Weight is more important than height. If you're both 200lbs but one guy is 6'0 the other guy is 5'6 it doesn't matter that much, esspecially if the short guy can box really well in the pocket and hits hard

Height correlates with reach most of the time though. Unless the shorter fighter has decent reach he’s always at a disadvantage in the striking realm.

It's not adding pounds that changes it, it's not having to cut huge amounts of weight. It's similar to Alex at 185, dude was a glass cannon, moving up allows you to still be fast and powerful, but without being so chinny

Being taller doesn’t make someone heavier, especially when some these smaller guys are fully framed out and probably cut just as much weight as the taller ones. A 6‘3 155er like Turner can only ever bulk up so much. Your skeleton is already big (fixed weight, can’t ever subtract or add to it, unless you get surgery, but replacements usually weigh more than bone, which means you‘d have to cut more weight to make up for it), you have more surface area, and your organs are bigger, all of which adds extra weight. A 5‘7 LW will naturally, at the same BMI, weigh significantly less. But in order to catch up in weight, they have the option to add and stockpile on actually useful mass, fat and muscles. Success also doesn’t hinge on being taller or shorter, it’s how you implement your advantages to outweigh your disadvantages. Short stocky guys can be card to take down, because they’re very compact, and in turn have a very hard to manipulate center of gravity. Think of 2 wooden blocks, both weighing 500lbs. One is (length, width, height) 5ftx5ftx5ft, the other is 2ftx2ftx11ft, now which one these two would be easier to manipulate and fully knock over at least once? Not hard once you visualize it. There‘s also a difference in what’s effective for you when striking. Stocky guys usually look to get inside, then sling short hooks to the head and body, that is if their reach corresponds to their height, like, Volkanovski actually has a huge reach for his size. But usually, shorter arms mean more powerful hooks on the inside, they’re harder to tie up, as they have more mass and generate more power than longer skinnier arms, and don’t need a whole lot of space to fully execute a power punch. Your arms are shorter and therefore have less air resistance when thrown, meaning you’ll get in full shoulder rotations much much quicker and more powerful than with long arms. Your straight punches aren’t as powerful however, as those rely less on rotation, and more on the momentum they gain by being thrown from a distance, which is where longer arms shine. Longer arms mean you just aren’t effective on the inside, you usually don’t have enough space to flare your elbows out far enough to get any real power into your shots. Perfect example is Adesanya. You ever see his counter hook he throws? The one he knocked out Pereira/Whittaker with and got caught trying to sling it at Strickland? Its a HUGE motion, which he almost has to wind up from really far away to get power into it, simply because his arms are too long to throw any meaningful punches up close. That’s why he usually fights on the outside, using his reach, which every long fighter should. It’s not like longer fighters can’t throw any hooks, it’s just that they need distance to generate power. Think of a door slamming shut with force. If you hold your finger in its path, right by the very beginning next to the hinges, nothing will happen to your finger, the same can’t be said however if you hold your finger in the doors path on the very far side, where it is actually able to generate momentum. TL;DR: Short fighters try to get inside, long fighters try to keep them away and to punish them trying to get inside.

Thing is with short fighters is that it must be easier to cut weight if they're muscular since muscle holds alot of water, while skinnier fighters must either not cut as much weight or just suffer more during the weight cut to try and keep up with these heavier shorter fighters.

Weight cutting is very detrimental to training progression. If they let fighters fight at whatever weight, they were most comfortable at, not only would you see much better skill from both fighters, but you’d see much more intense and entertaining fights. All the “statistics” are there for sports betting purposes, to try to make the playing field as level as possible for their odds
