That's if you're lucky to have lane markings at all. It's not just pothole repairs the government is scrimping on, but lane markings generally, not just on roundabouts. It's a sorry state for a country, supposedly the fifth-richest, to not afford proper road maintenance. Go to Germany, for example, and the roads are 1000% better. Still, after Brexit, we are desperately trying to become a third-world country, I suppose...

The problem with lanes is lack of signs ahead of junctions. Road markings just before a junction are useless when cars are obscuring them. Leads to confusion on approach unless you know the junction. As for roundabouts specifically people dont indicate correctly or spiral outwards correctly.

Just remember the 12oclock rule. If your exit is past 12oclock on the clock face you'll want the right lane. If it's straight on (and there is a middle lane) you'll want the middle one. If you're going left, it's the left lane! Once I had that locked into my head the rest followed pretty quickly.

You can barely see those lane markings, it would be impossible (and unusable) in the rain at night, or even at 5pm during winter months. It’s all well and good the UK designing, and seemingly being proud of, some of the most complex road systems in the world, multi lane spiral roundabouts some with traffic lights, some with roads actually going through the middle. However, if you’re going to pursue this policy of insanely complex junctions, make sure you have the funds to keep the paint fresh. My guess is, like everything else, road marking paint is probably more environmentally friendly these days and is water based or something, so washes away after 6 months.

At that particular roundabout your best strategy is to choose the middle lane, which is marked for A463 only, as that should leave nobody in any doubt about your intended exit. The problem with using the left lane is twofold. First, that lane has a choice of two destinations, Coseley Road and Black Country Route (A463) so the traffic always tails back in that lane, but traffic moves more smoothly if drivers can join the island from each of the three lanes when a gap arises. Second, when you set off onto the roundabout in the left lane, you allow the traffic joining from Coseley Road to imagine that you might be leaving on the first exit (Coseley Road) and when you keep tight on the left - as you must - a car ready to join from Coseley Road may have its view of you blocked and be tempted to pull out in front of you. Just review from 1:41 to 1:44 and see how the black car can't see you because of the white one and almost comes out into your path. In fact, they stopped so late that they encroached on the island and left you with only just enough space to complete your manoeuvre safely. Look how close you are to their front quarter at 1:46. You simply don't invite that problem when using the middle lane. Defensive driving makes life easier for everyone.

Yes - but a lot depends on the actual layout. There are some roundabouts where the left lane is left exit only, with the next one (lane 2) being something else, either straight on only, or either way, or it might widen out into two lanes on the roundabout, and so on. A typical example of this is around 51°52'56.3"N 2°14’15.8"W . In that case, the “left only” lane arrows start a long way back, westbound on the A40 - mainly aimed at rush hour traffic, I suspect. Always pays to learn the route if unfamiliar, as it varies a lot - especially if they have just altered it all! Of course, lane lines tend to fade out due to lack of maintenance, and painted arrows are alright when there is not much traffic!
@jhareng2 жыл бұрын
It dont help when councils dont alter the older proper driving layouts on actual island but tell you to go to lane 2 to go straight on or right. Then find stranded in lane 2 round the island when vehicles already moving out because your not in lane 1. Same applies round unmarked islands wide enough for 2 vehicles, self righteous instead of waiting in lane 2 right lane to turn right come up on inside and take what would be lane 1 round the island where you cant get over. Also seen them from lane 1 pull straight in front to block the correct procedure round island.
@darkdonzaloog2 жыл бұрын
Nearby here theres a roundabout with the most unnatural driving lines. Before it was changed the only issue was the lines were faded but when it was redone they changed the layout. I do think theres a lot of roundabouts with really degraded road markings which does make it far harder to figure out at a glance where the edges of the lanes are.

The problem with passing a roundabout exit when in the left lane is that a car just behind you, having travelled further round the roundabout, may cross into you. I've always thought that the best approach is to move to the outside lane of the roundabout just after the exit before you intend to leave. That may not be the way it is in the highway code but it'll stop cars driving into each other.

I drive this exact roundabout all the time on the way to work and whenever I go in the furthest right lane to go to Bilston, I always get stuck because there's someone in the middle lane going right :/
@RexxSchneider2 жыл бұрын
That's because the approach road to the island has two lanes initially, with the right-hand lane splitting to form the middle and right lanes. Anyone wanting to go to Millfields Road (A4039), rather than Wolverhampton Road or Bilston High Street knows that they need to be in the left hand lane at the next island and so uses the middle lane to make the right turn. If you don't do that, cars will join from your left and make it impossible for you to get across to the left lane before the next roundabout.

The trouble is there is no uniformity on roundabout lanes in the UK. The left lane can be turn left only, or turn left and straight on. Likewise the right lane can be right only, right and straight on, and if there is a middle lane, or more, it can be straight on only, or both, and tie this in with worn out, or last minute road markings, and if you new the the road you soon be in the wrong lane. Many roundabouts in France filter down to one lane before the roundabout, and one lane round, so guess what, it's impossible to be it the wrong lane.... Dead simple, dead safe, and everything keeps on flowing.

That was my thought too. Only takes one to assume you are turning left ( exacerbated by drivers who indicate too early on a roundabout) then you have a collision and zero time to avoid it.
@TR-Oguz78 Жыл бұрын
To be honest, I dont know if my point is stupid or not, but roundabouts that have more than 1 lane always seemed to confuse me. In my opinion, all roundabouts should only have 1 lane, so that confusion like these dont happen. Also from the drivers perspective, it can be a bit difficult to change lanes while inside the roundabout, because while your constantly turning, you often lose visibility of cars to your left or right side, which could cause an accident. Also…Lets say your heading towards a roundabout with multiple lanes. A car is driving in the middle and you proceed to go forward, because you know the first lane is free to drive on. What if that car from the middle decides to change lanes and switch to the outer lane right next to the exit or entrance, also causing a larger risk of accidents. Because in their perspective, they have the right of way, once inside the roundabout. I understand that roundabouts with multiple lanes may be more efficient for roads ahead, which also have multiple lanes heading towards different directions, but if you only have 1 lane there shouldnt be a bigger risk once exiting the roundabout, to change lanes according to whichever direction you may need to go to. Anyone agree? Or am I just retarded?

You are simpleminded to think the problem is this simple. There's a Lot going on when driving from roadsigns to roadmarkings, lights, nearby traffic, traffic up ahead, planning ahead, operating the vehicle, etc. On top of all that, you need to stay in lane too. It's not as simple as you make out.

Excellent video but a few comments. Should you not be signaling right on entry? When you pass the first exit, signal left. Before turning off you need to look over your shoulder to check you are not running a motor cyclist or bicycle off the road. Extra points The speed I think should be slower to take everything in And why isn’t filtering used? The car that almost came out should be allowed out. Roundabouts are dangerous places as are cross roads. You need never to hurry and be able to stop if needed. A bit of extra time and care at a hazard point isn’t going to affect the time of your journey. Have an accident and you lose time and it costs.
@FlyBoyGrounded2 жыл бұрын
Why would you signal right if you’re going straight ahead? Left if taking the first exit, no signal until you’re leaving if you’re taking the second exit and right if you’re going past two exits or more until you indicate left to exit. Roundabouts with five or more roads need special consideration.
@jfryer4852 жыл бұрын
@@FlyBoyGrounded Yes, it does seem odd and I expect few use this idea which is part of some countries Highway Code, The idea is you are NOT leaving at the first exit and so for this reason you can signal clearly your intent. If you turn off at the first exit then you signal for sure. When you want the next exit then you signal as you pass the previous exit. Signals are good and necessary but do need to be used with care. I passed one exit and needed the next and signaled, but the person at this exit thought I was taking his exit and pulled out in front of me. So you have to wait until you are past both the exit and cars impatient to get out before signaling to exit at the next exit. Roundabouts can be dangerous places where you need to be careful and slow and even this upsets drivers who think everyone knows the roundabout they are on and needs to travel at break neck speed. With TV ads for just about everything, I think a bit of time on road courtesy and the Highway Code would save lives and machines and probably tempers too. I have devised my own system of defence which means touch wood no accidents and amazement at dozens who commit suicide or destroy their cars by the thousand every day. A sort of real dodgem car circuit where too many dont dodge.

Go and spend some time driving in Spain, there seems to be no lane rules for round-a-bouts there. Once you realise there are no rules to follow you enter and exit with caution, no one gets frustrated and I have never seen an accident on a round-a-bout in the 2 years I was there. As I see it, if there are rules then some motorists will travel faster with the idea that they are in the right so everyone else should be too. In Spain caution wins lol.
