We took one of those home from Morocco when I was 6 years old in early 70’s. They were still very rare in Morocco back then, we don’t know how she got there or where her tribe was, but she was starved and would not have lived long. She was about 1 year old according to our Vet, and by the time she died she was an ancient 25 years old. She never lost her instincts and sometimes would be gone for weeks, but always came back to our family. She was a simply amazing companion to our family for many many years.

@Lanii G I think the key is to not force a cat like that to become what you want it to be, but gently nudge it and provide a save place with consistency and privacy. We have a Bengal and a Serval. I noticed that no matter how “loving” and cuddly you are, they have their own mind and you can’t manipulate or control them with love. You can however make them highly interested in you and coming back for more by way of playing with them and keeping them entertained, interested and steady consistency is the most important of all. Just my two cents…

Fun fact: Sand cats have dense hair and pads on the soles of each foot that protect against the intense heat and cold of their habitat, as well as aiding in movement across the sand. The pads help them navigate across shifting sands. Sand cats are fearless snake hunters, their prey can include venomous vipers and other snakes.

I was working and living on an oil lease in lea county new mexic for about 3 years. I got glimpses of several of these cats during that time. Views so brief that I thought they were cougars because they had a long tail but I had nothing to judge their overall size. Finally one day three of them walked across the road 20 yards in front of me and i was able to find pictures of them on the internet and was able to learn what they were. My boss had lived in the area 60 years and had never seen one or knew they existed. The town of Jal, NM has a high school whos mascot is a wildcat and i was maybe 30 miles from Jal. Getting to see them is one of the most memorable experiences of my life.

@@amberlytownsend2856 it won’t take thousand years, experiments have been done on foxes to make them domestic in around 40 generations, there are also observations on ‘metro dogs’ which went from domesticated to wild in 40-60 generations. Though this selective breeding comes with side effects too. Like wild foxes got soft skin when domesticated , and domesticated dogs started getting wolf like features when becoming wild. Same thing might happen when domesticating the cats, they will get domesticated in 40-60 gens, but wouldn’t look like they are looking right now. (Also the ethics point of view like you said)

A predatory animal, but it is gentle with humans. I met it in northern Saudi Arabia. Its relationship with humans is something incredible. It does not like to approach them, but it knows that they do not want to harm it. Its appearance is strange. When you meet it, it freezes in its place and looks at you with kindness. Then, when it finds a suitable opportunity, it runs away.

@@JEMurl Egypt relied on seasonal Nile flooding to produce most of it's food, that food then had to be stored for the rest of the year. Storing massive amounts of food attracts massive amounts of vermin. Cats were instrumental in keeping those food stocks safe, it's no accident that Egyptians worshipped the animals that kept them from starving similar to how they worshipped the Nile, which fertilised their fields in the first place.

My mum's cat does the same. He refuses to drink water, regardless of if it's in a bowl or running water. The vet says he's not dehydrated though, and it's normal for some domestic cats to get all their moisture from food. We make sure to keep him on a mixed diet of grain-free dry food for his teeth and meat with jelly for his hydration. In return he demands butt scratches and keeps the rat population from the nearby railway line at bay.

@Grande Leonardo If you're serious: There is literally a picture of a sand cat in the Cincinatti zoo, Bristol zoo and unnamed captive location on the wikipedia page of sand cats, with a dedicated section about them being in captivity since the 60s... Also if you look at 0:53, the background is clearly painted and the lighting is off for many of the shots - as there's not nearly enough bounce-lights for real sunlight. (The sun is bright AF)

a lot of these kittens grow up fast in size in nature... i noticed this living with a. family of domestic cats on a jungle island beach. they were still pretty small at two months but suddenly grew so fast and at six months, they looked almost adult. they ate a lot of fish and we're extremely active, climbed trees, rocks, played in the low tide lands as the sea was very shallow at low tide

The secret really comes down to super efficient kidneys. Even domestic cats have really supercharged kidneys (and sadly the reason older cats often get kidney problems because they're so overengineered). Though with domestic cats, easy access to safe water means they don't really need full reliance on getting water from their prey. Generally kidneys work by first excreting a lot of fluid and then running it through a water recovery system that reabsorbs only the water back into the blood and with sand cats, that water recovery system before the urine is passed to the bladder is supercharged.

I worked at a small zoo and we had a sand cat! He was super soft and gentle (when he wanted to be! hated men! He was neutered and the last person he saw before anesthesia was the owner, who is a man) He had a wicked bite if you riled him to much and sharp claws (I still have my scars lol). The room was usually empty and I always let him out to play with him, he loved walking in my legs and jumping on my shoulders. Miss that cat, he went to a sister zoo before I quit (Had family troubles)

My cousin used to work at a zoo and one of the Puma's there loved him! Every time he came in, she would run over and jump up to give him a hug and a love nibble on the chin while purring. She would bight just gently enough to do no harm but firmly enough it would hurt if he tried to jerk away. My cousin always complained he was afraid his brains were going to be scrambled cause her teeth on his chin really amplified the vibrations. xD
