I don't understand why people aren't paying serious attention to their spending right now. I might have no income again if we go back into lockdown (well, when we do, really). I'm stocking up on some things that will keep, but not going crazy about it. Although (LOL) I have so many red lentils and so much brown basmati rice that I could eat curried lentils with rice for months if I had to! But what you touch on here is really that there is a need for us all - regardless of whether we want to be frugal or have to be frugal - to be *mindful* about our consumption. I think overconsumption is a vice and moderation is a virtue (sadly, one which I aspire to much more than I achieve it, but we all need targets, right?). Here in the UK, my trusted news source tells me that we became much more conscious of food waste during lockdown and that can only be a good thing, as far as I am concerned, regardless of your income/budget or your financial goals. I love simple food, and I am grateful for it. My body is grateful not to be eating rubbish anything like as often as it used to, as well!

Oh, I should say that when I had a lot of money (there was a time when I did - and I thought it would continue forever, unfortunately, but I have learned that lesson now), I was guilty of buying new cars. I had to drive a long commute on motorways every day for work, and I felt it was a good investment since I drove home late at night and was anxious about breaking down on the motorways. Now I would buy a car that's about a year old, maybe two, and keep it for another two or three years before trading it in for another car that's about a year old. There was a great feeling the first time I drove off the car forecourt in my brand new car, even though it lost so much value right away. But the feeling - although it *was* great - was not as great as it would have been to have had that money in my savings account, earning me interest! I've learned my lessons, better late than never. :-)

I’m 26 years old and live in northern CA. I am very blessed because without my parents help I would still be living at home with them. The cost of living is crazy! I know many other “adult children” still living at home. Also just costs for insurance, food, etc. all adds up and when you are just getting out of college you usually don’t make near enough to pay for everything on your own.

I'm 25 yo and I would be considered a young adult, at least in my country. I don't buy excessive anything as I live with my girlfriend and we try to be as frugal as we can, so I never ask gifts from my mom. Problem is my mom keeps buying me stuff I never asked for and don't need or want, I really don't know how to tell her that I appreciate her thought but I'm better without new clothes and pointless bath products. It seems such a waste of money to me and I'd really be happier if she kept her money for more important stuff, especially in this time of uncertainty.

@sjordan7085

Actually, one could add to that, buy everything you can used and still look for the best prices. Use, reuse, repair and recycle, never buy new unless there is no other option! Even Factory Refurbished is better than buying new, because almost always you are getting brand new regardless, often the item has just been repackaged. Buying factory refurbished computers means they still come with warranties and you can buy high end, and still save hundreds of dollars.

@@bruce5895 Being frugal comes as second nature to me, my mother and father thrived through WWI and WWII in the UK. I am very grateful for all they taught me, they did many things people don't even think about today. I should probably write my own book! My mother was a school teacher and had won a scholarship to Oxford but couldn't go, because she had to support her mother and siblings after her father died at a young age. There was no welfare of NHS in those days. She supported all of them. When she married my father all they had between them to start their married life was a wooden orange box for a table, my sister was put into a draw, resting on two chairs to sleep as they did not have a crib. They grew most of our food, made, repaired or reused almost everything. They did electrical, woodworking, gardening, brick laying, cement work, sewing, car repairs, uphostery and more, it was just how they lived. My mother cooked everything from scratch and all our food was Organic. I learned how to knit by the time I was five. My father was self-educated and even today, I am amazed by how extensive his knowledge was. My mother was a Botanist and knew all the Latin names for plants. She taught me which herbs and oils to use for health reasons. I learned to study and love nature. We often went on long walks into the English countryside, or rode our bikes to pick blackberries, for homemade pies. Now in my early seventies, it is difficult to imagine how they managed to die wealthy, but it was just from living simply and using common sense. Nothing was ever wasted. The manure from my bunny went to feed the garden. I still have rescued rabbits, and always wanted a lop rabbit. Tomorrow, I am driving to collect a young bonded pair of lops, someone can nolonger keep. They are already spayed and neutered, and were due to be euthanized. I will be very happy to give them a kind and responsible home. I write books about my rabbits for my little grand-daughter. Eventually, I will illustrate them and be able to publish. Instead of going on vacations, I look forward to a monthly Day Out with my daughter and grand-daughter. I generally spend about $20.00 or less and take a picnic for us to have by the ocean, or in a park where there are light houses, and wild life. So, much cheaper than staying in hotels and flying far away, and just as enjoyable. I also have an electric bike, which is great exercise according to several university studies, and saves on the cost of petrol as well as being a great deal of fun. I bought one that folds up and already had sixteen miles on it, so the company let me buy it for $400.00 less than normal. Still an investment, but well worth it, because it pays for itself! And, you can buy insurance for them, incase they get stolen or crash, not too expensive, just a few dollars a month.

I think you need to consider all sides of the argument and then make an informed decision. It's also about priorities. A new car in midrange brings a peace of mind if safety was your main consideration in buying it. A huge house could be an investment if the real estate market goes up compared to stocks. Also we work from home now so more or versatile space is needed. The location might be important. In a safe neighborhood. The gym is a means for your health if you use it wisely. We have to evaluate everything in terms of quality of life and frugality. Every one is different and their financial goals should not be a blind alter on which we sacrifice penny pinching saving instead of smart frugel choices. But yes many times your advice is right and I appreciate the effort and the knowledge. We are all in these struggles together. Making hard choices. Every thing has an upside and downside. Use your power in your life wisely.

Well joke was on me and 6 years, multiple failed adoptions, I'm just now bringing my daughter home. For my next car I was planning on buying used but I don't know how to best do that. I feel like as a single female, salesmen are pushy and not fully honestly. My previous used cars didn't last very long and cost a lot in maintenance. I developed my car buying strategy in my early 20’s after getting hosed on 3 used car buys in a row. I always purchase the lowest cost brand new car that I can find and drive it until it dies. I’m 66 now, and this plan has worked out well for me. My current car is a 13 yr old Toyota Scion. I know its history and there have been no surprises. This car owes me nothing. There is an initial 4 or 5 year monthly car payment, but after that you can apply those monthly payments to savings or whatever you choose. By the way, I think you DO need a spider swing. I bet you could find a used one by and by (what is a spider swing anyway? 😂)

Eye opening article from Wall Street Journal ....Interesting about helping out adult children because I have done that with auto insurance and college tuition. Thanks for sharing, Dana! 💯

On this list houses is the only 2 things that makes sense to me right now are houses and adult children. With breakups and divorces at a high, it makes sense that people are looking for places to live. One of my friends moved in with her boyfriend early this year. She sold her house and move into his. After quarantine they have now broken up and she is looking for a house. For adult children, I don’t think it is gifts but actually paying their bills or providing shelter to them (because of unemployment.).

Hey Dana! Late to the game. I’m from Philly and I miss a WaWa! Bought a new car August since my 14 year old car served its purpose and died. I keep my car until it rots lol. Been blessed to be busy and working a lot at the hospital since this pandemic.

Not all people are staying home. My job remained the same. I don’t have school age children. We are not all in the same boat. Different strokes for different folks.

Spider swings are awesome! We got our daughter one a couple of Christmases ago for $35. She is on that swing every day. It's on our patio. 🥰

It's a large round or rectangular horizontal deck swing with cord net (like a cargo net) stretched across it. I knew about that swing style but hadn't heard it called a spider swing before this video. I assume it got that nickname bc the cord net looks like a spider web.

Spider swing was a good investment for us. Gets the kids outside, and adults can use it too. Can’t be too frugal, got to live alittle.

Great points. I have to stay away from amazon, etc right now. My 34 year old daughter had my first grandbaby in July and plans on having no more and my 36 year old son is having his first and only baby in January. I want to buy my grandbabies everything...lol. I did tell myself NO more...for now.😄
