@@Lilly-qt4yy I mean, I read the manga so I already knew what to expect, it was pretty obvious there, but I did see a lot of reactors get confused and think he was like in shock because of how great it was (watched way too many reactions of this, tbh). He did enjoy it, as in the experience wasn't unpleasant to him. It's just that it didn't live to his expectations of being the best thing that can happen. Unlike Makima, he has no romantic feelings for Power so it gave him minimal pleasure. I also think he just likes it when women are more forward and dominant (totally not projection from Fujimoto) because when Makima grabs his hand and puts it on her chest, he goes absolutely insane.

One thing that has always bugged me is how anime tends to lack the ability to portray any sort of subtext. They always have to explain everything out loud. But the visuals in this one actually pulled it off. I think the highly cinematic take on visuals and voice acting are doing it for me.

This is why I have a love/hate relationship with anime, even with my some of my favs such as jojo, and why I lost interest in bnha. Everything explained in words squeezed in to stretch out stories and it feels almost like being in kindergarten again, having your hand held every episode at the cost of a decently adapted animation.

I enjoy when adaptations don’t copy scene for scene, especially like that bathroom scene. Some good troupes in manga break my immersion in anime, like when the background just changes into a random color to emphasize a comedic moment for example. Especially when the anime style is usually very detailed and not slice-of-life.

eh, it doesn't really bother me that much in Anime, maybe I've gotten used to it. But that said, I really like the Chainsaw Man adaptation and I feel like the 'naturalistic' style will help a lot of people in the west get into it more, since it's more like a western-style movie or 'prestige TV' show. I remember maybe a few years trying to watch Bakemonogatari and the quick edits seemed really confusing - but then recently after watching a lot more anime, it was fine. Part of it is just getting used to that kind of thing.

Spot-on in highlighting the stylistic difference. It has it's own pros and cons but it's still executed very well. Imo I think it's fine that people didn't immediately pick up on Denji's emptiness upon reaching his first goal because it was still seeded in the first place and is soon to be hammered home in the story. I think people who didn't will get there eventually as the story goes on, manga readers just have a bounty of hindsight.
@Erick-tv8oq
@Erick-tv8oq Жыл бұрын
I mean, he explains it word for word to Makima. The important part is the conversation, not the immediate perception of emptiness. The dialogue with Makima allows us to find out that Denji is much more thoughtful than he looks, and raises a legitimate question: to someone who never got anything out of life, every little thing could be a dream or a goal, but then what after?
@komos3719
@komos3719 Жыл бұрын
@@Erick-tv8oq yeah but what I'm discussing is what anime-watchers took from the scene because that was brought up in the video - how the different presentation of the scene made the conclusion viewers came to less concise although it was still laid out for them. I agree that it's actually quite blatant but at this point people are still taking Makima at her word and, from what I've seen, appear to buy into the idea that Denji's ultimate goal *is* sexual conquest rather than a mutual and unconditional connection with others. Which is interesting.
@Erick-tv8oq
@Erick-tv8oq Жыл бұрын
@@komos3719 I think the anime is conveying Denji’s character pretty well. Episode 1 establishes that Denji sets goals for himself, so he can live striving to do something, but since he didn’t have anything, everything can be a goal. You could say that from episode 1 to episode 2, Denji’s “goal” was eating bread with peanut butter and jam, for example. The scene of him putting every single condiment on slice of bread, eating it and saying it is delicious, is already pretty telling of how his mind works. Denji’s world is incredibly smalll, but it’s constantly expanding, and his ultimate goal might be that of a genuine connection with people, but he doesn’t know that yet. At this point in the story it’s okay for people to think he wants sexual conquest, they aren’t fully immersed into the deeper themes of the narrative yet
@komos3719
@komos3719 Жыл бұрын
@@Erick-tv8oq no, I'm not saying it isn't. I even agree with you completely on your last sentence. There's just a tonal difference which changes how the audience at large understands Denji. I'm not saying it's here or there, it just is.

There are some people that say that the adaptation style is off or whatever but honestly I actually really appreciate it for being its own thing. I also feel like the English dub is reinjecting a lot of humor that is getting a bit lost in the subtitles I think. Although Meowy jumping from across the hallway as Power exits, the bathroom is incredibly fucking funny and I'm surprised that wasn't mentioned at all in the video.

I don't have a problem with changes that have to be made for something to be properly adapted from one medium to another. Not at all. But when the director starts talking about how he wanted to make it his version (as something was wrong with the original) then that's when i have a problem with it. An adaptation should be something that tries his best to adapt the source material not something to be changed just because the director likes it better this way and an adaptation should never be "it's own thing" or we end up with stuff like the Witcher series or the Promised Neverland s2 where instead of changing the only thing wrong with the manga they went and made their own thing and made it much much much worse. I guess, at the end of the day it's the intention of the changes that matters, how many changes are and if those changes actually make things better or not. That being said I love this adaptation but I can understand why the japanese fans are angry at the director taking into consideration what he said in interviews.
@beastiebro

@@ssilentmedia I get that what you purport as the meaning of “adaptation” is a popular conception… But that’s not what an adaptation is. I’m not arguing about the Witcher but just pointing out that you aren’t putting forth the denotation of the word.

@@ssilentmedia an adaptation is the transfer of a work or story, in whole or in part, from one medium to another wherein the director is allowed to take creative liberties. @ssilentmedia
@ssilentmedia Жыл бұрын
@@beastiebro so the first part is like my definition of adaptation. the only difference is where you added that the director cand modify it and that's where i disagree. an adaptation should always attempt to adapt the source material as true as possible while doing the necessary changes to make it work for the new medium. be it cutting out some stuff because of time limitations, relaying an information in a different way if needed (mangas usually have a lot of inner dialogue but that doesn't always works on tv), reframing certain scenes (because the manga panels are designed with a book format in mind while shows and movie scenes are designed with the screen and moving pictures in mind), changes some exaggerated faces because the new medium allows for more ways of conveying a message etc the point is that it should try to be as close as possible to the source material. be it from a technical point of view or from a spirit point of view. if not, and the director has full control over what changes he can make and only makes them because he thinks his interpretation of the source material is superior to the original then what's the point in calling it an adaptation. it's just inspired by because at the end of the day we also have to take into consideration why people want certain stuff to be adapted into anime format. because they want to see their favorite manga and story in a moving format.

12:30 This Even the manga never changed the art style just for a joke and kept everything consistent. From your comment at 3:33 it seems like you (and many others) think this is referring to the 9/11 world trade center attack, but it's not. The story is set in 1997 so it couldn't have been that and the "live" isn't really something that need "correction" either. It's just the unfortunate choice that referring to a terrorist attack with a burning high rise will generally make people think of 9/11 first and foremost.
@atlasiscooler4694
@atlasiscooler4694 Жыл бұрын
The parallel between the attack and real life 9/11 is still probably intentional though even if it’s not historically identical, this is an alternate universe not only with devils but with other things such as the Soviet Union being still in existence in this universe despite disbanding in 1991 in real life. Sure Fujimoto COULD HAVE thought of a high-rise that looks suspiciously like the 50% of the then-existing World Trade Center in an area that looks like NYC getting attacked by terrorists with smoke coming from the exact same spot… by coincidence (or just not double-checked when things took place before putting historical inaccuracies in the story) but considering Fujimoto is a massive fan of American movies he probably has some knowledge of the existence of 9/11 or at least enough to not do that completely unintentionally.

I was always sort of afraid of this, part of what makes Chainsaw man so good is the manga format. Creative uses of panelling, borders, expressions, and backgrounds, all come together to make the series what it is. You don't get that in anime. I think fujimoto excels at that format, and his stories fit manga really well. As the CSM anime has been going forward, I'm seeing that they don't fit anime very well. At least not the Mappa kind of anime. I also don't really like the choice of progression per episode. Its really annoying to end the episode just before the actual end of whats going on. The power thing in this episode was annoying, like why split a pretty short bit between episodes.
