It isn't an acceptable form of communication to help the inmate succeed in reunification with their families. It's major exploitation and it's just another way for some of the more manipulative inmates to hone their machiavellian 'skills'. They should be using it for online classes to help them support themselves when they get out. DOC uses it as another way to monitor them and blackmail them. Oh-- and from what I hear, the tablets are crap. Cheap ass POS.

I've also heard they leave $5 of whatever was sent. Either way I'm not paying his court costs. My brother is currently incarcerated in Alabama prison system. I know the exact cost of everything lol. 6.99 for a movie that you get for 24 hours. 1.99 for one song or one game that you get to keep as long as you pay 2.99 a month. If you can’t pay the monthly fee your tablet gets erased. The phone calls aren’t too expensive, 1.50 for 15min and 50cent per email.

I just got released last month from an Ohio prison. The GTL tablets and prices aren't too bad here we considered ourselves lucky. Phone calls are 2 cents a minute and they give us 3 free 30 min calls every week since COVID happened and emails are 10 cents each. Streaming music unlimited is $13 a month and we could get Pluto TV for $12.50 a month. We got our tablets free.

Awesome video Joe, I know not every video you’re going to be able to make can be on such a crazy banger of a topic like this Prison/Telecommunication scam. That being said though I really like the investigative journalism angle for prison related topics. I believe you could really make some great content surrounding the inner workings of prisons and through research and possibly first hand interviews with recently freed inmates, you could potentially create some really compelling content that also sheds a light on the prison system and the potential reform it needs. Long time fan Joe, been watching you for at least the last 5-6 years following everything After Prison and Joe Does Stuff and no matter what content you decide to pursue I’m here for it brother. Keep it up!

Back when I was rasin Hell & goin to jail, phone cut off at 10 minutes so a $10 phone card would get me 1 & bout a half a call. I dont see a problem with astronomical costs for prisoners to get "luxury" items. Its called lock up because U MADE THE BIG BOY (GIRL) DECISION TO VIOLATE THE LAW, F'D UP, GOT CAUGHT, & SINCE ITS CALLED LOCK UP/JAIL/PRISON, NOT 3 HOTS & A COT MOTEL, U SHOULD PAY CONSIDERABLE MORE THAN MYSELF FROM WALMART. My issue lies w/ jail for the unconvicted. You may be unable to make bond & stuck in there, but you ARE INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY & NOT BE SUBJECTED TO THE SAME PENALTIES AS THOSE CONVICTED! If I buy a flick from the $5 bin, u gotta pay $10; SO WHAT? DONT MAKE CHOICES THAT LAND U IN JAIL! I do not support the exploitation of anyone over anything, nor do I have much sympathy for luxuries when uve been locked away from society validly. Sorry, not to piss in ur wheaties. I love ur show. Keep that head up Joe. It'll work out in the long run for ya.
