a hurry. I see a big black truck coming up behind me and figured they would wait. Instead they stomped on the gas, switched to the right, flew between me and the person I was just about to pass with barely enough space, then cut in front of the other person with barely enough space. Wouldn't have felt too sorry had I seen their truck in the ditch a mile later.
@patrickslusher8446 жыл бұрын
@rcmp17 you must have much better drivers where you are...this would never fly for me here. To maintain 65 I would be passing someone every 30 seconds...except when I can't because there's a line of 20 cars already waiting to pass the truck I'm stuck behind. Then you get the on-ramp merges where you pretty much have to move left anyway...for me that's a much more stressful method but we all have to do what works!

It’s definitely the anonymity video game effect. Other drivers are looked at as another car or not another human being. This goes both ways... for the aggressive driver coming 2ft. From your bumper as they pass and for the person camping in the left lane. Be aware of the situation and don’t be oblivious to how your actions are affecting others. Actually care about others!?! This is actually not hard but it seems that many people these days feel they shouldn’t be bothered with caring about their fellow man/woman. It’s easy to be polite in person but when people feel insulated by their screen or their windshield their true nature seems to override their behaviors. We can do better as a society but it takes parents raising their kids to be considerate of others. One of my massive gripes is being "bullied" by larger vehicles when they're supposed to be yielding to you. I've had this several times when I've had the right of way but Uncle Chad in his F-150 can't let a Miata in front of him so he'll zip out in front of me to get ahead. Only to make the first turn off of the road I'm on, so they essentially get ahead of you for five seconds only to turn off onto another road.

I feel like the biggest problem among drivers is impatience. People drive with excess speed and with a disregard for other people so that they can feel like they're getting to their destination faster, when in reality they end up waiting at the same traffic lights as the guy who drives under the speed limit. I've only been driving for a year, and I've had people honk at me multiple times for turning through an intersection too slowly, despite the fact that it was warranted by the blind corner and my driving instructor says that I was not too slow. People get angry for having to wait 0.5 seconds. They need to relax and get some perspective. Driving is a serious responsibility.

Honestly, as long as your driving the speed limit I don't disagree, however talking corners or turns slow for me isnt annoying to makes me angry because it then slows me down, I would never advise someone take a corner or turn faster than they can handle and people that slow down for them it still makes me mad but its 100 percent understandable what makes me angry is when people practically stop for them as it gets in my way and shows they have no business driving if they don't know how or can not drive a corner The reason it makes me angry however is different than most its not impatience its because I drive VERY efficiently and save alot of money doing so. from a physics standpoint the less you need to slow down to take a curve or turn the most efficient it is

The one thing missed here, and it was a great video, was braking in the middle of a turn. It's outright dangerous to apply the brakes into a turn for the drivers behind you that are maintaining a certain speed and are expecting you to hold that speed entering and accelerating out of the turn. And because it reduces grip for the driver doing it... especially if the road conditions are slick like on ice or snow.
@GeekTherapyRadio6 жыл бұрын
The turn signal one and not signalling lane changes. There are three reasons people do this and three only: 1) They are too stupid to work a simple lever. 2) They are too lazy. 3) Both. And I'll admit, I used to be bad with signals. I'd always use them, but I only let the bulb flash once. Then one day I realized how stupid and useless I was being by doing that. So I like the part at the end of the video that we all make mistakes, the key is to realize it and do better. The sad thing is, lots and lots of people just don't care, or worse, don't know better. They'll go their entire life not using their signals thinking everyone else is the asshole for a cautionary honk or quick high beam blip, never realizing they are the ones at 100% fault. Wrecking their cars and getting into fender-benders because "everyone else is stupid." At its core, not signalling signifies a general passiveness, lackadaisical attitude, and downright reckless approach to driving. If signalling isn't important to you, odds are you likely have a few dents on your car or a few avoidable fender benders on your insurance. We've been lulled into the false sense of security our safe cars lead us to believe, and increasingly distracted by gizmos. The windshield alone is enough to make you forget you're actually doing something extremely dangerous since you can't feel the violence of the high speed wind on your face and the roar of traffic. We might as well be sitting in a recliner listening to music. So ALWAYS use your signals and keep up with the FLOW of traffic. Then WHEN you make a mistake, OWN IT and try to be better.

Yeah, its stupid to tailgate, especially if you aren't actually intending to pass, but when you think about it, if you are getting tailed, chances are YOU are doing something wrong and stupid. There is ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE even if you are over the speed limit to impede other drivers from passing you; they have the right to speed if they want, and in most states, the left lane is the passing lane, by law. When I tail someone, I will do it until one of three things happens: they create a speed differential and I can pass, they do nothing and I back off, or another opportunity to pass presents itself. Regardless, few have the right to get mad at a tailgater because chances are, the tailgated is the one instigating the conflict in the first place.

But there always is that one person (usually in a Prius or a Subaru) driving under the limit. That creates a long line of pissed off drivers who then pass the person aggressively. Most of the roads where I live have a lot of curves (not corners) and so there are very few passing zones. I don't know about other countries or even some states, but in the northeast USA speed limits are absurdly low. my #1 which wasn't on this list, is when you're driving well over the speed limit in the left lane (i.e. your cruise control set to 76 in a 65) and going faster than the vehicles in the right lane, but someone behind you speeds up into the 80s and passes you, but then end up driving slower than you were going (i.e. 68-70 mph), so you end up having to pass them, and continue at a steady 76mph, but then of course, they feel the need to once again accelerate and pass you and resume at 70mph, and this going back and forth back and forth, it's quite annoying.. it would be ok if they passed and continued to drive faster, but overtime, they always seem to end up slowing down. I guess this also goes with the mentality that they want to be infront, but it's very annoying when they pass you but end up not driving faster than you were, which causes you to have to hit your brakes, disengage cruise control, and/or have to pass them. I usually have to slam my gas when they attempt to pass more than twice and deny them or gain enough distance ahead of them that they don't feel the need to pass (out of range of their subconscious that tells them to be in front).

It might be also that they're terrible at judging the speed of other drivers. Possibly they might feel like you're driving a little slower than them (even though you're not) so they pass and get in front. Then they don't realize you were already going faster than they were so you end up having to slow down for them. Highway hypnosis, anxiety, sleep deprivation, bad day, and other stuff may also come into play. But yes, it's annoying having to slow down for someone pulling in front and slowing down.

I see bad drivers all the time. Best thing you can do is just accept it, it's not going to change so it is a waste of emotion to get annoyed about it. The safest way to travel by car is not to be in a hurry. Drive relaxed, stay as far behind the car in front of you so that the amount of time it takes to close that distance is longer than any distraction is likely to take your attention away from the road. Obey the speed limit. Not always, but in most cases the speed limit is set to allow adequate reaction time for likely events. When you speed most of the time you get away with it so it is easy to think it is no problem, then someone pulls on the road from a partially hidden driveway or you come around a curve and find traffic has backed up at a red light and you were distracted just at the wrong moment and your exceeding the speed limit shorten your reaction time just a little too much.

In fairness, there are also epidemics of people in urban corridors like this who insist on running red lights. If you pull into the intersection to make your left, and then a bunch of oncoming assholes push right through the yellow phase and then slip a couple of extra cars through after the lights are red, you're now stuck in an intersection, causing actual gridlock. It's also completely unnecessary to "enter the intersection" to make a left turn, unless what you mean is, "to block traffic so I can force cross traffic who have a green light to wait for met to make a left turn on red," in which case you're all being assholes. Not a criticism of you personally-- when I drive in urban shitholes, I often do asshole shit myself since people's total lack of regard for normal procedures makes driving like a non-asshole literally impossible.
@nodak816 жыл бұрын
+Julian B That rarely happens, it takes two seconds to complete the turn when you're already in the intersection. If there is traffic from direction X blocking your path so you're stuck in the intersection, then the traffic from direction Y can't go anywhere anyway.
@smithiness6 жыл бұрын
Nodak81, then you need to visit Phoenix. I live here and agree with Julian B. Traffic in the intersection from previous green will not prevent the other direction from proceeding to crowd around them.

I couldn't agree more. There seems to be a me first attitude today. Almost every day on my drive home from work there's someone in front doing 45 on a 60mph road, and then they leave me behind when they get to a lower limit through a village, so annoying. The trouble is there are drivers and then there are people who just travel using a car, totally different. Can we all just have a bit of consideration for others? Not just when driving either.

Years ago, when I was young and beautiful, some fambly was visiting us in Alberta from Toronto. 02:30 hrs. Driving to our bedroom community outside Edmonton. 2 lane undivided. Car moves to pass me. I back off the gas, signal and move right about a foot and a half. My uncle Mike asks why I did that. Says if he wants to pass, that's his problem. I asked him, "If there's a guy beside me, on the wrong side of the yellow line, for ten seconds instead of twenty, is that better for him or me?"

I find it acceptable on 4-lane (each way) freeways to be on the second from right lane, since exits tend to be much closer together and slow mergers mean you either have to keep weaving in and out or slow your overall speed to 50-55 mph.
@Sublimer796 жыл бұрын
As long as there is a Left lane besides you for passing. Totally understandable. They dont always mean the far right. Unless u are driving slow. Then u should be in the far right. Just to be safe. And the people in the on ramp should be able to go in front of u easy . or behind u.

How about tailgaters? Especially when there is traffic congestion and no one is going anywhere fast? Also, driving too fast for the conditions.
@Jet-Pack6 жыл бұрын
Just make room and let them pass. They might need to catch a plane, avoid getting fired for getting to work late, medical emergency (but not calling an ambulance, e.g. driving pregnant wife to hospital), catch a flight or train for an important business meeting that could ruin your company, other urgent situations like your house is on fire and you want to save your precious stuff, got stuck and traffic and are now late for an exam that could change your entire cariere. If you are ever in a situation like that and there is a guy in front that does not let you pass, even slows down to a crawl and try to teach you not to tailgate, then you'll understand why these tailgaters just want you to move aside :D Of course there are a-holes that think they own the road, too.

You’re supposed to come to a complete stop if there is no room to get on the highway! Instead people pull out in front of a car causing them to slam on their brakes and now you have the rubber band effect for miles. People who don’t stop should be ticketed.
@TheNondiscriminatory6 жыл бұрын
yeah, this one is incorrect, or at least vague. there are a few merges on my local 4 lane bypass (2 north lanes, 200 ft divide, two south lanes) that have u-turns with merges that are entirely impassable if the intersecting lights dotted every 1000 feet or so are green. only when the pack passes or the lights red can you merge. now on actual highways like I-45, I'm inclined to agree with you.
@KAMProductions6 жыл бұрын
Dom T WRONG! You don't stop unless there is a traffic jam! You MERGE with the flow of traffic. The point of an acceleration lane is to ACCELERATE! If there are multiple lanes on the highway or interstate, right lane drivers should move into the middle lane to let drivers enter the interstste. It's common sense!
@erikhaw73136 жыл бұрын
I guess you don’t drive the 110 in Cali, they have stop signs on their merge lanes....and they only give you 25 feet or less to go from zero to 65. Lol! Guess engineers can make mistakes, or not account for future driving dynamics.

most of the problems come about due to the lies we are constantly told about speeding. To set the record straight, speed doesnt kill, suddenly change in speed is what kills
@SteveAkaDarktimes6 жыл бұрын
you're not being as clever as you think you are. Problem is that people are not keeping proper distance to the car in the front. not even tailgating, which is an extreme, and the faster you go the less time you have and more distance you need to properly brake. because speed affects many things exponentionally, not linearly, and we humans suck at judging exponentials, driving faster is actually a problem.
@zinedinezidane83986 жыл бұрын
@@SteveAkaDarktimes Yes but, some people break unnecessarily all time, when they have plenty of reaction time, specially when their car has anti lock breaks. When there is no traffic ahead and you see people continue to break to stay below the limit is really annoying. Look at Germany, they have the autobahn where there is no speed limit, and to this day it is the safest motorway in the world. Because people are not looking at the speedo instead they are looking at the road. Don't deny it, speed cameras are just there to rip you off.
@zinedinezidane83986 жыл бұрын
@@SteveAkaDarktimes yes our brains are wired to judge exponentially. but there is nothing exponential about simple harmonic motion of a car. understand how much mass is in your car (this will increase your inertia, so make your breaking distance longer), and how good your breaks are (specially if you have anti-lock, or if your have expensive carbon ceramics and so on, then you should considerably reduce your breaking distance), and by that estimate a breaking distance for yourself, that suits your car, not get dictated a preposterously long breaking distance by the government. The government should also ask for a reaction test before getting a license, along with an iq test and also testing them on a track to teach them how a car behaves, along with a road test. But the government won't do that, too much money, although they tax the shit out of you.
