A coast redwood was found in 2014 with enough points to almost tie General Sherman on the national registry if it were also nominated. It has a few more points left to gain, but will need a climbing team. The trunk is wider than General Sherman. Search redwoods + year of discovery

Points has nothing to do with volume. Points is girth in inches at 4.5 feet plus height in feet plus 1/4 the crown in feet. Volume is how big the actual tree is. General Sherman is 58,000 cubic feet and there are a dozen Big Trees over 40,000 but there is no coast redwood over 30,000. No way any coast redwood compares to Sherman in volume.

This tree is in Sequoia National Park in Central California, east of Visalia. The giant Sequoias only grow along the western slope of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Check out the video of the General Grant tree, also in Kings Canyon National Park. It is the second largest tree in the world. There are taller trees in California, just barely, but none as big in volume as the General Sherman. If you get a chance to see these trees, make a trip north (100 miles) to Yosemite National Park.

Steve Sillett, a forestry professor at Humboldt State University, recently climbed Hyperion and measured it at 379.1 feet, one foot taller than previously thought. Hyperion, which grows in Redwood National Park, edged aside the previous record holder, a 370.5-foot redwood called Stratosphere Giant in nearby Humboldt State Park.

Possibly the largest living thing in the Universe. Definately on Earth. I've been to General Sherman, It is truly like walking with earthly god's. All should take a trip to Sequoia N.P. Its worth it.

This tree has approx.119 log truck loads of logs calculated at 5,280 board feet per load - enough wood to lay a 1"x12" board 119 miles, or 630,000 board feet of lumber (average Ponderosa Pine tree - 24" dia. has about 500 board feet) so this tree equals in volumne about 1200 average pine trees. Value of 630,000 bd ft of lumber if you take a value of $5.oo per board foot would be $ 3,150,000.oo True Value of this tree is priceless !!!

I think its older than 2200 years- several years ago I found an old wood trunk ,here in California ,made out of Redwood one board is about 1048 years old , I counted the rings with a magnifying glass ,and a point of a needle !! This board is about 23" across - so how old was the tree it was cut out of ??

I believe it is more than 2200 years old, you would have to take a wood sample ( a pencil like core that is bored out )exactly thru the heart and if it was taken 3' above surface ,the tree could have been supressed when it was a sapling-I have seen 1' diameter saplings that were 100 years old.Unless you hit exact center at a few inches above the surface of where it sprouted,you would loose a lot of accuracy. -

the dyerville giant is the tallest and most volumous tree ever.They never took the true measurements when it was at it`s largest.Although there are some people of knowledge who knew of perhaps even larger trees in it`s era and area!Come hiking with me some time, you will be amazed...Big Jim

@freakusa752 Sequoia National Park has been extensively documented. Del Norte county not so. I think it was the tallest tree in the world the hyperion tree in Del Norte was discovered in 1998 that's just a few seconds ago in the grand scheme of things. The conditions are right these tree's are much older and less touched by man kinds foot prints. These are were the true old growth timbers lay!!

I think there are bigger trees than that one. Some African baobab trees have bigger circumference (also fig trees in Borneo and elsewhere) and the world's tallest tree is located in the Muir forest in northern California.

@graciemaemarie11 This tree is Beautiful and Majestic,but it is not immortal and if you notice my final assessment of this tree was PRICELESS ,that means beyond the price of money,etc. My calculations are only to give you an idea of its unbelievable immenseness.I have seen this tree in person and love it . As for immortality and eternity we people have available an opportunity that trees do not-but not enough space for a dissertation on that.
