We took one of those home from Morocco when I was 6 years old in early 70’s. They were still very rare in Morocco back then, we don’t know how she got there or where her tribe was, but she was starved and would not have lived long. She was about 1 year old according to our Vet, and by the time she died she was an ancient 25 years old. She never lost her instincts and sometimes would be gone for weeks, but always came back to our family. She was a simply amazing companion to our family for many many years.

@Lanii G I think the key is to not force a cat like that to become what you want it to be, but gently nudge it and provide a save place with consistency and privacy. We have a Bengal and a Serval. I noticed that no matter how “loving” and cuddly you are, they have their own mind and you can’t manipulate or control them with love. You can however make them highly interested in you and coming back for more by way of playing with them and keeping them entertained, interested and steady consistency is the most important of all. Just my two cents…

I was working and living on an oil lease in lea county new mexic for about 3 years. I got glimpses of several of these cats during that time. Views so brief that I thought they were cougars because they had a long tail but I had nothing to judge their overall size. Finally one day three of them walked across the road 20 yards in front of me and i was able to find pictures of them on the internet and was able to learn what they were. My boss had lived in the area 60 years and had never seen one or knew they existed. The town of Jal, NM has a high school whos mascot is a wildcat and i was maybe 30 miles from Jal. Getting to see them is one of the most memorable experiences of my life.

@@A-Goose- You can’t domesticate them. It would take thousands of years. They will always be wild cats at heart. Also, unless the sand cat was born in captivity, taking an animal from its natural habitat and forcing it to live in an enclosed space is just plain wrong.
@rahulray54114 жыл бұрын
@@amberlytownsend2856 it won’t take thousand years, experiments have been done on foxes to make them domestic in around 40 generations, there are also observations on ‘metro dogs’ which went from domesticated to wild in 40-60 generations. Though this selective breeding comes with side effects too. Like wild foxes got soft skin when domesticated , and domesticated dogs started getting wolf like features when becoming wild. Same thing might happen when domesticating the cats, they will get domesticated in 40-60 gens, but wouldn’t look like they are looking right now. (Also the ethics point of view like you said)

As true wild cats, they are not adapted for living alongside humans. @demetrialowther7272 жыл бұрын
The secret really comes down to super efficient kidneys. Even domestic cats have really supercharged kidneys (and sadly the reason older cats often get kidney problems because they're so overengineered). Though with domestic cats, easy access to safe water means they don't really need full reliance on getting water from their prey. Generally kidneys work by first excreting a lot of fluid and then running it through a water recovery system that reabsorbs only the water back into the blood and with sand cats, that water recovery system before the urine is passed to the bladder is supercharged.
