We’ve been set up for failure when it comes to our metabolic health.
Eighty-eight percent of people are metabolically unhealthy, and since the 1920s we’ve shamed them into believing it’s their fault-that they should just eat fewer calories and exercise more.
But the real culprit is sugar and the processed foods that contain it. The majority of foods on our market shelves contain insane amounts of added sugar and high-fructose corn syrup-ingredients that literally slow down our metabolism and turn on our internal fat storage switch.
I sat down with Dr. Robert Lustig to talk about the problem with the “calories in, calories out” model, and understanding the energy-balance model of weight management.

@@harrys.3165 My son died from an illness which was not diagnosed until after his death at age 36. He went to doctor after doctor and they prescribed pills to make the symptoms go away, but never identified identified the illness or recommended any procedure to deal with the root cause of his illness. (benign tumor of the pituitary) This is now happening to me, yet I am old. No person can afford to be ignorant about his/her own medical conditions, because most doctors are not only ignorant, but also they do not care... and the worst ones are doctors because of the money... and I have evidence for that as well. At NO time in my life, did a doctor ever tell me to avoid ALL !!! polyunsaturated fat (vegetable oil) as well as ALL !!! sugar and easy digestible carbohydrates (potatoes, rice, noodles, bread). In fact most doctors until today advocate to avoid eating red meat and animal fat... the food pyramid. This is 100% false. Thanks god for people like Rob Lustig and others who shout from the rooftops and also bury the medical establishment with scientific evidence, but they are drowned out by ignorant doctors and corrupt food companies. I was ignorant about what to do about my diabetes 2 (and all the conditions which it causes) until a week ago. Pure coincidence, that I came across a video on youtube by Dr Lustig. Now I spend 8-12 hours a day educating myself about the issue. The information is there, but I did not know that it was there and years of misinformation made me accept the exact opposite of the truth. To be sure, I have no way of knowing the truth one way or another, since this is not my expertise, but I MUST make an effort to get educated or die. Clearly whatever I am doing for 20 years is NOT working. I wasted 20 years of my life, because diabetes 2 is very much a disabling disease. To answer your question: I understand, that people on a vegetable diet can do rather well, however what I have learned so far, this is not the right approach for a diabetic 2. Nothing short of a 100% carnivore diet will reverse this condition. People report measurable results within weeks and a complete reversal (A1C < 5.6) within 3 month. To be sure, a diabetic can never go back to his old bad eating habits or it is all back to "square one". There is however still some disagreements among scientists about the exact cause of "high insulin". Like everywhere else in life, cause and effect cannot easy be determined. What causes "high insulin"? too much glucose in the blood, but where does this come from? too much refined sugar and carbohydrates. But many people do just fine eating exclusively carbohydrates. It starts with liver disease. But what causes liver disease? Some scientists blame excessive Omega 6 which is abundant in polyunsaturated fat (vegetable oil)... other scientist blame fructose alone. Of course there is alcohol... In fact, there are even some scientists who claim that vegetables contains far too many toxins to be considered to be food, and then there are the vegans who say the exact opposite. One thing is established in my mind: Whatever I was doing so far is not working... let's try something else. Thanks god my brain is still working. At my last visit my doctor prescribed XANEX (I did not fill the prescription) to make me less depressed about my condition. WTF does this solve? Make the symptoms go away, but ignore the cause.

Not strictly true. You have to separate the doctors from their respective professional bodies. The vast amount of work and effort to become qualified in the majority of cases, is motivated by wishing to care for their fellow humans. It is the profession which has been hyjacked by the profit hungry pharma ( and food) organisations who fund medical academia. The sicker the population, the more profit they make. Food and drug administration ???...says it all. Recent events have simply exposed this reality, and many doctors , like people from many walks of life, are starting to wake up as a result.

The biggest lie in medicine, food, pharmaceutical and government is that they have your best interests in mind. Quite the opposite. After I fixed my health this year, reversed type 2 diabetes and was able to no longer need any medication, my doctor was very upset with me. He had been telling me to lose weight and exercise for 12 years and now that I actually fixed my health, he was upset. He told me there is nobsuch thing as reversing type 2 diabetes, even though my A1C went from 6.7 to 5.4 in 4 months and has stayed that was now for 9 months. All test results are normal except that they flag ketones as bad, which many disagree with. Carnivore lifestyle was my cure. My doctor has since attempted to convince me that I still need prescription medication even if my measurements are normal. I asked for the double-blind research using empirical measurements that support his position. He could not produce it. People are brainwashed and corrupted by money to keep people on prescriptions forever using the lie of making you healthy. Diet made me healthy once I learned what worked for me.

What I got from this- - A calorie is still a calorie. - Excess protein burns more calories in the process of conversion to energy (still a unit of energy). - insoluble Fibre can't be used as energy so those (minima) amounts of calories don't count. - trans fats don't fully break down (doesn't say if the units of energy are still utilized the same as other fats- 9 calories per gm.) Conclusion- keep your insoluble Fibre high and protein high, and your total caloric maintenance would be a little higher than in you didn't. So basically calories are still calories. Just eat more protein and Fibre.

Thank you, you are the only one here that understands the definition of a calorie is just a unit of energy. It is source that will change the absorption since we metabolize and digest food in different ways. Like the porter house analogy even tough it takes energy to breakdown , the amount and “excess” will create a surplus of energy then some will be converted to adipose tisse. The almond analogy only explains the way we absorb certain molecules. So of the calories absorbed they are going to act the same since is a unit of energy. By the laws of thermodynamic a calorie is a calorie.

@@nikyva89 Because of the fructose in table sugar. table sugar is 50/50% glucose and fructose Every cell in the body can metabolise glucose - it's the energy of life! but fructose can ONLY be metabolised in the liver and the liver can only handle a small amount at a time. It's not designed that way, because in nature, there are no big amounts of sugar or fructose in a small timeframe. When eating fruits, due to the fibre the sugar is absorbed way slower that it isn't that much of a problem. When all the fructose hits the liver at once, other enzymes are activated which in the end causes a fatty liver, visceral fat, high blood preassure, diabetes type 2 and all the other things that come from that. back to the calories. If you eat carbohydrate, they get broken down to simples sugars. Those sugars are the fuel of every cell in your body. The body can store ecess amounts in the form of glycogen. Like 400kcal in the muscles and 100kcal in the liver. but what if those stores are full and you keep eating carbs? They get converted into fat - the longer lasting energy storage. So, if you wanna eat carbs, you HAVE to be physical active, to use some of your stored glycogen. Then, esating carbs will fill up those stores again. if your stores are permanently full, then all those carbs get converted into fat. And why all that? Because if the sugar level in the blood gets too high, those sogars crystalize at your hormones and render them disfunctional. So, you cannot function, you will die. Therefore, we have insulin to get these sogars out of the bloodstream. For example directly into the cells, into the mitochondria to burn when we need energy to move. Or into the glycogen stores. And if those places are full, insulin makes then get converted into fat, because it has nowhere else to go. That is a very(!) simplified explanation and there are many(!) variables, like gut microbiom, the current state of health, hormones levels, insulin resistancy (sorry i am not a native english speaker) etc.

In a conversation with my family doctor, I remarked that my mother had died - 20-odd years before - from a smoking related condition. She had quit some years before, but clearly too late. BUT.... she'd been a non-smoker as a girl! So why did she start smoking? On a f**king doctor's advice !!!!! She was of a 'nervous disposition' and her doctor thought smoking might help. My current doctor laughed and pointed out that - of course - we know better now. I wasn't having it. My point wasn't that my mother's doctor had THOUGHT smoking might be good for her! He'd KNOWN IT FOR A FACT! For god's sake - he was a DOCTOR!!! So - I asked my own doctor. What did HE know right now - as a fact - that might eventually kill me? He declined to answer. A very interesting and thought-provoking presentation. I have some questions.. 1) is the recommendation of 1g protein per day for every kg of body weight, meaningful? 2) processed foods are very bad for you.. OK, but what aspects of processing are the dangerous ones? I've heard doctors say that oven chips are "ultra-processed" why? They contain just potatoes and sunflower oil. Is the heating of the sunflower oil producingt trans-fats. If so, all frying is dangerous.

@@philipsamways562 most plant based oils are extremely unhealthy and are only sold because they are cheap! Same thing with corn and grain. Not to make you healthy, just to feed a large population (keep them alive) and keep the profits. Look up the Omega 6 fats (very bad, pro inflementory!) and Omega 3 fats (healthy, anti-inflementory). Oils like sunflower oil has a terrible ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3, thetrefore it is very unhealthy. The "problem" with processing is, that you do the job of your gut - you pre-break down the food and your gut absorbs it faster --> higher spikes in blood sugar --> higher spikes in insulin --> more fat. And that was just the first step - cooking or even make the individual molecule size smaller (f.e. Apple --> smoothie)

Great video and thank you Dr. Lustig. A short time ago I moved to another town and I hired one of only a handful of doctors there. I hired him because he ran a satellite clinic of a big hospital chain located about 25 miles away from the town I moved to. I was already on 3 medications and after seeing him twice, he raised the number of medications that I had to take to 7 ! He then wanted me to come in every 3 months for my diabetes blood work. Every time that I went in for blood work, he would have me drive to the main hospital to see this specialist or that specialist. I put my foot down and skipped one of these "assigned appointments ". Three weeks later, I called the doctor's office and requested a refill be called in for 1 of the new medicines that he had put me on. I was informed that getting a refill would not be happening until I completed the "assigned appointment " at the main hospital that I had skipped! I had enough. I told them to shove it! This doctor and his staff were just milking their patients like cows but instead of milk they wanted to milk every dollar out of their patients that they could to fill the Main Hospital's coporate coffers!

As for your opinion about polio: it's correct. Several diseases known to us in the past are now curable, we can prevent the worst in some cases. I also think it is fair to say that it is NOT the whole food industry at fault, rather the ultra-processed food industry to blame. Farmers, butchers, greengrocers, dairies and grocery stores are not to blame for toxic “foods”. Basic food items like meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy, fruits, vegetables and basic carbs like bread and potatoes are not to blame. What is to blame is when greedy corporations take those basic foods and convert them into poisons using ultra processing, aka “value adding”. For example, when they take basic, cheap grains and convert them into extruded cereals or hydrogenated oils. Corn is simple enough unless it is made into high fructose corn syrup. While government subsidies are used to fund conglomerates to subsidise cheap foods, it will not end anytime soon. (Looking at you, America ). Only a grassroots return to local family farmers, local markets and stores will give us the actual nutrition we need. And it bolsters food security, as we witnessed during the lockdowns.

So American culture is based on two foods, corn and wheat. If you are overweight, they conclude this is the cause. Well, how could it not be. But are carbs a worse source of calories than other calorie sources? Now in terms of calories in, calories out, I started in a gym in January, lost zero in 3 months. By March I started heavy bench weight lifting, meaning as heavy as I could lift, and began losing weight. First time in 30 years. The decline is erratic, it is not linear, there are pauses, but with zero identifiable adjustment to my diet, I lose around 2 lbs a month. Down about 16 pounds. Now in terms of being prediabetic, it has no medical meaning. You are diabetic or you are not. There is no transitional state. For me, statins reduced cholesterol somewhat, but several months into weight lifting I had my physical with my cholesterol checked, and for the first time in 15 years it had collapsed 30%, a level never seen in that recent record. Reduced sugar? Stopped sugary drinks, lost zero. Stopped cleaning my plate, lost zero. Did walks and biking, lost zero. Stopped excessive candy and cookies, lost zero. Don't ever each much bread anyway, has no meaning in my diet. I don't eat pasta very often, maybe once in a month or two. Lost zero. So, heavy weight training, lost weight. Calories in, calories out. Build more muscle for faster metabolism to burn more calories. What most studies do is run for about 3 months on various diet and exercise programs, but this is not how the body functions where it can pause metabolically that long, so they don't say much relevant to me. That and half are metastudies reviewing groups of prior studies.

The medical definition of the fetus is "unborn baby". Docs call it that on week 9 as all organs have formed at this point. Till week nine it is called an embryo. Upon fertilisation it is called a zygote. No doubt that abortion is at the core of this culture of death. And for those that escape that route and dare birth hralthy babies, then comes "safe and effective" to ruin perfect creations. All of this mostly with the consent of the tricked parents and the ignorance of criminal white coats. @@clabianco1

They aren't trained on the subject of diet and nutrition. A few months ago, I was flabbergasted to watch a podcast of a couple of primary care providers (PCPs) discussing how diet/nutrition was only a FOUR HOUR block of instruction in their entire medical training. It was awakening for me that I then understood why my doctor asked me if I wanted a referral to a dietician. I said no, because I thought he was being lazy. After watching that podcast, I was wrong about him. Perhaps, the PCPs with great knowledge of nutrition learned it on their own initiative, or attended formal training. He ask if I wanted to see a nutritionist because my weight was increasing with every visit (6 months). Also, some lab markers were going in the wrong direction with the weight increases. After that podcast of enlightenment, I began to educate myself on diet and nutrition. This DOCTOR's podcasts are a main source of my education.

@@thomashilson4158 What's even more shocking is the dieticians often don't have a clue about true healthy eating either (they're also corrupted by pharma). When I tried to explain to one dietician that I was on a carnivore diet and didn't need sugar whatsoever, she insisted that people's brains need sugar to function so consuming sugar was essential to good health.

@@meerkat1954 I don't recall the name of the documentary; but, it revealed how, in the mid 1900's, the sugar industry paid off the scientific establishment (and government), to promote sugar; even though, they knew of the damaging effects, and vilify salt. Now, look where that's got us, a diabetes epidemic. I hope the forecast is wrong that by 2050, half the teenage population will be pre-diabetic/diabetic. In a separate podcast, a doctor made an interesting point, that our ancestors DID NOT have a diet of sugar; although vegetation, with its carbohydrate content, IS sugar. I'm sure theirs weren't processed. His point was to dispell the myth that the brain "needs" sugar. He went on to say the SHORT life expectancy of our ancestors, as science suggests, had to do with many other factors. Diet WAS a factor; but, it was lack thereof, not low sugar intake.

It is the same molecule but fruits don’t harm people when eaten (not talking about juices) and they come with a bit load of fibres too. On a balanced diet fruits can be eaten reasonably

Good effort Mary! Slow and steady must be the best way. If I eat a little, I tend to cave and eat more. When I eat nothing at all, I think I lose about 1 pound a day, or a bit less. I do an occasional 7 day or 5 day fast and the weight falls off. It's just a bit of disciple, I think. I walk for about an hour a day when I am motivated. It all helps me feel a lot better. Conversely, if I stop the discipline, I feel markedly worse.

After watching many videos about this , I finally understand why 'A calorie is not a Calorie' , and why this is so important regarding the obesity Pandemic. Food Manufacturers' insistance that excess food consumption is the only reason for this Pandemic , relies on the bogus Principal of a calorie being a calorie.The reasons why this Principal is bogus must be explained to the Courts and exposed as a deliberate deception contributing to obesity/ metabolic illness and Human Suffering on a scale too great to ignore.
@saintsone7877
@saintsone7877 Жыл бұрын
There are many, many reasons for the Obesity Pandemic. 1. The pyramid they invented in the late 1960's early 1970's was the beginning. They (medical authorities) told us eating foods as per that pyramid was a healthy diet. Yet it is not hard to discredit this but people would not listen to those debunking the pyramid as it allowed people to eat foods that are NOT good for them but taste great. The pyramid is only good for elite athletes training and in competition and body builders when bulking up. Notice a body builder switches away from the pyramid when they are nearing competition and are beginning the cutting process. 2. The propensity towards fast foods and the growth in outlets allowing people to not have to cook yet to make that food taste good they used cooking oils, salts, sugars etc that piled the calories on. Add the upselling from small portions to larger portions at a considerable price differential people fell for the marketing and purchased far more calories than they needed and guaranteed obesity was the result. 3. The push to get women into the workforce and independent of their partners financially meant housewives were coming home tired and unwilling to prepare and cook wholesome meals where ingredients were controlled and healthy and tv dinners etc became the new rage. 4. Prior to the 1960's most jobs had an element of hard labour involved apart from office work type occupations. But the shapers of economies began automating many processes where machines did the menial tasks(read labour component) and humans pushed a button. Farmers were sold on all the new machinery that increased production and decreased the labour involved as they ended up sitting down most of the day driving these great mechanical wonders. 5. During this period no-one reduced their food intake, water was replaced by sweetened sodas as the standard drink and soda became a daily staple rather than a weekly/monthly treat as it was in the 1950's. Combine a high food intake ladened with more calories, less hard manual labour, and beers and sodas becoming the standard liquid refreshment and we have a recipe for increased waistlines, diabetes, cholesterol etc and all the associated health issues. I nearly forgot people also reduced their exercise during these times as children became glued to TV rather than playing outdoors and adults had home videos etc keep them indoors more seated down and consuming and drinking as they watched screens. 6. Household appliances went through a period of rapid development and more and more labour intensive tasks around the home for both men/women were replaced by machines that reduced the time taken to do tasks and less actual labour reducing caloric burn. Coupled with more eating/drinking this reduction in caloric burn resulted in slow weight gain. 7. Who can forget all the gurus on TV talk shows were advocating a total change in the way society operated. Fitness gurus sprang up everywhere with TV programs, gyms had all sorts of aerobics etc programs yet no-one addressed the caloric intake/burn. It was you can still eat everything you love just exercise more for 30 mins a day. I could continue but those blaming Food Manufacturers etc are simply passing on the blame that belongs with each and every one of us. YOU are responsible for what goes into your mouth as food, drink, sweets, etc etc.NO-ONE else is responsible for YOUR poor decisions. Stop listening to the "experts" who all make money from their solutions and get back to home cooked meals, regular exercise, reduce your sodas, beers etc and drink water instead and eat fresh foods cooked the same day with a minimum of additives that you yourself control the quantities of. It really is that simple people. PERSONAL responsibility rather than its someone else's fault. It may be an old saying but man/woman up and do what YOU know is right rather than eating manufactured rubbish and blaming others. You are what YOU eat. The buck starts and stops with you. Take control of your life and ignore those that profit from their advice to you. They do not have YOUR interest at heart but their own wallets interest.
