I absolutely loved these machines growing up in the 80’s and 90’s! The Big Red three wheelers are a beast and adding those huge tires make it a completely different platform for sure. It’s definitely a cool idea and I think that you can make it into a really good functioning machine with a few tweaks. Adding those huge tires probably added a lot of weight for that little engine to push along with you being a big guy on top of it. You will really benefit from doing a big bore upgrade to the engine to build enough power to actually move it around better and lowering the gear ratio would probably be a good idea too. This thing is awesome and I look forward to seeing it again soon with some better upgrades!

I think an addition of a canoe paddle might be in order. Would be hilarious to see someone take this down a (very calm) river on a float trip. On a calm river with rocky/pebbly banks I think this thing could get out just fine. I do think a long canoe paddle would be the preferable way to propel it in water though.

attach 3 "paddle" devices to the rim on each rear tire (not the tires, so it can still drive on land) and it should provide enough thrust to move around

They make trolling motors that bolt to the lower unit of your outboard motor. You could put two of them on to help control the direction you’re going and it would go pretty fast on the water. I’d love to see that addition!!!

Back in the 80's - mid 90's I had both a Big Red and 200S 3-Wheelers and both would float if I wasn't sitting on them. Helpful tip: Always keep the front tire aired-up tight for less rolling resistance. It helps tremendously traversing creeks and sand bars. I found that out after I kept getting stuck on the sand bars from pushing a soft front tire.

I had 1984 a workable soul outing to deep water crossing was to lay down with your belly on the seat. Use your legs as rudders. It's really wild in a current, though. 😅. It was always good to have your buddies that were unwilling to try it go around the easy way to help you get out. It can go sideways ( or upside-down) in a hurry.

We had a Honda 125 and a big red 200 growing up. They would both float with factory tires with just a little extra air in them. One summer the lake where we had a cabin on was very low so mikes of beach were exposed. For a month or so we put them thru a lot on the beach and in the water. Problem was the really fine sand got into the brakes and wheel bearings and trashed the bearings. After dad put all new bearings in both we couldn’t ride in the fine sand and water. I don’t see and of that fine sand there but the bearing will get water in them still reducing the life expectancy of the bearings. Just my two cents. But luckily I’ll bet your dad can put new bearings in. Lol

What tires are they 21x16.1 Turfs?? I use to run 18.4x16.1 Tobacco Harvester tires on my K5 with 2.5ton Rockwells. You can put on the 18.4x16.1 Tobacco Harvesters (tractor tread) on the back of the 3-wheeler and flip them backwards. It'll both propel you across the pond and keep you upright by not displacing the water as they spin. After playing in the pond you can easily just swap them back the right way for the mud/trails.

@KentuckyKustoms the safe way to test the tipping point would be to take out the motor and seal up anything that can't get wet and you try and tip it over with a couple guys to find out.

I would float my big reds all the time. You need stock tires with tread that's it. My 1988 four trax was the most fun floating in water. Great vidio

Build a bracket off the bottom of the axle. Replace rotor on pinion with sproket and chain drive with a propeller out the back.

At least Scott shouldn't be complaining about getting all hot and sweaty this way... but those tires definitely doesn't even look like they'd do much in mud, let alone water. He should've gotten ones with lugs or tractor like threads instead, the ones with the huge, deep ridges for when you wind into soft mud and still get something to grip the ground with.

Dad doesn't want to rescue Scott from the pond, but doesn't protest his going into the pond a second time. I was waiting for the rear wheels to grab onto something and flip it. Had that happen to me in a swamp on an old Honda 110, where I was basically throwing water until the rear tires grabbed a sunken log and next thing I knew I was in the water with an upside down ATV on top of me.

As a kid my friend and I put my dads big red in a pond. It had smaller tires and did not stay upright. It did however float. And my dad was not happy he had to go in the pond either.
