Please note, for anyone who is installing solar panels onto a corrugated roof with fiber/composite. Please make sure there are safety nets underneath the whole surface area. In the last 12 months we had 3 installers fall through the roof and will never be able to walk again. Safety nets where not covered in this video, so if you know any installers please let them know for the risks of this roof type. Stay safe!

Thanks to this video I know why you basically only see battery’s in domestic solar installations. I don’t think I’ve heard that explanation anywhere else.👍
@jimmyhackers8980
@jimmyhackers8980 Жыл бұрын
becuase your average person is stupid (no offense, but an easy sale) the inefficiency of charging the battery up and then discharging it wastes about %5-10 of the energy you could of been paid for putting back into the grid... batteries are a gimmick for the average consumer, the only reason you would use one is if you dont have a flat rate for your electricity.....or you'd want to go "off grid" i would imagine the government schemes that push them are more so as a grid redundancy......pushing the ownus of energy production costs into the hands of the consumer.....while bolstering their own failing grid systems.
@TheFoxUK
@TheFoxUK Жыл бұрын
@@jimmyhackers8980 I’ve been looking at solar for years but cannot really afford it. So far I’ve worked out If you have enough room for 8+ panels you can alway export more than you use (like Toms doing), and you hope than what you use at night cost wise is covered by what you export during the day cost wise, then you don’t need batteries as you quite rightly said. The catch comes when some energy firms pay a low rate for what you export that you then may want hold some of it back for yourself.
@onlineo2263
@onlineo2263 Жыл бұрын
@@TheFoxUK there are no domestic tarrifs that come close to paying export at a similar rate as you pay for import. Octopus Flux has a day rate import of 33p, and export price of 23p... But has very high rates between 4-6pm so you would not want to be on that tarrif if you need any electricity during those hours! This tarrif is also exclusively for people who have solar and battery storage. Aside from this tarrif most other domestic tarrifs pay 5p or under for export, whilst charging the price cap (about 34p) for import.
@Psi-Storm
@Psi-Storm Жыл бұрын
He also has a tariff with lower fees at night. Installation costs for battery storage is around 20 cent/kwh used, so if you only pay 24 cent at night, the battery just breaks even before it dies in 10-15 years.
@jimmyhackers8980
@jimmyhackers8980 Жыл бұрын
@@Psi-Storm having built ebike batterys, and fixed many more "Lithiums" including many aftermarket golf trolley batteries. in my experience, the main component to fail first is the battery management system and moreso its ability to balance correctly, and your luck then depends on how many of the cells its has taken with it and if they are recoverable safely (usually a 50 50 between some cells gone and no cells gone). ignoring lithiums claimed cycle life of somewhere between 1000-2000-3000 cycles to 90 - 80 -70% capacity. i can imagine many of these very large battery systems may be sold to not so savy members of the public. who would be charge for an entire battery replcement when they loose one cell or just the battery management system circutry. not to mention how dangerous it is when these things do catch fire...through internal fault or external.

Andy is brilliant. Exceptionally easy to understand and that's obviously because he knows his stuff inside and out. It is only people that really know their area of expertise that can explain things in an easy manner. I also really like the fact that he didn't try to push batteries to make more cash and instead explains why 'it is not really relevant'. This is the kind of person everyone wants to work with. Hopefully, Andrew Wareing will have watched this video and tie up with Andy on different projects. Seems to me that one business would benefit the other, not to mention their customers too!

My mom told me this when I was just a little kid. "If you can't explain something for everyone to understand, you don't really understand it yourself". And that's so true in today's society, there's so many people simply regurgitating "the talking points" without actually really understanding what they're saying, no matter if they also have "an explanation" preprogrammed ready to repeat.

Tom you can have a wind turbine, but not one of the big ones. You can get one of those new 3D spinning turbines that look like a lamppost with a bees nest on the top, they generate about 500w each which will complement your solar setup nicely during the winter months and at nighttime. They're also dirt cheap these days, like 200 quid each including the post.

Well done Tom. I added solar and batteries along with heat pump hot water to our small horse property down in Victoria, Australia last year and we are seeing the benifits big time. $700-800 quaterly bills down to an average of $100( less than $50 in summer) Our usage charges are also going through the roof so it will only help more in years to come. And the best thing mate, we are using that Sun to generate power for our own consumption. How good does that feel. Love all your videos, keep up the good work. I imagine it adds a lot or workload but know we all appreciate watching them. I did enjoy this one being and Electrician. Its interesting to see how sparkies do things in other parts of the world. UK is similar to Australia by the looks of things.

How many pence per kWh for electrical energy in your part of the world? I think I heard somehwere in the video its in the 30p($0.56 AUD) range? Far out thats through the roof. We pay 25-30 cents per kwh here atm. I use the grids in offpeak times to charge batteries at 18.5 cents if the solar hasnt charged them by 1.30pm. Peak is from 3pm until 9pm. Costs 32 cents per kWh then.

Nice, remember you can still store power even is you haven't got a battery system by turning up the walk in freezers, fridges, hot water heaters etc. during peak production hours in order to save sunshine in the freezer so to speak. It can even be automated depending on the time and season so in summer the freezer will go well below your normal temperature and the colder freezer will store power so it takes longer before the compressor kicks in. Milk storage can do the same, as can your hot water heater for the parlor. Some even make a cold storage from old tank in the ground using DC power directly from some panels.

Andy was really good with his explanation. Very clear and very knowledgeable. He does need his own channel. Until age 24, I was a farmer then left and went to work in an office and now work in energy policy especially electricity. Despite that, I don't actually know very much about the physics of electricity. I just work out the economics of building power stations, solar farms and wind farms at grid scale size. It was really interesting to hear about it from the prosumer (i.e consumer who also produces electricity end of the system). The really interesting part of the video was that your system would blow up the local transformer if unconstrained. That point is not understood by Government Ministers. The entire national distribution and transmission system will have to be massively upgraded in order to take the massive amount of renewable energy being planned and all the electric vehicles. Thank you for a great and informative video all round.

My house is remote and off-grid, and many years ago we put in a wind turbine, which now provides almost all the electricity we need. It was expensive to buy and install but I've never regretted it. I love knowing that the stormy weather we get here brings power to my house. Over the years I've learned to use power-hungry things (washing machine, tumble dryer, hoover etc) when the wind is blowing harder, and it's second nature to me now. I know your power use is very different to mine, and that you'll find your own path along this route, but I also know you're going to love having these PV panels.
