Once in a great while many talents come together in a person - Mitchell in her prime not only played and sang effortlessly, she was a genius with words. It's hard to say what appeals the most - her melodies are haunting but the words....ah....they cut to the heart of being human and with such imaginative flight: "I saw an aging cripple selling Superman balloons". She could put the most profound messages to music and make it all come out seamlessly, beautifully, touchingly with meaning for all.

Joni Mitchell is one of the best female guitarist I ever heard,Black crow from Heija is simply amazing.Also her voice since Ladies of the canyon and the under rated for the roses with her back ground voices were ground breaking to say the least.I put Joni on the same level as I feel for Kate Bush ,these two in my mind are the best original artists of this century.

***** When you do, teach me, because I find it impossible to learn to play her songs. She wrote only two songs in standard tuning. She has 60 different ways she tunes her guitars. Great guitarists are often hard to emulate. Of course, I'd rather have her songs to listen to than the ability to play them.

I really love Joni. Her voice, lyrics, compositions ... everything about her. She is so real. And it's not that I want to discourage, come down on or diss modern young "artists", but I think that some of them might take a moment to take their heads out of their asses and look at what they are doing and the crap they are producing. I'm just saying that they could be a little more mindful of the messages and ideals they convey and the way they do it. I was going to mention names... but decided no.

..Plus the fact that as we ladies age, our voices deepen somewhat & gradually it becomes more & more difficult to hit those high notes that we could reach when we were 18. Then we turn 50 or 60 & there's our voices way down in the basement --- or as in a case like mine, looking for a bucket just to carry a tune. Joni will always be Joni no matter how much her voice mellows over time & the traits that make her 'Joni' will always be recognizable to those of us who love her music.

Coming from a time when you had to work at your craft, work at developing a following, take the smallest of opportunities and make it work. That is why Joni Mitchell , Lightfoot, Young, the Guess Who, Heart, etc. will last; because there is something valid in them as artists. They played the clubs and student union buildings- they weren't manufactured or hyped into existence like Bieber, One Direction, et al. It was fun watching the talent that played the outposts when they started, and remained

And according to today's standards, Taylor Swift is talented. Joni Mitchell is one of the most talented guitarists and songwriters out there, with more to say that whine about her ex boyfriends. I salute you, Joni! 🙌

Case in point: Blue is a breakup album, but it is SO different from what you'd hear from Swift. It isn't a complain-fest: there is all sorts of textures and perspectives about heartbreak with fingers pointed everywhere. It isn't marketable edge, it's pure heartbreak.

There’s always been pop singers / ‘commercial’ artists. Lulu or Nancy Sinatra are better examples from those days. Joni was never in that category .
@Ryan_hey5 жыл бұрын
@@gostrum1 Agreed, you said it. Joni was never a pop artist. She's far more esoteric, so to speak. She really delves in deep into her soul with albums like "Blue", whereas pop artists are more likely to have lyrical content that easily resonates with a majority of the population instead of the insightful depth of artists like Joni. Both styles serve different purposes.

Genius isn't subject to the rules that restrict us mere mortals (I've been playing, and gigging, since 1965). Joni learned open G, and then just started making up her own tunings. How? Beat me, sire.
