@@simoncoco1 , A pumi is very intelligent. They love there own voice, if you do not want a dog that barks a lot, you must train it early not to bark. Quick-thinking, learns both good and bad things just as quickly. Must be brushed every week and cut at least 3 times a year if you are not going to the show. A really fun breed. Not as much guard in pumin as in mudin. Love agilty and other fast sports

What I love about our 2 Whippets is they are happy with a 30 minute off lead walk, 1 hour off lead walk, 3 hour hike at the beach up all the sanddunes, i've never found them grumble at the distance, still zooming at the end of longer walks. The flipside on a shorter walk they are equally as happy and will go and crash out on the bed/sofa/rug etc 😄

This part of their behaviour (needing short, but intense moments of running and otherwise being okay with normal walks and otherwise snoozing the day away) was actually one of the reasons I choosed that breed. I read about this behaviour in some dogbreed-books, then informed myself on the internet if it´s really true and so many confirmed it that i just knew I found the right breed :)

Had a Whippet who would tell me when he had enough. Would take the ball, frisbee whatever we were playing with, run to the door and drop it. Time to go in! Unlike many other breeds that could go on and on his exercise sessions could last as long as 10 or 15 minutes to as little as 1 or 2 minutes. I miss that little guy. He was a trip.

This is absolutely the kind of dog I want next. I'm not quite there yet since I just lost my dog recently. He was a mixed breed between pug, beagle, and something else and he lived for 17 years. So, I had him for a good long time which was a blessing. I've been doing my research and when ready will get a Whippet or perhaps one from a rescue that might be a mix.

You have said it before, the beach is one of the best places for a great zoom/mad run away from sheep nesting birds etc. I cannot wait for Willow's vaccinations to kick in fully so we can take her to Silverdale/Southport/Crosby/ West Kirby etc. She is 12 weeks old on Thursday and we have a Whippet because you said years ago about them being able to walk up mountains, but also sleep all day by the fireside, also low shed and low odour. We had to be very patient as lockdown scuppered our plans for the longest time with no puppies available from the best breeders. Then what do you know, we both went down badly with Covid the very day we got her, which was on return from a big Northern Irish family get together, our 1st in 2 years. Still, our dreams have come true and we are so excited to have the most beautiful dog- beautiful inside and out. Thank you so, so much for all your excellent Whippety Tips and keep them coming. How to gradually up the pace of exercise from ickle pup in arms to grown mountain ranger/fireside lover doggy would be a marvellous video if you have the time please xx

I live on a farm so it is lucky enough to regularly enjoy off leash gallops with my Dalmatian & Border Collie but as they are endurance runners I have to be careful not to let him over do it.

My 2 whippets have rarely done more than 5k in 1 day - a short mad run around, couple of short walks and they are happy, my little female absolutely hates bad weather and both will walk around puddles, they won't go to bed without their fleece jumpers at night and are by far the best dogs I have ever seen with kids..zero aggression to anything or anyone (other than rabbits, birds & small furries) -- also, like you say, they are happy with short walks or 10k, as long as they are with you they don't complain - once you have them you won't get another breed - i also recommend getting 2 minimum, as they love to cuddle up to each other.

I have a retired greyhound, and the same is true of him. Half an hour walk, and he'll spend the next 5 or 6 hours asleep. 15 minutes of mad zooming around the back yard after his dinner, and that's it for the evening. We have a small 16ft caravan, and he goes everywhere with us, has his own bunk and we have a collapsible dog pen for outside so he doesn't need to be tied up. The whole sighthound family is very rewarding, make great pets, don't smell, shed much, rarely bark (with a few notable exceptions), and don't need huge amounts of exercise. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to people who live in flats, either, even the larger greyhounds. Our boy is large, at 36kg, but so long as he has a bed to accommodate his long bony legs, he's happy.

When I was choosing a breed I saw lots of...’whippets should be kept on a lead at all times as they will run away/after any wildlife or livestock’. Hmmm. I should have taught my whippets to read because they didn’t know that was a thing 🤓. Molly even walked up to an injured ‘pidgin ‘ one day. She sniffed and looked up at me with that... ‘Mum ...help the pidgin’ look on her face. Took me ages to find a willing bird sanctuary to take it in. 😶

I have a sweet standard poodle who could use a friend eventually, and I see the whippet breed as a great option now that I know about them. I have trained my poodle and plan to put in some time to train especially the first year. Would it work out to have a puppy whippet introduced to a ln energetic standard poodle? She’s sweet, a little in your face, but I think she would calm down. I have see elsewhere that whippets don’t do well with multi dog households, but it seems like that may be less true depending on training and temperament. How do those things affect the result? Thanks!

Hi Deborah well that’s not easy to say a lot depends on the individual dogs Like people each dog is unique The best think to do it test your dog with whippet and see how they get on and also see how they get on with a puppy in your home too if possible This will really help you understand your dog with another Hope that helps 🙏👍😍

My husband wants a whippet we have 6 kids from 5 to 17 all are chilled not crazy hyper loud kids at all we live in a nice village with plenty of open space have a big garden and my husband is home all day every day me n the kids r out during the week and then we are all in most weekends would anyone recommend a whippet for us? Are they very bark happy as we live in a nice quiet could de sac with all elderly folk and we wouldn't want a dark that's going to annoy them or wake up the kids all hours.
@onemanandhiswhippet Жыл бұрын
Hi there you sound just the family to have a whippet they are very easy to look after and don’t bark must too. They love to sleep and would love a run around your garden The only thing is recall when if their lead they are likely to chase small animals Recall can be trained but whippets are great on a lead too Do check out my other videos of when we got Rosie as a puppy 👍👍

Oh my goodness... people who get Spaniels..Just WHY? They just never stop. Worreting about, into everything, restless..just nope! A Whippet is happy with some reasonable walks/runs, and then dozes the rest of the day.

We adopted a 1 year old rescue whippet recently and he is a brilliant dog, however he constantly starts whining in the mornings .. like really early even though he is in our bedroom/it's warm and he doesn't need the toilet or anything (we let him out the first few days and he just keeps whining after). He gets a decent amount of exercise daily, mostly during the day and once we are up and move around the house, he actually goes back to his bed and chills/no whining. It seems he just wants us to get up... do you have any tips for us? How can we stop this behaviour?
@onemanandhiswhippet2 жыл бұрын
Lol 😂 oh no that’s not good the key is to be in control if you respect to him whining he will very soon know how to get you to respond The things to do are make sure he is covered in the crate, don’t let him out until it’s the right time for you, and when he whining Point at him look into he’s eyes and stay NO ! Keep to this and in a few days you will see he will change and understand the routine in a morning 👍 hope that helps 👍🙏😍
@akbender2 жыл бұрын
@@onemanandhiswhippet thanks a mil for the response! That does help a lot!! Randolph (that's his name) doesn't sleep in a crate - but now that you mention the cover... maybe he does need another layer? He just started whining next to me in his bed and once I put a blanket on him, he chilled... our other dog is a pug who is neeever cold (always roasting in his thick coat) so a dog getting cold is kind of a new experience for us that we need to look out for. in any case thanks for the fast response we really hope we can change this behaviour fast otherwise we will go up the walls haha

Where did people get the idea whippets need much excercise? They're such lazy dogs. Our whippet prefers to snuggle on the couch for most of the day. And so funny to see your whippet do the pirouette thing, ours does that too when she's excited :)

These dogs don't have a lot of body fat which means they burn themselves out really quickly a 10 minute dash does for them. Because of the lack of body fat they feel the cold so coats are necessary in winter. Please emphasise to your vet that they they don't metabolise (lack of body fat) anesthetic well so an experienced vet is essential for neutering. My whippet comes camping in the tent with me and is a quiet calm companion. Best retirement dog ever ❤️

The main difference between my Whippet and the ones here is that my can't be off his lead...he was a rescue and his recall is awful. He has gotten better in enclosed fields, but we simply cant afford to pay 10 pound an hour each day to let him run

If anyone thinks of getting a dog because ' it doesn't a lot of exercise ' They are deluded and will suppress the dogs happiness and fulfilment in life . My whippet is 10 and I walk him maybe 3 hrs per day. Plus car trips out to shops. Sure they love their duvets and warm cuddles by the fire but we need to either accept that our dogs deserve an active life , or take the decision to Not get a dog.

Exactly! I've had 3 Whippets and honestly I don't recommend them to everyone sure they're pretty to look at but they are in the sight hound group and need to be watched at all times as at any given moment they may chase something. I do take my dog to the beach and she's good off the leash but never do I think she's not going to chase something. They can be stubborn so obedience training will take a lot more dedicated time than say a dog in the working breed group this is why you don't see them much in obedience competitions there are several other breeds that are difficult too this is why nobody should ever get a breed just because they're cute or pretty everyone should be prepared to know the breed first. When they say a breed needs an experienced dog owner they should know what the means...not for everyone. Like I say I love my Whippet but I do know they have certain needs and restrictions.
