In the last few years, many of the world’s largest corporations, including Shell, have committed to net-zero emissions by 2050. At first glance these announcements seem like great news - evidence that large corporations are finally taking climate change seriously.
But dig into these companies' plans to get to zero emissions, and you’ll notice something alarming. Virtually all of them are planning to use huge amounts of carbon offsets to get there.

I have been working in the Carbon offsets market and this video provided me with a more clear understanding of the situation than many articles

One minor note: Carbon Capture and Storage at this point seems unlikely to be helpful at all in the near future.

You should add a short outro to the end of your video reminding people to like and subscribe. I had to pause your video at the last second to keep autoplay from switching the video before i had a chance to *like* it.

@flop snail I listen to several playlists. And as a truck driver, it just plays through most of the time so I don't have to mess with my phone. Thanks for the tip though man.

@@JustStopPlayingGames You can turn autoplay off and still have playlists work. Playlists continue to play automatically whether or not autoplay is on or off

Honestly, with renewable energy offsets, they should always be at the cutting edge of technology. “I paid for solar panels” isn’t significant when they cost 2 cents/kWh. “I chipped in on an ocean turbine, geothermal plant, etc.” would pass the additionality sniff test a lot better. The one exception I could see is *maybe* infrastructure. “My money helped buy the land to expedite the transmission lines to connect a remote wind farm to the grid by about a year” might be more significant.

It's insane just how much lying/exaggerating has been done, yet in a way such that it comes off as the truth to the average person who doesn't do much if any fact checking.

3:45, I think here they actually mean "Net-zero". So reducing nearly 90% emissions and only offseting the rest by 2050. Whereas carbon neutral can mean mostly relying on offsets. In recent years, the term Net-zero has become more standardized and science based with the rise of credible institutions like the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi).

Are you sure that the ''no one will miss you'' is real? It kinda looks off, and seems way out of line for it to be official

We don't need to do with CO2 anything. It would be reasonable to not pollute. CO2 is not pollution. It is hardly a greenhouse gas. Compared to real things.
