Thank you for saying this. I’ve always felt undertones of an “us vs them” sentiment throughout the Punjabi Sikh culture. As someone born in the US, who is straddling two cultures and doesn’t speak Punjabi fluently but has a desire to be in touch with his roots and ancestor’s spiritual teachings, this sentiment can feel obstructive.

@@nlvidaure4898Very well put VERY VERY WRONG message in this video though. The majority of Gurbani (Guru Arjan Dev ji's Bani) is wriiten in Punjabi. Guru Angad Dev ji produced and perfected the GURMUKHI (a phonetic script) to ensure proper prounciation of Shabd so that the meaning and therefore knowledge wasn't diluted. Furthermore, Philosphical and spiritual concepts vary from language to language - many words simply have no equivalent in other languages and many transliterations can be wrong. Furthermore, the idea mentioned video - encourages people of Punjabi background who aren't (or don't want to be) well versed in the language - TO NOT LEARN IT. FURTHERMORE, there are many people in the Sikh and wider Punjabi community - who view the beautiful Punjabi labguage..........as inferior, all the while obsessing with learning English or other languages so they can go abroad. I have also seen a rather internalized distain among second generation Punjabi decent parents (especially mothers) for the Punjabi language - who view ignorantly view such a beautiful language in which Gurbani as well as so much poetry, philosophy and folklore has been written - as primative. Why you might ask - because such a beautiful language is ignorantly associated with a backward patriarchal culture (as if our western culture with its many degeneracies) is better. Allot of food for thought.

Look at the word “Nirguniaray” in Gurbani… it’s always translated as “worthless” in English, so when I didn’t understand Gurbani at all I was reading the Shabads as “I am worthless” over and over again. I really started to believe it and became really depressed. THAT’S NOT WHAT IT MEANS!! Nirguniaray means without guN, simply meaning that all guNs belong to Him. This is a completely different way of looking at it. I now realize that the reason Gurbani wasn’t giving me peace in that stage of my life was because I was reliant on someone else’s interpretation of what Gurbani means. It is so, so important to understand Gurbani for yourself. It takes work, but it’s worth it! I had zero understanding of Gurbani when I started out - anyone can learn it!

@@francoiselemeur7325 Brother you can ask anything about the Punjabi language and script. The Punjabi is the spoken language and it has predominantly 2 scripts; Gurmukhi and Shahmukhi. Shahmukhi script (used in western Punjab in Pakistan) shares its underpinnings with the urdu, Arabic and Persian script. While Gurmukhi ( The main dominant script used in East Punjab in India) had been invented by the Sikh Gurus. So obviously Sikhs and Punjabi Hindus use Gurmukhi script. It has 35 letters.

We are making this more complex than necessary, similar to many other religions. Sikhi is meant to be straightforward, ensuring that it is accessible for everyone to learn from. Additionally, fanatic elements are transforming it into a rigid and inflexible belief system, straying from its original simplicity and openness.

As an Italian-American with zero background in the Punjabi/Gurmukhi language but with a strong interest in Sikhism, I find it very frustrating that so much of the Sikh "conversation" is behind a high wall. It's just not practical for all budding Sikhis to learn Gurmukhi. The gurudwara that I attend in Jersey City, N.J. has a very large Punjabi immigrant congregation so even communicating with people at langar is sometimes impossible, let alone at kirtan, katha, etc. I was raised a Roman Catholic. Prior to the Vatican II council in the early 60s, the mass (the Catholic religious service) was said in Latin - a dead language (of course Punjabi is NOT a dead language, but...) - and this was correctly deemed to be a huge barrier to Catholics and potential converts alike so the council agreed to let every congregation say the mass/conduct all business in the "vernacular" (local languages). With Sikhism being so bound up with Punjab/Punjabi, and the persecution that Sikhs have endured in India that promoted the Sikh diaspora, it's understandable why Sikhism is so deeply attached to the Punjabi language and culture but that is undeniably a huge drag on the ability to spread what is inherently a universal message. I think/hope that a Sikh version of the Catholic Vatican II is vital and maybe even necessary for the dispersion and eventually even the survival of Sikhism. I agree with you.. but believe that the translation should be correct. The incorrect translations can lead to wrong interpretations. The correct translation is important because Adi Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is not a collection of stories. It is philosophy, the concepts; so correct translation is mandatory. I am not saying that if someone does know the Gurbani language he should not be a Sikh. In this regard I agree with Satpalji and he has conveyed this message. Moreover read another comment in response to this video.

As someone who is Punjabi, I didn’t understand Gurbani at ALL when I started out getting into Sikhi. Me knowing Punjabi had no bearing on my ability to understand Gurbani. But now I can understand the majority of what I’m reading or listening to. The perfection of Gurbani is that it’s almost a language within itself. The more you engage with it and immerse yourself in it, the more you begin to understand it. Translations help of course, but don’t ever stop there. You CAN learn to understand Gurbani, and you will see how much it’s worth it to make the effort to do so.

@@jasleenkaur9978 The absolute biggest help was listening to Kirtan, especially attending live Kirtan. I would use Sikhitothemax to sing along and keep reading the translations at the same time. I didn’t try to understand word for word, just to get the gist of the Pangti, and to feel the meanings while singing. I would do my best to focus really hard the whole time. Eventually I started picking up on word meanings just by getting the gist of the Pangti, and eventually I started to listen to the Kirtan and focus on understanding without using Sikhitothemax. I was doing this every single day. It takes focus, time, and dedication and it is 1000% worth it. The bliss you get from being able to feel the message of Gurbani is incomparable.

This is interesting and I disagree with some of things you say. The language of Gurbani is called ‘Sant Bhasha’ or a collection of various languages and dialects. The only way to truly understand the scriptures is by learning Gurmukhi. You can try with English or any other language translations and get close but it’s just not the same. We should encourage every Sikh to learn Gurmukhi moving forward. Also, Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s writings are in Sant Bhasha, not Punjabi. Baba Farid lived 300 years before Guru Nanak and his bani is more easily comprehendable because it’s actually written in Punjabi.

I agree and Punjabi isn't my first language either. Even if you don't understand it, just hearing the Shabads in Gurbani still has a positive effect because they are the actual words of the Guru. Also, the way that Gurbani was arranged into raags which can be sang can't be easily replicated in another language. Even though translation is good to understand, it doesn't feel the same or carry the same intensity compared to the source language.

Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee is not written in "different languages". Gurbani is written in Gurmukhi, The Guru's Language, which is not Punjabi, Hindi, Sanskrit, or any other language. Saying that you can "read" Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee in other languages is like saying you can make palak paneer with lettuce and cheddar cheese. Yes, you can read the interpretations or transliterations of Gurbani in different languages, but it is not close to the impact that Gurbani has. Messages always get lost in translation, and some translations are way off from the actual meanings. With regards to meanings, people don't need to understand Guru Sahib to experience Them and it's impossible for someone to say that they can fully explain Gurbani, as Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee is an endless ocean. When I got into Sikhi, I spent about 8 months just reading translations because I was afraid to read Gurmukhi. However, I then started reading Gurbani in Gurmukhi and the feeling of peace was unexplainable. When I was blessed with Amrit, that peace converted into the strongest drug imaginable. Amrit, Nitnem, and Rehat are the beginning of a journey into Sikhi, everything before is a prelude (which is important too and shouldn't be disregarded). Apologies if I hurt anyone with anything I said as that is not my intention. At the end of the day, Maharaj knows best and may They guide us all along Their Path.

Good common sense in this video. Dogma destroys the minds ability to reason. Just as important to avoid fanaticism as it destroys the hearts ability to have compassion. Seek the wisdom of the Gurus in the language You best understand. ♾💚🌞

Its not OK...do not try and absolve punjabi parents of the duty and responsibility of teaching punjabi language to their kids just because they don't have time and energy for it or its inconvenient for them...sikhism can never be understood and imbibed the same way if one doesn't know the language...religion, culture and language are very intimately connected...so do your part and spread and propagate the language...teach your kids punjabi...bring them to Punjab often...theyll naturally fall in love with the religion and culture...

I am American and I am an Amritdhari Gursikh, the city where I live there is only 1 Gurudwara and the only other 2 Gurudwaras in my state is 4 hours away from me. The Gurudwara I used to go to allowed me to do sewa until they found out I am not Punjabi. I then asked if I can please enroll in their a Gurmukhi classes because I want to learn Gurmukhi and they never replied to my request they also never signed me up for the lessons. So I stopped going to the Gurudwara bcz I felt as if I was not welcomed there. My Fiancé is Punjabi but speaks little english and it is difficult for him to translate and teach me Punjabi or Gurmukhi. So I have to read Bani in English or Spanish which are my languages. I sometimes listen to Bani in Gurmukhi bcz even though I don’t understand it my soul n heart feels good when I listen to it. In my Ardas every day I always include and ask God to please send someone who would help me learn the language of my Gurus.

The ego is the beauty of life but gone unchecked and only identifying with it is to identify with mortality falsehood. Our body is the ego but our true essence is the One, that is within all. Language doesn't matter my dear brother, you're so right. Thank you so much for your beautiful teaching. To fallow my own beeing is not easy, especially on this earth. From those teachers you should take whatever response to your inner self, that's what's buddhism is trying to transfer. This way isn't meant to be easy, but once you understood that it's turning into your devine being of yourself. Thank you so much, to be like others is easy, but to separate yourself to who you're is not meant to be easy. Take whatever resonates in love and harmony to convert it, to yourself and to other beeings if they ask you how you did it. Maybe it helps, maybe not, we don't know. But in our own hearts we know what love response to ourselves.

Each language has its own rhythm and resonance. What makes Gurmukhi special is that it’s pronunciation hits a specific sequence formula of meridian points in your mouth which then get the rest of your body to vibrate a specific way to attain a state of meditation faster. It’s wonderful to read the meaning, but it’s is extremely important to actually pronounce Gurbani as best you can because of the vibration. I’ve had instances where I heard a Shabad and began signing with it I had no true mental understanding of what it meant but I felt its meaning and even asked my friend who is a learned Sikh is this Shabad saying the following and they were like yea that exactly the overall message of the Shabad. So even though our minds have a need to understand, the Shabad is so powerful that it can communicate even beyond the language barrier.

VERY VERY WRONG message in this video.

I highly value the original Punjabi language because there is no greater way to express your thoughts than your native tongue. And that’s what the Gurus did. And that’s why I value the English translations, because it will touch me deeper in my native tongue. I know some things must be lost in translation. But I think it’s silly to let language divide or separate us. Guru Nanak didn’t let anything else divide. Caste, religion, gender. Why language?

Thank you for this video Satpal 🙏 I have thought of this many many times regarding what "I am missing" not knowing Punjabi. What you have said here makes total sense. God does not penalize our spirituality because of not knowing a language. What is important is our connection and how much we want to deepen our relationship with God. However learning Punjabi is definitely a huge plus. It's like watching a movie in it's original language versus it being translated. The translation is fine, however it does not capture everything that the original language brings out. Learning Punjabi is still on my "To Do" list 🙏🙏

Sikhi is universal and is not limited to Punjabi speakers. The message is universal. However, the problem is that the scripture has been very poorly translated into other languages. There is a reason that Guru Granth Sahib has many many languages within it today (regardless if the script is one). However, it still needs to be translated well, and we have failed the world in that. For example, the very mool mantar itself, or the famous salok "Pavan guru paani pita mata dharat mahat" are all mistranslated, which makes it harder for those who dont speak punjabi (or other languages).

This reiterates the important of what Guru Nanak emphasised upon, which is also registered in nitnem or japji sahib “ Akal Purkh “ a divine who is time less who was not born or died and surrounds us every where all we need to do is to calm down to surrender to his will. Gurbani is not timeless as it was born through Guru’s collective wisdom, hence it’s relevance as a guru is as good as any Sanskrit Veda. These all can be misinterpreted, mispronounced or misspelled that could lead to a lot of conflict. What the preacher is trying to convey is very close to what Guru Nanak emphasised. Guru’s teachings have to be taught in a more practical way to the world than being prophesied through texts. Yes, Gurbani is definitely very peaceful, it does brings around a lot of contextual similarities in our lives around.

I do respect your opinion but I have to disagree with you on this. Gurmukhi should be very important for one to learn so they can read Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Dasam Granth, understand katha and much more. Learning Gurmukhi takes practice like anything else in life and it should be encouraged by every Sikh to master Gurmukhi so you can continue doing akand pahts, kathas etc. the Guru Granth Sahib cannot be fully translated to English without missing key information. I encourage everyone who wants to follow Sikhi to learn your Gurmukhi and muharni, it just takes practice and time. An Akand Paht can never be done in any other language expect Gurmukhi. And this is from someone who didn't know Gurmukhi two years ago to now reading paht, don't be discouraged to learn Gurmukhi it will come a long way on getting you to the Guru's path

There is a contradiction that must be resolved regarding Gurbani for individuals who dont understand Punjabi that well, that is its beautiful rhyming and sound remain in the original Gurmukhi and this doesn't exist into the English translation, i encourage those to read the English translations to understand the actual meanings of the Gurbani and then recite the same Gurbani in Gurmukhi, best of both worlds

I am from west Malaysia, a Punjabi sikh.. i prefer to read sikhism knowledge in ENGLISH.. my spoken punjabi not good, but can understand a little when people are talking.. i prefer English.. I know sometimes people do have diffeculty when translating punjabi to english.. Only thing we suppose to be careful is some foreign thoughts are trying to penetrate into sikhism thoughts... Our younger sikh generations are very weak at sikhism knowledge.. they are prone in future to be converted to other religions.. we can see this happening this days very common, whole punjabi family converted to other religions, i had seen that a lot.. The real stories are within, not outside stories.. too much paying attention on Externalism won t take us far in Spirituality.. Every sikh are talking bout NAAM.. But till today i never came across anybody who can explain NAAM in terms of sounds and melodies.. i don t see any mystics talking or giving lectures in temples.. all is dried up this days in sikhism.. too much going Externalism Another BIGGEST CANCER in sikh communities this days is Pride and Ego.. this preventing them going forward

Tulsidas did the same by taking the valmiki Ramayan and put in form for ordinary people to read and understand
@crypton_8l87

And Sanskrit was the ordinary man's language in those days. If you don't believe this then consider how Valmiki spontaneously broke into poetry on seeing the Krauncha bird (crane) getting killed. He expressed his Shok in metric verse and was surprised at his own first composition (Shloka). Thankfully his student Bharadwaj was qith him and committed it to memory as was the practice in those days. Adikavi Valmiki was a robber before he sought his own enlightenment. Ved Vyas, the compiler/editor of the Vedas, Krishna Dwaipayana, was the son of a sage and a fisher-woman - Parashar and Satyavati. They all simply spoke Sanskrit. Even as recently as Adi Shankara Bhagavatpada, (post Buddha Gautama) Sanskrit was the unifying common language of India. Shankaracharya was born in Kalady, Kerala and traveled across the length and breadth of India meeting and debating with great scholars and philosophers all over the country. They all spoke Sanskrit.

After watching the video I cam say the title of the video is misleading!! What you have tried to differentiate is between Punjabi CULTURAL LANGUAGE and language of Adi Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. ( i.e. Gubani Language). Unfortunately, all most all Sikhs in India can not differentiate between these two, therefore, for them learning Punjabi language is equivalent to learning Gurbani language. There might be many Sikhs (including myself) who understand the difference but never say it loudly because there is an onslaught on Punjabi language as language of unsofisticated people (read it as stupids) by the majority class in this region. I have understood what he has tried to convey the message because I know both the languages and I know how the meaning of Gurbani get changed with incorrect translations. In fact, I wonder why and how is saying all this when he himself has emphasized the importance of langauge while he was explaing the Jap bani!!! Rather I am perplexed. When we will understand the difference between Gurbani and Bani Guru, we will realise the importance of learning the language of Guru's Bani.
