Your instruction is just perfect. I've heard the comparison of the consistency levels, but you took it further by detailing how each consistency should be used in a painting. Thank you for sharing this info. I look forward to viewing your other instructions!

This was about the best explanation I have heard. I was in a class and the instructor kept using the tea, milk & cream description without explaining how to get them. Not helpful at all. I think most people drawn to art are visual not conceptual. So show me! Thank you!

This is great. What lovely way of expressing 4 levels. Tea, milk, cream and butter. Quite often the 4th is challenging and tends to be missed.

Thank you! I love your explanation followed by an excellent demo. I had to take a Sum-e class to learn this properly bc no watercolor teacher had done this. We were painting on RICE PAPER, so no leeway for error. I finally got control of my watercolor paint after that. Color mixing became the next hurdle. I was a good draftsman bc I loved drawing with pencil, charcoal, and conte. I stopped here out of curiosity and found a gem. I have subscribed bc I love the paintings you do and the way you teach. 🙏☮️❤️🖖

Even though I have a grasp of the concept of value, I never quite have had a handle on how to sort things out in such a methodical way. I was a student of the classical approach and learned a lot about oil and pastel while reproducing the masters. But I didn't study watercolor, even though I was selling my watercolors before going to school. This was the late 70's before you were born. Anyway, I can't wait to practice your method...it's brilliant! Thank you!!! Your work is beautiful ❤

Thank you Matthew! Good tutorial! I’m not a brand new beginner but not very experienced either. My time can be consumed by other things. I know that practice is also a key. Where I get into trouble is really understanding how wet the paper is and therefore when to use each paint consistency (First time I’ve heard “butter” used and that’s great!) Living in dry Colorado it can be challenging. I’m hoping that your checklist will also help me recognize how to put it all together. (Improper or lack of planning is my worst mistake, I know!) I can try harder!! Thank you for your encouragement! Donna

What no one seems to mention is that these consistencies are mixed with fresh tube paint. There’s a lot of paint on that pallet that will be hard as a rock in a few days

Thank you for this easy to remember concept! My problem is going in too dark too fast, or not waiting for the right stage in drying to introduce more paint. Do your online painting workshops do critiques?
@learntopaintwatercolor11 ай бұрын
Yes! I do offer critiques. You can learn more about with I offer at www.learntopaintwatercolor.com

Hi Matthew. Where I run into problems is wet into wet. Trying to gage how much water is already on the paper to my mix my skies are either to light or lately I noticed I’m going to dark trying to compensate for the drying. Such a struggle.
